Worley younger and better than guys they kept in AAA....even though he didn't take a 40 man spot.....again, something must have happened we just don't know about.

Just starting to read the offseason handbook.  After discussing his medical absence, TR was asked about Worley and began his response like this:

 

I didn’t see him down there so I don’t know how he pitched and I don’t know what kind of shape he was in and what he looked like and how much interest he had in staying -- and all those types of things would have been a piece to whether or not we would have moved him or not. And ultimately it sounded like we were probably going to be better off if we just try to find a better place for him. And we did. We obviously sent him on to Pittsburgh and he did a nice job, he had a good year so that’s our loss.

Sounds like TR recused himself from the ultimate Worley decision, which is disappointing.  Looks like an old Bill Smith era move, where the front office was just executing moves based on the coaches whims and desires, with little regard for the bigger picture.

 

Just after this point in the interview, he also deferred on the move to add Bartlett to the roster (and what role to give him).

 

It's awfully hard to read that interview and not come away convinced that TR has twice left his job to an administrative type carrying out coaches orders, and TR is weirdly OK with that state of affairs...

Yeah, kept the lefty Diamond. Hey, we made a spot the year before for Blackburn (who at least got injured). And, amidst it all, it kinda is like David Ortiz...the guy was put out there on a waiver claim and no one took him then. Eventually you had a logjam of pitchers at AAA and someone offered you the dollars you might've gotten earlier because they needed an AAA starter, who did his work, jumped to the majors, and made it back.
