AlwaysinModeration Verified Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Meyer has pitched 3+ innings in three of his past four appearances. Granted yesterday (4.1IP) was an extra inning game...but is he going to be back starting soon, and if so...where?
nytwinsfan Provisional Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Good point. I would assume at Rochester.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 I would assume he'd take a Rochester rotation spot but in reality, I haven't paid enough attention to the Red Wings' rotation to know if there's space for him to start for the team.

Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Yep, I would agree with nytwinsfan if Meyer's starting, it will be for Rochester next year. The Twins are already locked into Santana, Nolasco, Hughes, Gibson, and potentially May for next year. I would argue that Berrios and Duffey jumped ahead of him in line for next prospect called up when someone gets hurt. Personally I would can the starter idea and make him strictly a bullpen guy. Could be a serviceable 8th inning guy or closer of the future.
Rosterman Verified Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Right now, they want to see how he does the second time thru an order.

Nine different guys have started games this year with over a quarter of the season left to be played. Add in the fact that 3 of the guys you named have ERAs over 5.5 and the fact that we might want to try to deal for catching & shortstop help you get a far more fluid situtation than you are envisioning.
HitInAPinch Verified Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 If there is a plan to make [ finish? ] the conversion of Meyer back to a starter, I suspect that it might happen after a few MiLB pitchers are promoted in September.
Buford_T_Justice Provisional Member Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 Maybe they want to leave him in that role and move him up in September. Meyer could be a better option than J.R. Graham to be the first guy out of the pen if it's still early in the game. That's not a shot against Graham, either, because he's capable of some good work. Not to say Meyer will take the same career path as Johan Santana, but he might keep us in a game or two while we're still in the hunt.

Locked in, meaning they are all under contract for 2016 and beyond. If there's a way to get rid of 2 out of these 3 (Santana, Nolasco, Hughes) I will be ecstatic. But I have a feeling since they're all making good money, the FO will put them back in the rotation and pretend this season never happened in the case of Nolasco and Santana.

I suspect Meyer is promoted in September ahead of basically anyone in AAA other than perhaps Tonkin.
AlwaysinModeration Verified Member Posted August 17, 2015 Author Posted August 17, 2015 A year ago TD was aghast that Meyer was never called up for a start. Can a prospect's star dim that much in a year? We also know that it frequently takes a while for pitchers to put it together. But from the sounds of it, Meyer is essentially written out of plans for the future in terms of starting. I personally hope to see him doing well in the Twins rotation. Maybe not in September, maybe not in April, but in 2016, and certainly by 2017.

But unless he finds another secondary pitch and control in his pitches, he might be one of those prospects that never figures it out...
