Sano switches agencies

With Jay-Z's agency now.

Good for Miguel, they have a real nice roster from all the sports over there now.

Yeah, when this news came out this morning, it was very interesting...

Having chatted with his now-former agent Rob Plummer, I'm surprised, but it'll likely be good for Sano.

How does this work? Will Plummer still "make" a little bit of money from Sanos future deals?

I wonder if Sano is looking for a big payday now, if so, I hope the twins can lock him up long term prior to the season starting. (Thinking 2-3 years of free agency outta do it)

Dodged a bullet. If he had gone to Boras we'd be SOL on an extension.

GOD THIS FRONT OFFICE IS TERRIBLE!!!!11!!!1111

Why? Because they haven't locked up a very promising young player with only about a half season of experience who doesn't need to be locked up yet to remain under team control at least through this coming season (and maybe 2 seasons)? If free agency were imminent, that would be a completely different matter, but that's obviously not the case here.

While I don't necessarily disagree with the assessment, I'm having a difficult time using this point as an example of why that may well be true.

Agree with the Boras statement.   Although certainly not required yet, locking Sano up sooner rather than later would seem to be a prudent move by the Twins organization on several different fronts.

Might need to adjust your snarkometer.

It would be in the Twins best interest to lock him much like the Marlins just did with Dee Gordon, like the Rays did with Evan Longoria, the Royals with Sal Perez.... It's just getting Sano and his agency to go along with it and that it's in his best interest even though it's likely not financially speaking.  A 5 year deal that gives him a little more in the first two years than the league minimum and little less in his three arbitration years.

If you were Sano would you rather bet on yourself yearly with arbitration bumps or take that guaranteed money not matter what happens?  My guess is Sano bets on himself.

If he just wanted the fat contract, I think he'd have switched to Boras. I don't think that's what this move was about. Jay Z presents a whole lot of marketing opportunities, not to mention anyone who thinks they have some musical talent would go that way too, that a lot of other agencies cannot provide.  I am guessing Jay Z isn't in the agency business to start playing hardball with the major sports owners.

I am glad.   Rob called me when Miguel lived here and told me he was only allowed to eat baked chicken breast and broccoli.   Miguel does not like broccoli and he likes other food better than baked chicken breasts.

The only thing Miguel could say in English when he got to Elizabethton was   "Will I get enough to eat here?"   That was not a problem.

He also got Kennys to translate.  One of things he wanted to know was if I was to old to take care of him.

Speaking of Kennys.  He was named the MVP for the 2015-2016 Puerto Rican League today!

Why the rush to lock him up when you have control for another 6 years through 2021? There's no harm in waiting to see how he pans out at least until his arbitration years.

wrong and wrong

Boras almost always takes his guy to free agency. Also, that is exactly what Jay Z has done, if he wasn't playing hardball he wouldn't have a roster of CC Sabathia, Cano and Durant under his agency. Agencies play "hard ball" with major league owners, that is literally their biggest and most important job by far.

While interesting, this won't be all that important until Sano is through his arbitration years. Hopefully we can lock him up before free agency, but they are obviously eyeing HUGE money down the line. They won't want to sign for less money now when they know he'll be in line for nine digits after a couple more seasons of production.

Don't know who that last guy is, but Sabathia and Cano are not exactly at the peak of their value/career and even have the ability to "play hardball" right now methinks.

So that 10 year deal that Jay Z got Cano wasn't playing hardball? Cano will never need another contract the rest of his life because they were able to get the absolute max for him.

The other guy is Kevin Durant, who is about to get a max contract, Dez Bryant is another guy they just played "hardball" for and got him a huge deal as well. Suh also got a massive deal by leaving the Lions for the Dolphins. The idea that Boras is the only agent who will play "hardball" is just a silly notion in general.

He is also about to get Cespedes paid max dollars as well.

He switched sports there. Durant = Kevin Durant

Is he a basketball or a hockey player? (both sports that have totally different compensation rules and team spending ceilings and floors.)   I follow neither

Totally irrelevant to baseball compensation

Not at all a slight to you, but I am very surprised that I have found someone who is unaware of who Kevin Durant is. I'm constantly surrounded by people whose lives are all sports sports sports, though.

He is an NBA player who will assuredly make the max amount of money that he can. The previous poster included him because it is another scenario where Roc Nation will do everything it can to get the max amount of money available to Durant at the time of his free agency (which will be this summer). Definitely not relevant from a baseball compensation standpoint, but it is an example of Roc Nation exploiting as much as possible to get as much as possible for their clients.

Indeed, Durant isn't sticking around with OKC, he is going to fully maximize his value on all fronts.

Additionally as mentioned Suh is a good example as well, Roc Nation found him the absolute max amount of money (and Suh himself said repeatedly that he was going to goto the highest bidder)

As far as a baseball example: Cespedes is a client of Roc Nation, and he also is holding out for the highest bidder.

Make no mistake, this isn't just some hobby for Jay Z who is an extremely accomplished and savvy businessman. He is trying to build Roc Nation into one of the premiere agencies in sports.
