Alex Gordon injured, could be out "for months"

This is the worst possible scenario for the Royals. It completely changes the dynamic of the team.

Gordon's slash line: .279/.394/.852

A lot of weight is going to shift to Moustakas, Cain, and Morales (who are all good players in their own right).

I'd put this on par with the 2010 Morneau injury in the "oh noes" department. The Royals were an outstanding team with Gordon. It's hard to say they're outstanding without him, though they'll still be quite good.

Alex Gordon has a grade-two-plus strain, Ned Yost says. The team expects him to miss eight weeks.

Huge blow to them.  Only silver lining is that he will be back this season.

It is a big blow.  It will also mean a lot more time for Dyson and Orlando in the outfield, so the Royals are still going to have one hell of an outfield defense.

I see a lot of their games being decided by one or two runs in the next two months.

Well the Royals are in luck.  When Morneau went down, Delmon Young came through big time to help the Twins to the playoffs and he's now available.  Jim Thome too.

And as always, Cuddyer is willing to shift to first base to help! :)

Somewhere, Joe Mauer is smiling....

Seriously, though, I don't like seeing a player go down like this.

Hopefully Gordon is able to come back in time to help the Royals.

Especially bad luck for Gordon, this is his last season before free agency. He should be eager to prove he's healthy when he gets back.

He's got a player option for next year, and has talked previously about possibly exercising it in the face of all financial reason because he likes KC.

He could decline the option and accept a qualifying offer for a few extra million too.

If there is a bullpen that can handle 1 and 2 run games its the Royals.

He'd make as much or more on the open market, though, assuming a healthy season at the production he's had recently. His option is less of an "option" if this ends up being a lost season.

In that sense, it could be a blessing in disguise for KC, assuming he comes back quickly and effectively enough not to derail their 2015 season, they could suffer without him just enough to possibly retain him for 2016 without any greater commitment.

Of course, if he comes back quickly and effectively enough to not derail the 2015 Royals season, the injury may not hurt his free agent market at all this offseason either...

For those who have been predicting that the Twins will be out of the hunt by August or September, so "what's all the bother with pretending that they are competitive?"....  This is why a team like the Twins had/has to do whatever it takes within reason to hang close and stay relevant.  Cabrera, and now Gordon, have gone down with significant injuries,  the door to the AL Central crown has just been opened a lot wider.

I really hate to see players getting injured, especially great ones like Alex Gordon. Man, the phrase "groin injury" make me cringe. I hope Gordon heals up quickly. KC is a great team this year, and they've still got a chance to make a run. Maybe Gordon can come back later in the season to help out. I wish him luck.
