No, I'm pretty sure they've been called the "Wild" since the franchise was awarded.

 

Actually, they did not have the name when the franchise was awarded. The NHL awarded the team in 1997, but the team name was not announced from the finalists until 1998. Therefore, it is the only team name for the franchise, but it was not the team name "since the franchise was awarded".

Hmmm. I listened to this game, and it was a joke. It wasn't exactly what I would call a well-earned win by the Indians. Just a well-deserved loss by the Twins. Which is humiliating.
