2019 MLB Draft Day 2 Thread
AceWrigley replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ever notice that they have pitching machines for hitters to practice on, but they don't have any hitting machines for pitchers to practice on. Hmmmm.- 171 replies

CRON! Just a little appreciation thrown his way.
AceWrigley replied to DocBauer's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
C. J. Cron was a hot commodity in college. 2009 2nd-Team College Freshman All-American and Mountain West Conference (MWC) Freshman of the Year. 2010 third Team College All-American, MWC All-Star and MWC Player of the Year. 2011 led the nation in OPS (1.320) and SLG and was named a Baseball America All-American. Then drafted 1st-round 17th overall by the Angels. I'd call that a pretty good hitting pedigree. Could have more upside here yet. Don't dis the Cron. -
In the all and all, maybe there is some organizational level kinetic performance energy and all organizations are rather equal in this regard, and this year were using more of it at the major league level then in the past. Zen ciao.

Well, Sano went 3 for 3 today, a single, 2 doubles and a walk for good measure. Who should we complain about next?

MIN 11, CWS 4: Twins Make Home Run History
AceWrigley replied to Thiéres Rabelo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
To TribeAZ13, thanks for the love. I'm a huge Francona fan. After watching him lead the Red Sox to WS wins in 2004 and 2007 and listening to his radio show stuff, I though he did a great job and then getting dumped was a bad move on the Sox part. I knew when the Indians signed him they would be much improved. But I gotta tell ya, after the last few years of getting Kluber-ed, Santana-ed and Carrassco-ed, I don't mind seeing chief wahoo in the rear view mirror.- 36 replies

<< from Tom: I think it would be cool to see relievers get the opportunity to go through an entire turn through a lineup instead of just one inning ... >> This. Especially in the American League. Especially if a pitcher is throwing well. But I get the one inning and done thing too. You have to mange your bullpen looking ahead to tomorrow and the rest of the week. Its just that you'd like your best arms to throw the most innings with a caveat toward leveraged situations. Mike Marshall was a one man bullpen, lol. He also was a travel logistics expert and could figure out how to get all your stuff down to spring training and back again in a timely fashion and end up with the same stuff. Amazing. Just don't ask him about dog catchers.

This is the type of game that the last few years seemed hard to win. Get a lead, the other team comes back and grabs the momentum, then . . . well you know, another loss. Not tonite. Gibby hung in there until he didn't, then the pen men held the fort. Check out the ERA's of the relievers in the box score. Can't remember the last time seeing such a string of low ERA's. Hope Garv is alright. Go Twins!

Jorge Polanco Entering Rod Carew Territory
AceWrigley replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The article is about a 1-year comparison. If Rod Carew holds the 1-year OPS+ record for Twins middle infielders and Polanco is possibly challenging that record, seems like you have to compare him to Carew, don't you? Comparing Polanco to Carew career wise is another question for another day. Was just thinking, anyone remember the 1969 infield of 1B-Killebrew, 2B-Carew, SS-Cardenas, 3B-Graig Nettles? Nice infield. Wish we would have kept Nettles.- 33 replies

MIN 6, HOU 2: MARTIN! MARTIN! MARTIN!
AceWrigley replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Watched the game on ESPN (yes I turned the sound down after awhile). Martin and Garver looked great together. It looked like they expected to get each hitter out. They looked very confident out there. Been a Garver fan since they drafted him (gotta support fellow Albuquerqueans). Is that a word? Mitch Garver - Allstar catcher. Yes. Most similar player on Baseball Reference to Martin Perez through age 27? Bruce Hurst, Most similar by age? Cole Hamels. Just saying.- 51 replies

Possibly. Major League hitters can time the big heaters. Players used to use bats with fatter handles for more surface area to connect with the baseball. Contact was key. Now everybody uses the thin-handled weighted bat they can hammer through the strike zone trying to drive the ball out of the park. I mean, you could lower the mound a little I suppose. You aren't going to get guys to throw the ball with less velocity, so I'm not sure how much tinkering on the pitching end would be useful. Maybe we'll just have to send hitters to the La Tortuga Hitting Academy. I still marvel at Joe Sewell's batting stats (1920-33). He averaged 10 strikeouts per 162 games. 114 Career strikeouts in 1,903 games. That's an average total for a full season today. Man, talk about contact.
-
Guys are hitting them off the end of the bat, opposite field into the 2nd deck. I think it's ridiculous. I'm not a fan of the rabbit ball. The minors are using it this year too. The "3 true outcomes" (homerun, walk, strikeout) style of baseball is boring. Unjuice the ball, push back the fences some. Base hits rattling around inside the park are much more fun, for everyone.

Speaking of Palka, I see he was 1 for 35 (batting average .029) for the Pale Hose and is now performing (or non-performing) in Charlotte where he is hitting .167 with no homers. Ouch. Maybe he'll be back up if he starts to mash.

Is this the Real Schoop?
AceWrigley replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I gotta disagree with you on this one. Brian Dozier is a very passionate guy that wants to win as much or more than most and is a good clubhouse influence. I knew he had the confidence to succeed in the majors; just didn't see the power developing like it did. I'm pulling for him to get going at the plate for the Nats; maybe start spraying the ball around again. I didn't think we would sign Schoop but I'm glad we did. Two years ago, whoever thought he'd be playing 2B for the Twins?- 30 replies

The 12 Stages of Willians Astudillo Fandom
AceWrigley replied to RandBalls Stu's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If turtles can't read, how come they know it's a turtle crossing there? Ahah. The best is when I'm driving home and up ahead there is a vehicle stopped in the middle of the road with its flashers on, and I'm thinking, "now what?". As I get closer I see it's my wife, and she's out there like a freaking crossing guard escorting some "speeding" turtle across the road so it doesn't get squashed by some other driver. God bless that woman.- 34 replies

I've disliked the Royals since the early 80's when we were in KC right after getting married and got snowed out (yes, snowed out in KC) for the opener. They gave us free tickets to the NBA Kings/Jazz game that night and their arena was down across the railroad tracks by the stockyards, which smelled like . . . stockyards. It was the strangest pro sporting event I've ever attended; the first and last NBA game we went to. Had to drive home at night in a driving blizzard. Followed a huge snow plow for all of Iowa. He pulled over for gas, we pulled over. He stopped to eat, we stopped to eat. Felt like the only 2 vehicles on the road all night. It took so long that when we finally got home (Minneapolis), I sat down and my arms and hands automatically raised up to driving position. I've not stopped in KC since. Go Twins.

Astudillo was 2 for 2, raising his career batting average to .368 in 100 plate appearances. That's the highest average in major league history among players with at least 100 plate appearances, just ahead of Ty Cobb (.366). So there.

Not to pick, but what World Series did we win under Calvin Griffith? We went to the series in '65, but lost to Sandy Koufax. 1969-70 we got out Orioled in the playoffs. I pick Terry Ryan. MLB tried to scrap the Twins completely in 2002 and we went and won the division, then ran for about a decade of really good baseball. If we could have made a World Series appearance during his tenure, that would have clinched it. Made the best deals ever getting Johan Santana and cash for Jared Camp, and Nathan, Liriano & Bonser for Pierzynski, though I hated to see AJ go.

Dave Boswell (and Luis Tiant) injuries sped the demise of the 1969-70 Twins powerhouse. Boswell won 20 games at age 24 in 1969 (after being punched out by none other than our manager, Billy Martin). 2 years and only 4 wins later he was out of baseball after an arm injury pitching to Frank Robinson in the playoffs that year. Tiant was acquired from Cleveland only to suffer from surgery and recovery related arm issues and was released. Who else but Boston enjoyed his recovery.

Willians "Action Man" Astudillo belongs on a major league roster. And what better roster than the Twins, right? I was surprised at how athletic he really his. That play last year where he fielded the bunt as catcher and just missed colliding with Berrios and threw the runner out at 3b while face planting was amazing. It looked awkward but he was just trying to miss Berrios while making the play and sacrificed himself to do it. Awesome.
