Viking's success makes the Twins' life harder

The Twins and Vikings. Both considered down and out for the considerable future after a 3-13 2011/2012 and a 99-loss season in 2011. Unfortunately for the Twins, the Vikings have come storming back after last season and now sit one win away from joining the playoffs. The Twins, on the other hand, again just avoided a 100-loss season. In several ways, this makes the Twins' life much more difficult in several ways.   1. Success of rookies and vets together. Something that the Vikings have going fo

Who will be the one who will push Plouffe at third base for the Twins?

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ---   The Twins' General Manager has been on the record many times this offseason indicating that he would like to get someone who will "push" Trevor Plouffe at third base. The Twins' field and front office staff are unhappy with Plouffe's defense in the hot corner. Plouffe has had his moments there, but he is still learning the position. Let us not forget that the powers of being who feel that Plouffe is inadequate defensively are the

Spending the Twins' Money... or Not

Terry Ryan has been a busy boy. We may or may not be impressed by what he's been doing, but nobody can say he took an early holiday break from the office.   (This article was originally posted at Knuckleballsblog.com) The Twins went in to the offseason needing starting pitching. Ryan told anyone who asked that he understood it was his job to improve the rotation. He also has, at various times, mentioned also wanting to add some bullpen pieces and someone to push Trevor Plouffe at third base.   h

Scrooged!!

It's Christmas time in Twins Territory and what does GM Terry Ryan have to show for it after another 95 loss season in 2012. He made two good trades bringing in power arms Alex Meyer and Trevor May to a depleted farm system. He added a solid middle of the rotation starter in Vance Worley. However, he then disappointed everybody by signing free agent pitcher Kevin Correia to a terrible 2-year, $10 million deal. He signed pitcher Mike Pelfrey to a 1-year, $4 million deal with incentives. Pelf

Spring Training Roster, other tidbits.

Though there may be moves yet to happen, you can view the updated Spring Training Roster here.   Some comparisons between last year's spring training roster and this year's:   Pitchers - Last year the Twins brought in 33 pitchers, this year the number is currently at 34.   Catchers - A year ago there were eight catchers officially invited and one added in the weeks leading up to spring training. This year the Twins have five on their 40-man and have invited four more.   Omissions - All hitter

A Tale of Three Cities

It will be interesting to watch three teams as they try to pull themselves out of the basement. The Twins, Cubs and and Astros all have set out different path towards success. They also represent the three very different markets and revenue streams.     The Cubs have purged salaries in trades and then are putting money back in for next year. They will probably not match last year's payroll, but they will spend the most of the three. They also have the most revenue. Will the additions be enough o

Roster Options for 2013

There is strangely now much more uncertainty about the 2013 roster than there was for 2012. A little over a month ago it seemed like things were clear-cut. There was a 50/50 chance that Span would be traded, but otherwise it looked like much of the 25-man roster was pretty clear.   In the past few weeks, the Twins have traded Span (for prospect Alex Meyer), traded Ben Revere for Vance Worley (and prospect Trevor May), signed Kevin Correia, Mike Pelfrey and Rich Harden, and selected Ryan Pressly

Chris Colabello-Replacement for Morneau?

I am a big Colabello fan. When the Twins picked him up from the Independent League, I was intrigued. His IL numbers were very, very solid. When he came to the Twins organization, he did really, really well against competition that in my personal opinion is much tougher than in the IL. And in nearly 40 more games that he was used to playing, he drove in nearly 100 runs with 19 HR's. His BA and OBP were the lowest of his career this year, making me think that he will improve in them next year. He

Down on the Pond: Twins Top Prospects 16-20.

Bad teams often have a lot of room for talented prospects to move quickly through the farm system and get a chance to play with the big league club. After losing 99 games in 2011 the Twins stunk it up again in 2012 and lost 96 games. Half-way through the off-season the Twins have traded away their two best center fielders and while they have gotten back three quality arms in return, two of those arms still have a ways to go before they make it up to the big league club. The Twins also added a ve

Post Bark’s Lounge

Hello Twin’s Daily Participants,   As the representative for the family of Bark’s Lounge, after his death, I was given the task of sorting through his personal affairs and tying them up. I guess that is why I am submitting this. I suppose it is some form of closure, but this is what I am paid to do.   After reading through some of the material Mr. Lounge submitted on this website, I am under the impression he was a not so well liked member of this community.   A big part of my job is to be objec

The Great 2012 Mulligan Do-Over

The title of this blog is “The Great 2012 Mulligan do-over”. The alternate title that I was thinking of using was “This is a complete waste of time and yours but take a look anyway”. Another title under consideration was “How I spend my days at home as I use my vacation time before the end of the year” and perhaps the best title, that I didn’t use was “The Longest Blog in Twins History”.   I put a lot of time into this and some may find it interesting, if they can actually make it through the

Best Twins Pitcher repeatedly ignored by pundits, fans, why?

Did you guys watch the same Sam Deduno I did? This guy is dominant, has phenomenal stuff, yes he is going to walk lots of people, but this also makes him virtually unhittable....the real problem with Deduno is that he might also be uncatchable, I know the catchers hate to catch him, that is a GREAT! sign...   Get over yourselves...Deduno does not fit the mold of the "Traditional" pitcher and there in lies the problem, the Twins staff and evidently fans, get hung up on the traditional but you
