  1. Although Seth has pointed out that he lacks Altuve's quickness and power. But a guy who hits for a high average and doesn't strike out sure can play for me.
  2. De La Trinidad had another good game, which has been the norm for him. Also good nights from Smeltzer and that Duran kid. It sure is exciting to think about what he could become. Lots of nice talent added last month. Hope Arraez continues hitting like he has this last month. Want to see him get his AA average up to .320 to match what he hit at Fort Myers. With zero drop off moving from Hi-A to AA, he seems destined for the Twins second base slot sometime next year. Took notice of Keirsey in your report. With everything else going on we tend to forget about him, but he is having a very nice rookie season.
  3. Dirty shame that they lost on a night when Odorizzi pitched his best game of the year. And congrats to Mauer. Hopefully, he will sign on for two more years (or two one year contracts) so that he can have the most hits of any Minnesota Twin. Got to expect 2400-2500 hits would also give him a much better chance for the Hall.
  4. I was curious about your comment about Kirilloff, "and only added to his strikeout total with two more." Although accurate, it would make the casual reader think he strikes out a lot. That was surprising to me, so I checked. With 35 K's at Fort Myers, his strikeout rate is about 15%, which is rather good for any hitter...at least in my opinion.
  5. With the year he is having, I have to believe he will come back on a one year contract. See how things go next year, then decide again next November. Although I don't know how many, expect he needs more hits to be considered for the Hall.
  6. My first choice, and hope, for second base next year is Eduardo Escobar. Should he not be available, I have no problem with them signing Forsyth to a short contract...one year or one year with an option. In my opinion, there isn't anyone in the system who will be available to play second before mid-season, at the earliest. So they will need to get somebody.
  7. Going to be interesting come November to see if the Twins put Jay on the 40-man roster. Certainly doubtful based on his performance. Would he be lost if they don't? Romero is now past his innings from last year. Looks like he is again running out of gas. Don't know what to think about Grz, sure is doing well in his first season of professional ball. And isn't it great seeing Rortvedt finish strong? They have the Miracle only a half game out of a playoff spot. With time running out, the Kernels have a 4.0 game lead to make the playoffs. This is an exciting roster and should be fun to follow their playoff run. Was Enlow's 8 K's the most of his career?
  8. Thought it may have been a tight strike zone for Thorpe, but that first batter got a ball call on a pitch that was darn near in the middle of the strike zone and another that could have been a strike. Then he got squeezed on three pitches to the next hitter. Hard to overcome those type of calls, but something he has to work on. Rooker's bat has been ice cold all month. Great seeing him have a big swat. Likewise, Rortvedt's average was a bit lower in July, but he has been hitting better this month. I continue to believe that he could be the catcher all Twins fans have been waiting for. I know you don't report on the DSL, but the Twins may be getting one of their best pitching performances from a 17-year old Venezuelan, Anthony Escobar. After pitching 2.0 innings of relief last night, he has 55.0 innings with 50/11 K/BB, a 0.98 ERA and 0.69 WHIP. He has made two relief appearances (1.0 and 2.0 innings) the last four days after not pitching for nearly a month. Does anyone know if he was injured? Or did he cross the 50 inning threshold and they shut him down to save innings for the playoffs?
  9. Interesting, Seth. I would include Odorizzi to the list of guys that should go 4+ innings. Seems that is where he runs into trouble. Will be curious if we see some of this, although doubt we will see it to the extent you have laid out.
  10. In Morrison's defense, sounds like the hip was a problem much of the year. But agree with the comments about Vargas. Wish him well in getting a nice contract with someone else over the winter, someone who will give him a real opportunity. Looks like Cedar Rapids is serious about getting into the playoffs with their lead now at 2 games. The infusion of talent from the trading deadline and draft sure has been a boost for them. Big games from Maciel, Jeffers, Larnach and Helman, who got an XBH for a second straight game. Nice debut for Quezada, real nice.
  11. Its a shame Kirilloff won't have enough at bats to qualify for the batting crown in the FSL. He is about 75 points ahead of the current leader. We've seen Vargas' name in these write-ups a lot this month. Checked and he is over .300 average with 6 home runs in August. Good for him. Hopefully it will get him a contract with someone over the winter. Another great start by Jax, who just might move up the ladder real fast the next two years. And this Colina guy has been good all year, but really good since the break. Expect he is another guy that is going to get a lot of consideration when you do your rankings this fall. And Helman must have read the comment section yesterday and said, "hey, I can hit home runs too."
  12. Nice games from Buxton and Grossman. Expect you are right and Grossman will be at Target Field today. Best to let Buxton have another ten days to feel real good and then bring him up on September 1. Arraez has not hit for an average under .309 in his career. After a slow couple weeks following his promotion, he has his average at AA over .300 (over .400 in August and today is the 19th). No reason to expect he will have anything other than a lot of multi-hit games the rest of the season. This also appears to answer any question about his going on the 40-man and his future with the Twins. Only question for me is when? This year's first and second picks are both doing well at Cedar Rapids, but the shining star appears to be Helman. Highly unlikely he can continue hitting .422, but what a pleasant surprise. Or is it? Great seeing Duran come back with another fantastic outing. Maybe someone at the Strib should forward the box score to Patrick Reusse.
  13. Fort Myers and the Kernels are in first by a hair, ETon has a comfortable lead late in the season. The GCL Twins and Red Sox are tied, well, kind of because the Red Sox are up 4-0 in the 7th inning of their suspended game. And they play each other in 5 of their 8 remaining games, including the suspended game from yesterday. I guess their playoff run has begun! The AA and AAA clubs haven't had great seasons, but the lower five are all in the playoff hunt. That includes the DSL Twins who at 45-20 are tied for first with a week to play.
  14. One of the reason for signing free agents is to be able to flip them for prospects in July. Not something we did much of prior to this year, but they did a great job in the last month with Lynn, Duke and Rodney.
  15. Or Cave takes Grossman's role and Wade takes Caves role. That's start the season at Rochester and is available to move up if/when they need a replacement for an injury for a week, month or as it turned out with Cave, a season.
  16. Good topic for discusion, Nick. And I agree it could be the key to whether or not the Twins compete next year. Am so happy getting May back and looking good. Got to believe he can be one of three top rated late inning guys a successful team needs. Could Duffey be another? One thing I didn't understand is why you would even mention Lewis Thorpe in this article? He is and will remain a starter, hopefully for a long time with the Twins.
  17. Great seeing Buxton hitting at Rochester. Also good seeing Arraez get 2 hits after three games with only 1 hit....total. Hopefully Fort Myers can keep winning. Good seeing Miranda and Rortvedt contribute. No need to mention AK as he has become automatic, day-after-day. Almost the same for Jeffers. Is Prelander Berroa someone we should be high on? Speaking of young unknown players, what do you guys have on Luis Gomez. I know he is a 17 year old shortstop from the D.R. who is the top hitter for the DSL Twins. Was he a big dollar sign a year ago?
  18. I see him as their second option for second base next year. The first is resigning Escobar. Let his agent know they have interest and come back to him if Mighty Mouse signs elsewhere.
  19. And when you consider that Thorpe lost two full years of development, his future is very bright!
  20. You all know that I too am on the Thorpe bandwagon. It started for me back when he was 16 (or was it 17) and pitching in the Australian Winter League. Remember checking his stats every game he started. If memory serves, he had the second best ERA in the league up until the last game or two of the winter when he had a couple normal starts. And all the other numbers, K, BB, WHIP supported his excellent ERA. Was Seth psychic the other day with his post on the 2016 draft. Very good night for Miranda and Rortvedt along with AK's monster. And the #11 pick is also settling in very nicely, Tyler Benninghoff. That pick was the type of move that really good organizations make, great to start seeing the results after his TJ rehab.
  21. Thanks, Seth. Great draft for the Twins. Just got to get all of them to Target Field!
  22. Wells was drafted in 2016, so he doesn't need to be added to the 40-man until after next year. Expect that eliminates any chance he is called up this September. Gotta believe Gonsalves has cemented his name on the list of September call ups. Bigger question is whether or not he gets any starts? With less than 20 games remaining, Fort Myers and Cedar Rapids need winnings streaks...stop these nights where both are losing. Highlights of the night for me were good games from De La Torre and Miranda. And add Byron Buxton to that list. What a night for him getting back into the 'swing' of things. Let him play every other day for a week before getting regular work for a week before the season end and his call up to the Twins. They really need this guy anchoring that outfield...on to 2019!
  23. When I look at last night's box scores, Seth, I see two players who had good nights and aren't in your Top 21...for good reasons. But I suspect both, Griffin Jax and Michael Helman, are going to be in the discussion for good rankings this next off-season. Do you think either is deserving of Top 20 status? Or are they more likely to be in the 20's or even 30's? I don't do rankings anymore and after all these trades am glad I don't. So many players one would think should be in the teens or twenties, probably more than spots will be available for. Speaking of ratings, will you be including guys from the DSL like Anthony Escobar or Victor Heredia and the center fielder from Venezuela they signed for big money?
  24. Rodney's arrow didn't bother me. What did was all the base runners he put on base nearly every time out. Sounds like Santana is guaranteeing he will be a free agent this winter. With comments like that, I can't see how the FO would exercise their option. Although his pitching/comeback from surgery may make a bigger case for that. Personally, I am looking forward to the next six weeks of Twins baseball. Want to see; 1) Garver get more experience behind the plate; 2) Austin getting lots of at bats; 3) Polanco finishing his half year at short and in the batters box; 4) Sano prove that the last year was an aberration; 5) Rosario finishing out what should have been an all-star season; 6) Buxton back in a Twins uniform and getting on base; 7) Kepler continuing his progress; 8) several young starters pitching at the beginning of games; and 9) A good look at several relievers late in games...May, Busenitz, Reed, Moya, Curtiss...others?
