Seattle's back-up catcher job maybe opening up

I wonder what the rules negotiated by the union actually are.  I think, without a union, he's probably fired in the real working world.

And justifiably so.  Social media, like all speech, has consequences too.  I don't know how we've gotten to a point where we think we are allowed to have rights without ramifications or limitations.

Those tweets are incredibly common though. Jesus, are you on facebook? That is like half of America. An opportunity was there to talk about the ignorance behind it instead of fleeing from it.

People get fired for saying stuff like that on facebook all the time, as well.  Seattle was absolutely correct to suspend him.  The union might contest it - the John Rocker suspension is probably what they'd look at.

Geez, that was like 16-17 years ago, shortly before 9/11. I remember him railing on different races, but what I remember the most is Rocker calling people Queer. It pretty much ended his career, although he had a good amount to do with that with his performance.

Our society is diseased. He is an example and not of the worst case as sad as I a am to say it.

What we are seeing in today's society is due to a lack of a unified, outside "villain". It might not seen so, but as we stand now as a country, we have never been safer form a foreign invasion. The world, as a whole, is closer to global peace then it has ever been. We have alway had some other country to be afraid of and that has actually kept us closer together. Now, with fear ingrained into us, we only really have to look at each other to get fear. That is why we seem divided in the country today, though I am not sure we are as divided as some people like to think. I think its the 10% loudest on each side with 80% in the middle more or less indifferent.

Wait, I thought this was a Twins site....

When Rocker made those statements, however, he was considered an elite reliever. It was after that event that his career went down hill.

I applaud the Mariners for doing the right thing, of course The player in question was absolute dog poop on the ball diamond anyways so it makes it easier.

Comparing it to Peterson isn't relevant IMO since I still maintain the Vikes should have cut/traded him after all that garbage. Wilf of course has no morals to speak of anyways though. I'd like to think that several teams would have sent AP packing after that garbage.

Like I said, good on the Mariners, comparing African Americans to animals is disgusting and has no place in this day and age (or really any time period)

Here is the other thing:

What is more of a danger to society:

A. Having a racist bigot open his mouth on social media

B. Having a drunk drive, get arrested for DUI and going to jail

The drunk criminal still has a job...

Doesn't work. If you were drunk while driving a company car or while on the clock for work, then you'd be fired. In your social media accounts, you indicate your employer, and therefore, your employer is being represented by the behavior you exhibit on social media. If I curse on social media, I don't lose my job or face any retribution, but if I get a speeding ticket in a company car, it's strike one in a three-strike policy in the agency I work in.

A lot of people consider racism - and tacit acceptance of it - to be a larger danger to our country and less forgivable as a "mistake." It's actually pretty easy to see how millions of people have been harmed by it in history and are still today.

Also, as opposed to drinking, there's more plan-like behavior involved in racism than there is in drinking too much, although someone who drinks when he should know better also gets public scorn, like Johnny Manziel.

Actually, the one that surprises me is how it seems that people are less forgiving of missing a field goal than of beating a kid, which was supposedly consigned to history by Richard Pryor almost 40 years ago, in his Live in Concert movie in 1979.

Social media behavior can absolutely be a reason for termination or discipline.  I'm not sure your analogy really worked here.

And drunk driving can be a fireable offense for many jobs as well if driving is a requirement for your job.  I don't necessarily disagree that the penalties for that behavior need to be higher, but I'm not sure bringing it into this conversation has any benefit.

The point being that being goofy on social media being akin to driving offenses in my personal vehicle. However there are lines that you cross on social media that will definitely lead to firing, just like in most cases personal driving stuff won't get you fired, but doing that same action while representing the company would..

Absolutely, I agree with you (and my second paragraph made this painfully unclear on a re-read) and i don't know why these two issues are being compared.

Yeah it's a pretty dumb comparison and I am not sure the point? I mean yeah I'm all for tougher DUI laws, but I don't see what that has to do with the Mariners suspending this jackass.
