  1. Speaking of Palka, I see he was 1 for 35 (batting average .029) for the Pale Hose and is now performing (or non-performing) in Charlotte where he is hitting .167 with no homers. Ouch. Maybe he'll be back up if he starts to mash.
  2. I gotta disagree with you on this one. Brian Dozier is a very passionate guy that wants to win as much or more than most and is a good clubhouse influence. I knew he had the confidence to succeed in the majors; just didn't see the power developing like it did. I'm pulling for him to get going at the plate for the Nats; maybe start spraying the ball around again. I didn't think we would sign Schoop but I'm glad we did. Two years ago, whoever thought he'd be playing 2B for the Twins?
  3. If turtles can't read, how come they know it's a turtle crossing there? Ahah. The best is when I'm driving home and up ahead there is a vehicle stopped in the middle of the road with its flashers on, and I'm thinking, "now what?". As I get closer I see it's my wife, and she's out there like a freaking crossing guard escorting some "speeding" turtle across the road so it doesn't get squashed by some other driver. God bless that woman.
  4. We have a turtle crossing near our home (yes, with road sign and everything) and I've named it the Astudillo Expressway.
  5. Astudillo was 2 for 2, raising his career batting average to .368 in 100 plate appearances. That's the highest average in major league history among players with at least 100 plate appearances, just ahead of Ty Cobb (.366). So there.
  6. Not to pick, but what World Series did we win under Calvin Griffith? We went to the series in '65, but lost to Sandy Koufax. 1969-70 we got out Orioled in the playoffs. I pick Terry Ryan. MLB tried to scrap the Twins completely in 2002 and we went and won the division, then ran for about a decade of really good baseball. If we could have made a World Series appearance during his tenure, that would have clinched it. Made the best deals ever getting Johan Santana and cash for Jared Camp, and Nathan, Liriano & Bonser for Pierzynski, though I hated to see AJ go.
  7. Dave Boswell (and Luis Tiant) injuries sped the demise of the 1969-70 Twins powerhouse. Boswell won 20 games at age 24 in 1969 (after being punched out by none other than our manager, Billy Martin). 2 years and only 4 wins later he was out of baseball after an arm injury pitching to Frank Robinson in the playoffs that year. Tiant was acquired from Cleveland only to suffer from surgery and recovery related arm issues and was released. Who else but Boston enjoyed his recovery.
  8. << "Minneapolis . . . It is quite cold in the winter.” >> Minneapolis . .. winter . . . cold ... what?
  9. Willians "Action Man" Astudillo belongs on a major league roster. And what better roster than the Twins, right? I was surprised at how athletic he really his. That play last year where he fielded the bunt as catcher and just missed colliding with Berrios and threw the runner out at 3b while face planting was amazing. It looked awkward but he was just trying to miss Berrios while making the play and sacrificed himself to do it. Awesome.
  10. I hate the freakin' DH. Dump it completely. Replace it in both leagues with the FREE HITTER. Pitchers bat, and a team gets one free pinch hit at bat per game (announced as the Free Hitter). The player who was pinch hit for stays in the lineup, and the free hitter returns to the bench to possibly be used in the game later.
  11. I wanted Wilson Ramos back. The Mets signed Willy for 2 years, $19 mil guaranteed with performance bonuses and a fair option on a 3rd year. Stoopid Mets . . . just kidding. I think they're getting a good deal.
  12. So? It was Super Bowl XI against the Raiders. It was ugly. So ugly, one of the guys at our Super Bowl Victory (sic) Party throws a shoe at the TV, knocking it over, out and dead. Saved us the final misery. I knew right there I couldn't take any more, so that ended my football fandom. Though I did enjoy the Daunte Culpepper era because a lineman sized quarterback is fun.
  13. I thought Joe Kapp, Bill Brown, Alan Page, Carl Eller would find a way to beat the Chiefs in that Super Bowl. I liked some of the Chiefs players except Dawson. But Hank Stram . . . I always hoped a sideline play would crash in to him so hard he swallowed his clipboard.
  14. If he can keep the ball in the park, he should be effective. I like that he reduced his walk rate significantly moving from the minors to MLB without reducing his K rate. More meat for the pen . . . yeah baby.
  15. Hmmm ... the "most viewed articles" has zero comments. "Yeah, I don't really like talking about my flair".
  16. This isn't a bad idea considering the expectations are shrinking for how many innings a starter is going to pitch each game. 40 starts at 5 innings per start is 200 innings; kind of the bench mark for work load. It's easier to find 4 good arms than 5.
  17. In reply to the article picture: Secret photo captures Jonathan Schoop working on the Eddie Gaedel model of the tiniest strike zone in baseball to increase his walks this coming year. You read it here first.
  18. We might end up leading the league in solo homers and strikeouts. Yikes. When did Dave Kingman become the poster child of MLB offense?
  19. <<I get that Austudillo is a fun guy to have around. So was Mickey Hatcher. Coincidence that we won a World Series AFTER Hatcher left?>> Hatcher played 12 years, and hit very well in the post season for the '88 Dodgers, batting over .300 with 2 world series homers. Those early/mid '80's Twins teams had bigger problems than Mickey Hatcher who played his posterior off every game. Besides, anyone who runs Tony Lasorda'a pants up a flag pole as a prank is aces to me.
  20. Byron Buxton: Bunting for doubles. Heck, he probable reaches first before anybody even touches the ball. I don't recall seeing anybody as fast as Byron; maybe Rickey Henderson.
  21. << I look forward to seeing this club become Rocco's Modern Baseball Team. >> Hmmm. If Rocco is Rocco, I wonder who are Heff, Filburt and Spunky? We can change Target Field to O-Town Park. Watch out for Mr. Bighead.
  22. I couldn't believe how emotional I got when Joe came out in the catching gear. When he squatted behind the plate to take that pitch, it was like a reminder of the years we missed with him as our catcher. Yeah, Joe at 1B was good and cool, but he was so awesome as a catcher. Makes you wonder how Pudge, Fisk, & Boone endured so long wearing the tools of ignorance. I have to admit, I want him to come back next year, even if he's a platoon/role player. Go Joe.
