Would you be able to spend it better than TR on Santana and Nolasco?

would it be wrong to use the money to buy Mauer out of his contract and get a firstbaseman who can hit 30 hr, drive in 115, and hit .315 at least.

Lots of those guys around. Miggy Cabrera never hit all those milestones in a season.

I was a bit surprised by the Sanatana signing to be honest, but not exactly against it when it was announced.  Nolasco was something I think a lot of us thought was a good thing at the time.  Kind of hard to look back now and say 'could you have done better'.  No question the Twins would have been better simply not signing him.  He's spent more time on the DL than he has in uniform, and very little of his time in uniform has been worth the money he was being paid.  Honestly, in terms of money, had that money been spent on a decent CF, I think the team would have benefited the most.

Huh?  He did it in:

2010  38-126  .328

2012  44-139  .330

2013  44-137  .348

I was foiled by my inability to read the phone fangraphs website, said he never hit the rbi, but I should have double checked.

But 3 times in a hall of fame career, still rare.

Sometimes in life, it is better to patch a hole than to spend a lot more money to fix a hole.  In this case, cheaper, better fixes were already available in the form of Gibson, Milone and May.  The Santana acquisition always seemed a head scratcher to me because it looked like to me a fix was already present and he's now sitting in the bullpen.

Dave, I never took you for a hindsight guy. Add Hughes and increase it to 150M, and I would say no. Then again I don't play fan board fantasy.

I like the Hughes signing and extension, guy has #2 pitcher type stuff IMO.

Santana may be ok, but more projects to be closer to a 3/4 then a 1/2, as someone mentioned, it's a lot easier to find mid rotation guys in the org or trade for them etc

What are the odds that Milone out performs Santana the next 3-4 years? Id say at this point it's at least 40%

If you are going to spend in FA I would much rather go "big" on a potential ace, instead of a couple of mid rotation guys like Santana and Nolasco.

At least they are spending money though, and it's not like these contracts will force them to lose any of their main core moving fwd

Just teasing you a bit.  I agree, it's rare even for a HOFer to put up those kind of numbers.
