Today is also National School Librarian Day! Remember to read books, kiddos!

Today is also National Hug a Newsperson Day! It's too bad Patrick Reusse isn't a newsperson, he could use a hug after his column about Sano...

Today's National Days are YUGE...

Today is National Deep Dish Pizza Day! Personally I prefer thin crust, but every once in a while, deep dish really hits the spot. The best deep dish in Austin is Via 313 Pizza. It's a sourdough deep dish crust, and first top it with cheese. That cheese is baked on there, and then finished off with the sauce and the rest of the toppings on top. Pretty, pretty, pretty good.

Today is also National Caramel Day! I love caramel! Best recipes using caramel, go.

Today is also Sexual Assault Awareness Month Day of Action. How about we make this topic a year-round awareness topic? Good? Good.

Today is also National Read a Road Map Day! What year is this? When was the last time you bought a map and used it on a road trip? Google Maps has been my best friend for years...

1. Pizza, any pizza, meh, whatever. I prefer it without red sauce and spicy, greasy meats and have been told that I'm not eating pizza then.

2. My best recipe with caramel in it? It's my caramel recipe. Yes, I make caramels, at the holidays, and wrap them in red, silver and gold foil wraps. It's actually pretty easy to make them.

3. Yes.

4. I love road maps. Google has road maps, too; they just aren't on paper, in an atlas. But I still carry an atlas in my car. Why? Well, what if you are out in the country somewhere and need to figure out where you are and how to get somewhere else and you don't have a phone signal? I usually figure out my routes ahead of time, then look at them on a big road atlas, because, well, visualizing where I'm going and how I get there, in a bigger picture sort of way, helps me get there without any miscues. It's also quicker. And tells you where all the rest stops are.

I love pizza, it is one of the few unhealthy foods we have not given up. My wife makes 2 different awesome deep dish pizzas, but those we have mostly given up, alas.

I think I've made my feelings on pizza pretty clear. Any kind, any time, any where.

Big caramel fan, I used to love getting those little Kraft caramels at Halloween, my sister had braces so I'd get hers too. I also much prefer hot caramel sundaes to hot fudge.

There was recently a very high profile sexual assault case up here involving a well known public figure. It was national news pretty much everyday for a month, do awareness is very high at the moment, I hope that continues and victims are less afraid of the shame of coming forward.

Maps? GPS anyone? C'mon!

We follow up National Caramel Day with....

National Caramel Popcorn Day! I love caramel popcorn, but it's a disaster when it gets stuck in your teeth...

Today is also National Student-Athlete Day! After the NCAA goes well out of their way to claim the players are "Student-Athletes" I'm tired of the term.

Today is also National Sorry Charlie Day... A holiday to encourage you to remember about the times you've been rejected. In my profession I get rejected every single day of the work week. I've learned to take it very well. Still can't say the same about the love life.

Today is also National Walking Day! A lifetime activity I'd say... Get your steps in today!

Oh wow! I still have some caramel crisp popcorn from Garrett's left over from Monday. It's not as good when it's not fresh and warm, but it's still really good. Yay! I will partake for breakfast! (Oh, and me saying I ate it all before the game started yesterday was just schtick to emphasize it was too long of a wait for the game to start.)

It's here! It's finally here!

National Beer Day! I will certainly be celebrating tonight after work.

Ironically on National Beer Day we also have National Alcohol Screening Day... That's something you can hold off until after happy hour, right? :)

Today is also National Coffee Cake Day! I love coffee cake. Cinnamon, sugar, and spice makes everything nice.

Finally, today is National No Housework Day! So forget about washing those dishes, folding laundry, vacuuming.... Gross. Go do something fun instead!

"Spice" lol. Translation- brown sugar and salt, for any non-native Minnesotans (who aren't already familiar with coffee cake)

It's snowing here this morning. This will not put a damper on beer enjoyment later in the day.

Not much of a coffee cake eater; prefer Danish.

Snow in April... Ish. At least it's going to melt right away!

This is one of those things that either ick or ish applies.

OMG, I almost forgot! National beer day, and I'm in Portland.......tomorrow could be rough. Well, not really, we hit two breweries yesterday, I'd guess we only hit one today.......

I love coffee cake, a well done one is awesome. But, I don't eat them much anymore, since I don't need the calories....

Hope you're enjoying some snow on the ground in the motherland this morning...

Today is National Zoo Lovers Day! When was the last time you went to the zoo? They have a rather large Zoo in San Antonio that I went to one weekend.. A lot of exotic animals I haven't seen before.

Today is also National Empanada Day! Can't say I have empanadas a lot, but whenever I do they're pretty tasty!

Today is also National All is Ours Day! It's a day to recognize how wonderful nature is. So Mike, go on a hike and enjoy the Portland landscape!

To get you prepared for the weekend....

Saturday is National Cherish an Antique Day! So let's all try to be nice to Chief...

Sunday is National Siblings Day! So call your sibling - maybe plan something with them.

I hate Zoo's in general, if the animals are injured or for some reason can't be returned to the wild, fine. If not, set them free, they're not here for my amusement and there are plenty of other ways I can learn about them.

In a better world, I agree......but most people in the world don't travel, don't really see animals in their habitats, and don't watch tv shows about them. I think they do serve a valuable purpose, to the animal population as a whole, if not the specific animals in the zoo........that said, I find the conditions in most zoos to be deplorable, and I do wish they were only for injured or almost extinct animals more so than they are.

I mostly agree with you on this. I have a hard time at zoos not feeling completely sad. But what about in cases of near extinction? Could zoos maybe reinvent their focus to preservation of species and not human enjoyment?

Edit: Oops ... Mike said it better just above.

Hm ... I have to disagree. You and Chi are right to an extent - we definitely need to do our best to preserve endangered species - but zoos should not be a place for people who don't have access to TV shows about wild animals to learn about the same. First off, who doesn't have access to TV? Secondly, can anyone possibly say without a smile on their face that visiting a zoo is even remotely comparable to learning about nature?

Please understand I'm not trying to be offensive or pick a fight in your wonderful thread - it's just that there's nothing I hate in this world more than zoos. Not even the Yankees or White Sox or even the Packers. Sorry. :)

No offense at all. It is a difficult stance fit me to take. Need on reading about zoos and city people, and how that can make a difference in empathy to animals, I have become less anti zoo over time.
