Pelfrey needs a big start

Good analysis all around but I think it's a bit unfair to compare Pelfrey to Price and say "he needs to make that pitch". If Pelfrey was capable of being David Price on a nightly basis, he'd be paid a hell of a lot more than $5m.

Mike Pelfrey, at his very best, is a #3 starter. On a nightly basis, the good Mike Pelfrey is more like a #4, maybe even a #5. The bad Mike Pelfrey, well... We all know what he is.

Anyway, expecting a #3/4/5 starter to match Price's 2 ER isn't reasonable. Pelfrey did his job and it was up to the offense and bullpen to help him out a little. They didn't.

And the runs Price gave up weren't even earned. Good luck for the Twins had the game tied. A Tiger fan could say that the game should have been 4-0, and 2-0 in the eighth. I look at it as the offense didn't step up, and all game. This team really needs to score 5 runs a game to win consistently, especially with the bullpen. I think each game stands on it's own, and you can only compare the starters that started for that game. Even Price gets bombed at times.

Pelfrey pitched fine I thought.  If we could rewind a couple weeks, and then fast forward with May in the rotation, I'm not confident that May would have done any better, and he almost certainly would have gone out earlier.  At least Pelf saved the pen.  Not sure what more you can ask for from a 5 starter than to go toe to toe with a Cy winner giving up two through 7...  I just wish we had better bull pen options, but Boyer's been good before his recent swoon.  Pens get hot and cold, and I would think we're working on getting some help.  I can see a case for bringing in May, but again, not sold that the results would have been different.  How many times has May pitched an eighth inning in his entire career?  Any?
