It was announced this morning that the Pacific Coast Football League is now a thing. This league is for players who have graduated from high school, but have not met the 3 year post high school requirement to be eligible for the draft.

"The four-team league, based in Southern California, says it will pay players an average salary of $50,000 and play eight games "under professional football rules, protocols and style," according to a statement sent out by the league." Each team will have 50 players on it, and they'll be coached by professional and college ranked people.

They'll be recruiting kids in winter 2017 in order to start playing full-time in the summer 2018.

Much more at the link here.

I love this idea, as it gives players an opportunity to make a very good living compared to the traditional scholarship offered at universities.

I've got to imagine though, once a kid accepts $50,000 from the San Diego Snakes, they would lose their NCAA eligibility, no?

Yes, but if you can do that for 2 years, and get better at football....might be worth it. That said, they won't get food/training/etc. that they would in college...not year round.

I'll be intrigued to see if top college football players elect to go this route. $50k a year is YUGE money for a 19-21 year old person.

Yeah, probably even better than what Alabama plays their players :).

I do like this idea. I don't like the NCAA and how much cash they make, but I also don't like the push that players should have to get paid, playing in college has always been an optional endeavor. This seems like a pretty good alternate option. If you can play, the NFL will see you, go here if you want to make money and not go to class.

I wonder how long until the NCAA does something underhanded to try to cripple this thing?

Came here to see this. Leaving satisfied. :)

I also am dubious of the NCAA ... that said, I'm not sure this new league has the players' best interests at heart, either. It almost encourages them to abandon their education or at least prioritize it much lower. <shrug> Whatever, might be interesting to see how it develops.

As far as education, they'd most likely be on their own going to community college, or just enrolling at a university as a student only.

This league will probably work out okay for the college players who don't care to attend class, and are majoring in parks and recreation or underwater basket weaving.

You are probably right. Those who are interested in a particular education or already prioritize that higher, will likely take the college route anyway. Don't know. But then, I'm not really into football so I don't really care.

Interesting idea if it can catch on.  Not sure what to think to think there. I'm guessing the salaries are a bit too low to make it work.  That's roughly 2.5M in salary commitments per team. If that gets any kind of traction, those salaries will be way too low. They'd be wise to simply set the salaries as a percentage of league revenue like the NFL does. That would do more to attract top college talent I would think.

Those have long been arguments made by those that think the NCAA should pay their players anyway.

This sounds like the immorality of the NCAA but with a paycheck instead of a diploma.
