NoCryingInBaseball Verified Member Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 Went to the game last night…enough said. Hoping to see a better game today! Here are some things to think about:It’s the policy of these game threads (and a policy I agree) to stay on the positive side, with that in mind, it’s important to note that Sano had a sweet RBI double and made a great diving catch in in the 7th inning last night! Not much I can really comment about the routine fly ball that fell between Santana and Arcia in the 9th.Through Friday's game against Cleveland, Mauer is batting .313 with a .451 on-base percentage and a .438 slugging percentage. That batting average puts Mauer at 13th in the American League among qualified hitters, and his .451 OBP places him atop the AL leaderboard. Mauer continues his consecutive game streak of reaching base…he has reached base in every game this year and the streak also carries over from last year. Maybe Mauer isn’t the same player as his MVP season, but he has certainly proven to be a bright spot in the batting lineup this year and maybe he can….I don’t know…wake this team up from the long winter’s sleep? If I might continue a little with RiverBrian’s youth movement theme in yesterday’s Game Thread….Malone is now in the bullpen, which leaves Berrios, Duffey and Meyer in the starting rotation, at least until one of Santana and Gibson (or both) return from the DL. I’d like to chalk Berrios’s outing on Thursday as debut nervousness, and I really want say the same about Meyer’s appearance in the 8th & 9th in the same category. I’m enjoying getting the young arms their opportunity and hopefully one or two might stay with the big league club this time. Most of the Detroit starting rotation has been rather pedestrian so far this season. Verlander, Sanchez and Green (placed on the DL on Wednesday) have ERA’s of 5.46, 6.08 and 6.28 respectively. The only bright spot on the Tiger rotation has been veteran right-hander Jordan Zimmermann who was acquired through free agency over the winter for a 5-year, $110 million deal. The 29-year old Zimmerman was the ace of the Washington Nationals last year is a two-time All-Star who threw a no-hitter on the final day of the 2014 season against the Miami Marlins and currently has a 0.35 ERA. Zimmermann is sitting at the top of all MLB pitchers in ERA at this point in the season… Yes folks, that’s who the Twins will face today.I included a photo in this post (if I’ve done it correctly) of a first pitch before a local game. Actually, it was the Mayor of Minneapolis on April 27, 1948. It has nothing to do with this thread, it’s just that I recently came across this photo and I thought it was cool. mickeymental Verified Member Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 hmm. barehanded plays at third, diving catches in the outfield, origins at shortstop: maybe sano should be the super-utility guy?
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 hmm. barehanded plays at third, diving catches in the outfield, origins at shortstop: maybe sano should be the super-utility guy?His favorite position when he was younger was catcher...
diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted April 30, 2016 Posted April 30, 2016 I have to think Berrios will have the longer leash of Duffey/Meyer/Berrios simply b/c he was an early add to the 40 man and they won't plan on using an option unless he really blows it. I suspect Duffey and Meyer will head back to AAA unless they absolutely force something when Santana/Gibson return.
