Nightengale: Twins reportedly offered Delino DeShields coaching position

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Minnesota Twins offered Delino DeShields the first base coach position but were turned down so DeShields could manage the Louisville Bats, a AAA team in the Reds organization.

The Twins were also rejected by Rich Renteria, the ousted Chicago Cubs manager, for the role of bench coach, said 1500 ESPN's Darren Wolfson:

Cool.  I wonder if this means the Twins might grab DeShields in the rule v draft.

I guess it is encouraging to see that they have been trying to be as thorough and expansive as possible in hiring the new coaches. Looking forward to seeing what the Twins do to add talent on the field as well.

That was my first thought, although my guess is there is probably no link at all.

I appreciate the possibility that the Twins made a concerted effort to get some prime and fresh perspective from outside the organization. My only quibble is that Doogie seems to be the willing go-to back-channel guy that the organization feels free use when it tries to shower itself in "post-transaction-runner-up glory."

I liked the idea of Deshields at first base, I've always thought that coach should have a lot of experience reading pitchers, stealing bases, and talking situations.

 

I'm a bit apprehensive about how our choice for that position fits that, but not anything I'm losing sleep over.

I can understand Deshields saying no to the 1st base coach opening if he wants to be a major league manager.  He's also going to manage for an organization who might be one more bad season away from firing their manager.

 

Am I making too much out of the word rejected in the Renteria tweet? It makes it seem like the Twins weren't even given the courtesy of a thanks but no thanks from Renteria.

Since Renteria was fired he's still collecting a paycheck from the Cubs, I'm not sure if the Cubs paycheck gets prorated against any salary he'd get to be a coach with another team, but even if it doesn't, he's already getting paid this year to watch baseball on TV.  It may not have had anything to do with the Twins.  He may have just thought $3 million to take a year off sounds a lot better than $3.5 million to coach.
