  1. I've never heard anyone speculate that Hendriks will be a strikeout pitcher in the majors, like most Twins pitchers, his control is his biggest asset. Perhaps I could have elaborated more on Slama, but I suspect the club does not believe he will be able to strike MLBer's out with his 92 MPH fastball like he does in the minors.
  2. Are we sure that the Twins are't considering trading Revere rathar than Span? There has been no recent talk of it, but Revere's stock was rock bottom after he was sent down to start the season and people on this site were talking about moving him then. His value has gone way up since. During their careers, Span will likely a better OBP guy and can realisitically play all three outfield positions where as Revere would not be considered for RF by 29 teams in the league. However, he's young, cheap, can hit any pitch and could challnege any ballplayer in a foot race. Some teams put speed as one of the top, if not the top attribute for a ball player. Depending on the GM, Revere may get more, possibly a lot more, than Span could in a trade.
  3. Than how do the Twins fix that other than trading star players? They don't draft or develop pitchers well and they are unwilling to hand out contracts +4 years for arms. I don't want to trade Willingham but if top arms are being offered, the Twins need to do it. No other player will bring back a package even close to what he could. It would be terrible to lose Willingham but does anyone really see this team competing in the next two years? What's the point of keeping a guy durning three consecutive losing seasons? This team is going to lose no matter how potent the offense is if they can't get top of the rotation arms, and fans come out to the park depending on wins and losses, not because of the left-fielder. Some of the Twins worst attendance figures were during the terrible mid to late 1990's seasons despite having possibly the most beloved MN athlete ever, Kirby Puckett, perennial All-Star Chuck Knoblauch and hometown hero Paul Molitor. People were upset the Twins traded Chuck Knoblauch, but in retrospect it was a great move. Does anyone really care that the Knoblauch era didn't last two more years?
  4. Hendriks has the ability to strikeout guys in the minors but at the MLB level his stuff won't translate to the same strikeout success. The other pitchers have always known they were not strikeout pitchers and have already adapted their approace and pitched accordingly at both the minor leagues and major league levels. I suspect the Twins believe that Anthony Slama also has this issue which is why they are always so hesitant to call on him when healthy.
  5. Right. I get it, I was just trying to make the point that it's unlikely the Angels would offer arbitration to Liriano and pick up the options for Santana and Haren, all three of which the Twins may have interest in come 2013 if available.
  6. Capps buyout is only 250k. If the Twins balk at a prospect becuase of that figure, heads need to roll. I also don't mind the idea of moving Liriano to the Angels even if the Twins do have an eye on signing him in the off-season. With tough option decisions on Ervin Santana and Dan Haren, the Angels may not be in a position to offer him arbitration next year. If they do offer arbitration, it may mean the options on the other two may not be picked up. I'd be very interested in Dan Haren and after a sub-par 2012, his cost in terms of dollars and years may be in the Twins realm of possiblity.
  7. I'd still be interested in Robbie Ray, although he's not pitching as well in high A this year. He got roughed up early, but since the middle of May he's been pitching pretty well. Sammy Solis is TJ'ing it currently but he'd still interest me as a PTBNL. Perhaps the Nationals have given up on Matt Purke, he has a hard time staying healthy and currently has shoulder tendonitis, though when healthy he has obvious ace upside. I'd welcome any of these guys as a piece of a Span trade. Solis and Purke have injury concerns, but I think they'd still be worth a look.
  8. Sounds like the Phillies and Cole Hamel's are getting close to an extension. If this works out, the Twins need Milwaukee to sweep Pittsburgh this weekend to get back in the playoff hunt and keep Zack Greinke in a Brewer uniform the rest of the season. Taking the top two pitchers off the board should help the value of the second tier pitchers.
  9. I don't thnk Hunter's coming back unless the Twins look like a contender, and they won't. That being said, if Span gets moved, I could totally see the Twins going after him. Everyone thought the Twins had the outfield covered this year when people were excited about Span plus a combo of Revere, Benson, Parmelee and Plouffe. The Twins inked Willingham anyway and as it turned out, it was a much needed signing.
  10. Anyone know what the Twins have left to spend before hitting the luxery tax? They must still be sitting pretty comfortably.
  11. TR: "We draft people that our scouts recommend. And if they’re recommending them, they got their name on them. They’re going to be accountable whether the guy succeeds or fails." I don't know enough about the Twins scouts. Anyone know of any scouts getting the axe recently? The organization just seems like an old boys club and jobs are pretty secure rain or shine. With the poor development over the past seven years or so, you'd think there would be a lot of scout turnover but I've never heard about an overhaul. Can anyone back up Ryan's claim of scouts having accountablity with their draft picks?
  12. DL: "Is there a specific Minnesota Twins hitting philosophy?" TRL: "You can’t cookie-cut hitters....There are guys that cannot hit the ball to the opposite field. OK. Well then, why would you force him to do that?" That only rings true starting this year once they realized righties had to hit it exclusively to LF in order to hit one out. The Twins used to force EVERYBODY to try to go opposite field, which was why there was animosity with former hitters like JJ Hardy and David Ortiz. I wish Ryan would have acknowledged that this philosophy is new to the Twins.
  13. If the Twins don't sign a big name free agent pitcher, and it's likely they will not, they are going to get so much pressure from the fan base to bring up Gibson. Unless he's dominating AAA, I hope they don't cave, but barring a setback, I doubt they will be able to resist a callup any later than the All-Star break 2013.
  14. Good link to a Twins related article, but the title was more inflamable than the comments. Without even directly quoting Valencia, John Shipley tells us through Chirs Perez, that Valencia isn't happy in AAA. You don't say Shipley, most people are thrilled with a demotion after holding a higher seat for two years. The only dramatic thing about the article is that Perez can't name Trevor Plouffe. Get to know him! He's coming!
  15. There is a lot less tolerance for losing in Philedelphia than there is in Minnesota. Here we say "Aw shucks, maybe next year." In Philly, the entire organization gets death threats from half the population. Maybe it's time we start throwing beer bottles and snowballs at Santa to show management we are serious about winning too. Minnesota Nice certainly helps to encourage tolerance for unimpressiveness.
  16. I'm sure his stock will go up next year when he's a senior instead of a junior with another 120 hard innings tacked on his shoulder. Those college coaches at the big programs never abuse their pitchers in a way that would make MLB scouts cringe.
  17. After 12 games in E'ton, Hicks is holding his own. He has stroked only one HR which is his obvious strength, but he is hitting very well. His line is .298/.411/.426. You'd like to see a higher SLG but his strong OBP shows that he can draw walks at this level. He has hit safely in nine of his 12 games, three of which were mulithit games.
  18. Over the last couple of weeks Morales doubled his HR total to 4. Those were his only extra base hits. His strikeouts have been down over the last couple of weeks and his walks have increased but he's still hitting .209/.282/.287.
  19. Well if resigning him is a legit option, why not engage him in extension talks now just to see where the team and the pitcher stand? At the very least it will show other teams that the Twins (a. still value Liriano, and (b. believe that his injuries/inconsistancies are behind him. If other clubs see that the Twins still want him, it may sway the teams that think the Twins are simply trying to dump him in return for next-to-nothing. It would also be helpful to find out through extension talks if Liriano still wants to be here, and it may give the Twins a better idea of what he and his agent think they will get on the free agent market which will determine if he will or will not accept arbitration. The Phillies and Brewers did this to better gauge the feasability of keeping Grienke and Hamels. Both are signifcanly better pitchers, but now both clubs have a better understanding of where the gap will be when free agency hits when the option of a trade is long gone.
  20. If you didn't know the color guy was Mitch Williams, you'd think it was the Rangers PR guy. It's almost like he expected Bremer to call the game partial for the Twins so he felt obligated to take the Rangers side.
  21. Not to be the hindsight guy, but why was Diamond pulled after 91 pitches? You'd think the de facto ace would get to cross the 100 pitch mark if things are going well, especially considering how he is the only one who can be regularly counted on for giving the bullpen a break.
  22. I'm only seeing the game on a gamecast. Did Mastroianni seriously get tagged out on a failed squeeze?
  23. No one switches until they can get better instruction in Ft. Myers. After playing in high A and being around better tutors, the organization will have a better feel for their ability to handle 3B down the road.
  24. Considering the success righties have compared to lefties in Target Field, I hope his right handed swing develops. I wonder if most teams disagree with BA's rankings, or if the Twins have to overpay for some reason? So far this is the second highest international signing this year. The Yankees got the number two guy for less.
  25. His BA against RHP is slowly climbing. The fact that his OBP from the left side is only 15 points different than the right side tells me there is no reason to table his switch hitting asperations.
