It's an amazing holiday today. Just simply amazing. I think there might be cake and balloons at work today, followed by drinks and revelry afterwards.

That is correct, because it's National Barbershop Quartet Day! Unfortunately the popularity of these groups are dying off...

Today is also National Pet Day! Feel free to post pics of your pet on the thread today!

It's also National 8 Track Day! Unfortunately I wasn't alive in the 8 Track hey day, but for others, what was your favorite 8 track you played in the car?

A good barbershop quartet is quite the entertainment.

I had 8-track when I was going to college. I think I've already mentioned the musical version of War of the Worlds; I had a lot of Rick Wakeman too, much, but not all, of which I've found ways to recover.

Pets? I feel like I'm the pet.

I get it now. The barbershop quartets competition.

Today we "celebrate" national equal pay day. Sigh, the situation is not getting much better........but I like this threat to be lighter, so I'll leave it at that.

We do CELEBRATE national grilled cheese day. I love grilled cheese. It is one of the reasons the indoor grill exists!

seriously, an indoor grill is awesome, Raichlen's indoor grilling cookbook is a must have.

What's the fanciest grilled cheese you've ever made/ate? Normally I like to include some turkey or corned beef in there to make a reuben or rachel... but sometimes the classic grilled cheese with tomato basil soup really hits the spot.

I've made grilled gjetost cheese and apple sandwiches before. Pretty nice.

Today is National Make Lunch Count Day! A day where you're supposed to get out of the office and go out for lunch with your co-workers. So do that today!

Today is also National Peach Cobbler Day! That's what I'm talking about.. One of my favorite summer desserts... My grandmother when she was alive was an amazing cook. She would make the best peach cobbler and lemon meringue pie as desserts.

Today is also National Thomas Jefferson Day! He deserves better than to be the face of the nickel... Has anyone ever been to the Thomas Jefferson Library?

Today is also National Scrabble Day! I love scrabble! I can't say I play the real game much anymore, but I do play Words with Friends and the app games a lot.

It might be getting better:

http://money.cnn.com/2016/04/12/pf/gender-pay-gap/index.html?iid=EL

Recent college grads are finding that young women are actually making more than men. The article mentions that this is largely due to young women asking for more at the onset.

I would also guess that companies are fairly self-aware, and plenty of them aren't proud of past job gaps and are or will actively try to fix the situation. I would think fixing the job gap at the entry level is going to be how most companies will remedy this situation. Not that it wouldn't be fair, but it probably would be pretty difficult financially to start giving 5 figure raises to all the established employees.

I've read conflicting stuff, nick, but like I said, I try to keep this thread lite!

I just don't eat desserts as much, and when I do, I don't like them as much. So, I used to eat peach cobbler, but I have no idea when I last did. I do tend to like the desserts with fruit much better than sugar based ones......

Given that I am moving out of state, lots of people are trying to have lunch or a drink with me over the next few weeks......but none today! But I am having dinner with a former co-worker, I'm going to count that one.

and, TJ is one of the best of the founders, if not the best. Stupid slavery makes it hard to call him anywhere near perfect though.....

I saw a recipe the other day for peach cobbler French toast! I saved it because my dad LOVES French toast ... so might try it some day.

If you ever make it one day let me know how it tastes! That sounds like the best of both worlds... Breakfast AND Dessert!

Better yet ... I'll give you the recipe and you can try it! I won't try it until I visit my parents again. At 90 I don't think my Dad needs to follow Mike's diet. ;)

Here's the recipe:

http://www.thereciperebel.com/overnight-peach-cobbler-french-toast-casserole/

But in Minnesota you'd have to rename that to 'Overnight Peach Cobbler French Toast Hot Dish.' And I'm not sure why anyone would use canned peaches! I guess if it were in the middle of winter and fresh weren't available ... but then I just wouldn't make this.

Thanks for the recipe ChiTown! I may be giving this a go on Sunday. I'll give an update if I end up making it... Who says TD isn't worthwhile? I have a margarita recipe, now Peach Cobbler French Toast!

Today is National Pecan Day! We've hashed out the nuts conversation quite a bit, and I believe we all agree that pistachios are the king of nuts.... It's been a while since I had a slice of Pecan Pie though.

Today is also National Reach as High as You Can Day! No matter how old you may be, never stop reaching to achieve your dreams! Whether it's professional or personal dreams you're going for, you can do it!

Today is also National Dolphin Day! Dolphins are amazing creatures... Animals with acute eyesight that can see in and out of water. You may also recognize Dolphins as a really bad football team in Miami!

Finally, today is National Ex Spouse Day! This national holiday should not be a real thing.

Pecan Pie is very good, although I'm not sure it's the pecans that make it so. I'm thinking you could pretty much chuck just about anything with large amounts of brown sugar, syrup and vanilla and have it come out tasting pretty damn good.

I always wanted to reach high enough to dunk a basketball, but alas I'm only 6'2 and white.... and way too old now. Time to set my sights on something else.

Dolphins are truly amazing creatures, not the football team.

We may need to create an additional International Holiday for you North... International Beer League Championship Day! Congrats! Are you a 6'2" standout defenseman on the team? Or the forward that can dangle around anyone a la Patty Kane?

Posted

It's been a few days since the last beer day, there must be one coming up soon.......

Pecans.....not my favorite nut at all.

given we are moving, and have not sold our house, I'd say we are actively in the Reach as High as You Can process.

Followed by International Hangover Day the next morning. The only way to remain relevant at my age is to attach the label of "standout defenseman" to yourself, I think you lose a couple of dangles every year after the age of forty, or maybe that's balance, dunno.

You and I would have gotten along great on the ice. I was the 5'11" butterfly goalie in my High School / very brief juniors career.. 2 significant hip surgeries later and now I've hung up the pads for good.

So that's what happened to my dangles.

What's a dangle, anyhow?

Well, we don't all agree that pistachios are king. They're okay and far from least favorite nut ... that honor goes to hazelnuts, or maybe walnuts. But pecans ... now ... those are royal. How do you pronounce 'pecan?' Do you say ... peh-CAHN, peh-CAN, PEH-can, PEE-can ... so many possibilities.

Reaching high ... I have my dream job. My career is as high as it goes. There are huge sacrifices I had to make along the way to get here ... like living/working in Canada for 2 1/2 yrs. But I honestly feel like I'm on a mountain top; and as much as the view is just awesome, I know that I am that lucky to be here.

Dolphins ... if I were on my home computer I'd post some photos.

Ex-spouse. Don't have one of those. Being married was something I never wanted, so I've been saved that hassle. But I do have quite a few never-married-em exes. And there are reasons they are ex. Good reasons.

Well it was quite a burden on us as well I'll have you know. Sheesh!
