Article: With Hope of Contention Gone, What's Next?
rdehring replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agree that most years there are several prospects many of us fear losing and they aren't selected. However, just last year we lost Chargois, Bard and Burdi. Bard came back, but Burdi was stashed on the 60-day DL. Chargois has been effective with the Dodgers and could have helped this bullpen...should they have used him. When I look at the players available this November, I question if they will have enough room to protect all that are real prospects. Thus, the concern for adding Rooker later this year...although I will agree the experience would be valuable. -

One of the more rational reviews of the situation I have seen, thanks. Like Brandon, I question whether Rooker will be added to the 40-man as that would eliminate Player X from being added come November. On the other hand, as you point out, if it is 50/50 that he will be on this team next April the experience would be invaluable. Finally, I question bringing up young relievers. Will they be used? Or will the other 5 or 6 just assume all the bullpen innings until their arms fall off? Thanks again, really enjoyed reading this article. -
Really expect Miranda to move up these rankings over the next year. Have him penciled into my Twins lineup at third base by sometime in late 2021. Leach just needs to pitch!

I don't recall any years like this either, Seth. Signing over 30 players with only 39 picks may be both the most players signed and by far the highest percentage (32 of 39) of players signed. Really surprised that they signed their top 23. Are they meeting with Halverson this morning? If I understand the rules, they could pay him about $400,000 (plus pick up his cost of college) with only a cash penalty. Now time to sit back and watch'em play down on the farm. Will see how they did in five years, or so!

Great seeing Arraez moving up to Chattanooga. Does this put him into position to make it to the Twins sometime during the 2019 season? Hopefully this will open a slot for Lewis to move up. Another good game from Rooker and is great seeing Weil back in the Lookouts lineup. Good appearance from Tyler Jay. Don't know what to expect from him as he has had too many disappointing outings. Also great seeing Benninghoff back on the mound. Not concerned about the results this year.

Expect we will see Jax much higher next winter. Can see him as a #3 starter about the time he will need time off for the next Olympics.- 22 replies

Was also going to comment on Sano's 0-3 (3 K's). But what really caught my eye was Rooker's 2-4 with 2 doubles and RBI's. The young man has an OPS of over 1.000+ since the 1st of June. Seth and I exchanged comments yesterday about whether or not he was likely to be called up in September. We both were of the opinion that he wouldn't as he doesn't need to be added to the 40-man roster this November and open spots are always needed. I expect there is also the subject of service time that would come into play. On the other hand, if he continues to mash what is the best way to have him ready to compete for a 25-man spot out of spring training? Would a September call up be worthwhile? Or does a promotion to AAA serve the same purpose? None of us know what is the best decision other than it is a good problem to have should he keep hitting like he has. Do you know, Steve, why Arraez was pulled from the game after his first at bat?

Article: 2018 Twins Midseason Top Prospect List: 31-35
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So he has similar size. And from everything I read is also fast, possibly faster than Benson. I remember Benson had a full ride to Purdue as a running back. Was out of Joliet Catholic, correct? Rudy's old high school. He may have made the wrong decision, or not?- 12 replies

Have been wondering about Vargas, Seth. Would he be hitting better if he hadn't been waived all over the place last spring and no longer on the 40-man? One can argue that he needed to dig deep and work to get back in the hunt. But after several years of going back and forth, even when hitting well with the Twins, he may have just given up! Don't know?

Just shook my head, Thrylos, when you mentioned Joe Benson. What a talented athlete. He came so close! Is Keirsey as big as Benson?- 12 replies

That's what I was thinking also, Seth. With a group led by Graterol, Wade and Arraez, they will need every spot they can find come November.

Hindsight is always 20-20, but have been wondering for awhile whether the Twins would be better off with Vargas on the bench/DH rather than Morrison. Seems that Sano is starting to heat up. Do you have any reports on the progress, if any, of his conditioning program? Was also good seeing that Whitefield had a nice game. Really like his upside.

Looking at the numbers looks like Rooker and Kirilloff had nearly identical months. Both look like fantastic prospects with ceilings somewhere in outer space. The question I have about Rooker, will he join the Twins this September? And what a month for Arraez. He is what, a year or year and a half away?

Of the top six, Seth, who has the highest ceiling? Are any of these potentially #1 or #2 starters? I would think Balazovic may be. But that is based on a couple early starts where he was as good as anyone could hope for. Should he continue pitching like he has for the rest of the year, I would think he would be jumping up the rankings.

Kirilloff in 2016, Rooker last year and Larnach this year. That trio all have potential to be middle of the order big league hitters. Will be interesting to see which of the three actually makes it to an elite level, if any. And all look to be corner outfielders, although Rooker could also be at first base. Sounds like Larnach should sign by mid-week giving the Twins a few days to try to get that high school third baseman's name on the dotted line.

Interesting that none of the five from this group were previously ranked. Personally like De La Torre and expect him to climb this ladder over the next few years.

Another nice outing for Jax. Seems like he is getting stronger every time out. After struggling a bit last year, Balazovic is starting to look like he may be something special. Could the Twins be so fortunate as to have Graterol and Balazovic both step into the rotation by the end of 2020 or start of 2021? There hasn't been much mention here about the DSL Twins. Yet, they are having a great season. After 25 games, they are 17-8 and only a game behind the first place Cardinals Blue squad. The team is led by three young men from Venezuela. Two of their top three hitters are catchers, 19-year old Jeferson Morales (.377 average) and 18-year old Victor Heredia (.300 average). Their top pitcher is Anthony Escobar who has a 1.82 ERA and 0.64 WHIP. Considering he is only 17, Escobar could be someone we are going to hear a lot of in the coming years. It is the first year of professional ball for both Morales and Escobar.

Have been excited about Moran for over a year. Hopefully, he can move up the ladder quickly and be part of a future bullpen for the Twins. If the Twins are going to win a World Series early in the 2020's, they are going to need three top short relievers to pitch from the 7th inning on. I doubt those pitchers are on the current team. So they are either going to have to come from free agency, trades or the current minor league system. Are any, or all three of those relievers pitching down on the farm today? Could any of this month's top 8 be one of them? Expect we are going to have to wait to see, but am curious about your thoughts, Seth.

Thanks Seth, and good morning! Two things stood out to me as I read this. One, is great seeing Whitefield back on the field at Fort Myers. Also noticed that De la Torre is off to a great start with his bat early in the season. And doing so at Elizabethton while still only 18 years old. We all know his defense plays, if the bat comes along he could be a very exciting prospect at shortstop.

Yes, I remember he hit like this last month almost the entire year at C.R. Or at least it seems like he did. I didn't recall anyone hitting .500 for ten games, but I also don't check that very often. Don't know if he will be a hit for the Twins, but would sure like to see him have a chance sometime next year.

The Twins have played 77 games. Assuming they get all three in versus the Cubs this weekend, that's the 80 games he was suspended. So Monday at Milwaukee (July 2) would be the first game he could be activated, again assuming there aren't any rainouts this weekend.

And what a night for the bats. Arraez goes 3 for 4 with 2 walks, Rooker hits 2 home runs plus a double, and Severino gets 4 hits...and none are hitter of the day. Not saying I disagree with your choice, Cody, just that's a lot of hitting from some exciting prospects. Its only been five games (.500 average), but Severino looks to be a very good prospect. Thanks to Atlanta for cheating! And Arraez is hitting .500 average in his last ten games (46 at bats). I don't recall ever seeing that.

I don't have a problem with sending Romero back to AAA. He struggled through several of his last starts. Let him go back to Rochester where there is less pressure and hopefully a few less innings. Then bring him back in September or at the end of July if Santana or Lynn is traded.

After Rap Debut, Nick Gordon Has Twins Debut In SIght
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting read, Seth, thanks! Expect the timing of that call and where he plays once he gets here will depend on what the Twins do with Dozier next month, if anything. Good to see that he is seeing some time at second base, unlike a few years ago when Polanco was called up and had seen almost zero innings at shortstop.- 20 replies

Looked at the last ten games for Arraez. He has more games with at least 4 hits (3), than he does games with no hits (2). With only three days left this month, his average is .442. Does this kid stay at Fort Myers all year? Took a longer look at another name we often see having good results, Jovani Moran. Found it interesting to see that all of his last ten games have ranged between 2.0 and 3.0 innings. Are we seeing more of this throughout the organization? Could this be another change being implemented by the new regime? And add me to the list of those excited to see Graterol moving up!
