  1. I'm just curious from the Buxton backers, why do you feel he is such a safe bet? Either way, making "safe" decisions is how a club wins multiple division championships but gets trounced annually in the playoffs. Congratulations Twin's front office you have finally conditioned the fan base to think taking chances is a bad thing.
  2. Clearly you did not watch the game as the ball at no point appeared higher than the outfield fence. At this time a higher power is the only explanation. Still waiting on the physicist. Californian arm-chair scientists can continue to speculate without a thesis and theoretical proof.
  3. 37 GiDP's will be tough to reach, but he might be stubborn enough to do it. The defense plays him right up the middle because that is obviously his preference. The 2B is giving plenty of room on his 1B side if Mauer would only try to pull the ball. Of course he could avoid the infielders all together if he would stop thinking that a 58% groundball, 18% flyball rate is the key to winning a batting title. A 25-29% flyball rate won him batting titles in the past, I don't know what has changed the last two years. His three seasons where his groundball rate was +50% were the only seasons he did not hit over .300.
  4. In fariness, he did say Twins history. Only Blyleven and Johnson are in the hall wearing caps from this franchise and only Blyleven as an actual Twin. I might argue if anyone was comprable in a Twins uniform it might be Jim Kaat. He should be in the HOF, if he hadn't been shoved to the bullpen after age 40, he surely would have had the 17 extra wins needed to reach 300 whis is basically an automatic qualify. That said, I don't think any Twin was as dominant, even Frank Viola in his prime, as Santana.
  5. I would like some physicist to explain to all of us how that Mauer HR made it out of the park. I don't know if I've ever seen a ball with that low of a trajectory make it over the fence. That line drive shows that Mauer still has plenty of power, normally his swing just does not naturally take advantage of it. Nice to see Plouffe perk up. Two run producing hits and unbelievably only one was a HR. Boy would it be nice if he could find away to be a short term answer at 3B.
  6. Why would anyone hold a grudge toward Santana? He didn't demand where he wanted to go, he just wanted the 6-7 years that elite players like him were getting and the Twins would not offer more than 4 or 5. In my humble opinion, I hope Santana not only succeeds but excels. Let us not forget that without thier contributions with the teams they played for after the Twins, neither Rod Carew or Bert Blyleven would be in the Hall of Fame. Santana is far from a sure thing, heck, his odds are still probably less than 50% at this moment, but baring another extention with the Mets, if he does make it into the Hall, he's going in as a Twin and that would make me proud. For the same reason I'm cheering for success for Joe Nathan as well.
  7. Ben Revere and Brian Dozier are the only players drafted by the Twins after 2006 that have made the majors. That rate of development is baffling especially considering how many college arms the Twins have taken. Jeff Manship was drafted in 2006 and despite the team's desperate need for starting arms, his 6 career starts are the only ones the Twins have gotten from a draft pick since the 05 Garza/Slowey selections. Not acceptable. This team needs some new blood in the scouting department and front office to tell them "Adapt or die."
  8. I think the conversion to pitcher would be a lengthy one. Not only has he not pitched in half a decade, but he only did so at the HS level. It could be done, but if the Twins do it, he might not be ready for the Twins liking before he would become a minor league free agent, in which case the the Twins would have groomed him for another club's benefit.
  9. Number #7 looks like Kevin Slowey. That is the way he signs his K anyway. Also the one labled Jake Mauer looks similar to a JC Ramero auto I have. If the above poster is correct and Joe Mauer is ten, Jake Mauer is likely the one you originally thought was Joe. Does #11 have the number 36 under it? I have a Joe Nathan ball that looks nothing like the words Joe Nathan but the first part of your signature looks exactly like mine and I do know that my odd looking sig is in fact him. #6 is Nick Blackburn and it has the #53 under it to back it up. #2 is Scott Baker.
  10. You don't seriously think the players union would let Joe even consider this do you? I really doubt you'd give back your paycheck if your boss said you were doing a satisfactory job but they were hoping for more.
  11. It seems that the people who want to hold onto Willingham are thrilled that he is exceeding expectations. So than does that mean he should be traded after he has come back to earth when his value is down and the Twins would get less for him? The next couple of years do not look to be bright so the negativity is going to follow regardless of having a possible 30 HR LF. When was the last time someone said they were happy that the Twins held onto Marty Cordova after two strong first seasons despite the fact that the Twins were in the middle of desperate rebuild mode? A better example would be established star Chuck Knoblauch. Fans were up in arms about trading him away despite the fact that they had just completed their fifth losing season in a row, yet it turned out to be a great move for the Twins and no one's complaining now. Knoblauch was a career Twin who was a big part of the last World Series team. Willingham has been here two months. Fans would get over it.
  12. The article probably wouldn't have been so obviously useless if it had been titled, "Wow, These Twins are Bad!" Since he decided to go with the current title, I expected him to provide insightful suggestions. Had it been just your average 'Twins Suck' article that are everwhere (including this site) and it would have gone unnoticed but the auther implied that he could fix the team.
  13. The good news for Morales is that his strikeout rate has decreased over the last 10 games with only 7 in 31 plate appearances. The bad news is the increased contact is not leading to hits as he has only managed three over that span with 1 BB to boot. His season .547 OPS in A ball is alarming. As he should be due a 40 man roster spot next year and he clearly does not deserve one, Morales could be a casualty later this summer as the short season leagues get underway and some rosters start to get shuffled.
  14. I didn't get to see the game, just the online gamecast. One thing that Frankie seems to do consisitantly is pitch better as the season progresses. Maybe it's the weather or maybe he needs a couple months to calm his nerves, but April and May are usually borderline disasters followed by solid summer months.
  15. Nice work. These are a little more depressing than one would hope, not due to your writing, just due to the scouting and developing. The 2009 version is particularly troubling. Thanks for putting these together.
  16. As long as Mauer is the DH and not 1B where he has a .569 OPS this year. I'd prefer to not have a negative WAR at 1B and C everytime Liriano pitches.
  17. I have to say, the charts look pretty similar to my eye except that it looks like he was chasing more farstballs up and sliders darting out of the strikezone. I'm sure clubs did do some scouting on him but seeing as obviously not every pitcher throws sliders, his recent struggles may have something to do with the type of pitchers he has recently been seeing.
  18. Do the Twins then go then with a 14 man pitching staff? They are still going to want 8 BP arms seeing as 4-5 times a week the starter wont pitch into the sixth inning. The White Sox did have Buehrle, Floyd, Jackson and Danks as innings eaters.
  19. Well ain't that a peach.
  20. His last name is fun to say.
  21. If he proves he's healthy until the trade deadline Morneau would bring back a better return than many people are predicting here. John listed the Pirates, Blue Jays, Marlins, Indians and Mets as possible suitors and others in this thread have mentioned the Cardinals, Rangers, Phillies and I'd throw in the Dodgers with their new ownership, poor 1B play and division lead. It's all about supply and demand. There is a ton of demand for a power hitting firstbaseman and very little supply. If multiple teams are interested, odds are the Twins are going to get a fantastic offer from one of them. If he can show he can stay healthy, he is definately a player that could put a contending team over the hump, and that is what teams are actually paying for.
  22. His K/9 rate is 2 points higher than it was in A/AA last year. That rate won't last. He probably could have been given a shot, as mentioned before he'd probably be comparable to the other young arms, but he also wouldn't have had the prep time to get ready the rest of the Twins AAA arms have had this year as he would have spent his first 1-2 months trying to figure out how to work in the bullpen. How would the Twins have re-stretch him out? They wouldn't have been able to send him to Rochester to do it.
  23. About time the Twins play this game the right way! The more "untouchable" Morneau appears, the more other teams are going to have to overpay to get him. I want Justin around until he retires but putting sentimentality aside, the Twins need to play this the same way the Padres did with Adrian Gonzolaz and the Marlins did with Miguel Cabrera. Seriously, telling Jayson Stark, one of THE biggest national names this bit of information is the best way to strengthen demand. Now to get him, another team is going to have to come hard for him if they want him, instead of being able to act only lukewarm to trading for Morneau. This is the opposite way the Santana deal went down, where the Twins were actively shopping him which enabled the Yankees, Red Sox and Mets all to act like they only had moderate interest therefore not having to give the top package. Terry Ryan is taking a page out of Rick Spielman's playbook when let he lied to the national media that the Vikings did not have Ryan Kalil on the top of their draft board. The local guys knew that was BS but it didn't stop ESPN from running with it.
  24. He needs to stay healthy, but we shouldn't be fooled by his percieved lack of production. Despite missing time, only Edwin Encarnacion and Paul Konerko are having better years as AL firstbasemen. Morneau has a higher OPS an more HR than the rest of them. In fact he has as many HR as Mark Teixeira and Adrian Gonzolaz combined. An All-Star birth and even a HR derby spot are not out of question. Those marks on a resume mean a lot if you shop a player the same year. The Baltimre fan base would get excited when their newspaper gets to print the headline ORIOLES TRADE FOR FORMER MVP. $14M left for one extra season will only be a problem if he gets hurt again.
  25. I agree it's wrong, but it's a violation that bothers me very little. I'm sure ESPN uses those profits to subsidize the crap they are shoving on the air every day. Until they start paying US for airing the Dan LeBatard show, or LeBron James' "Decision", I'm not going to shed a tear for that monopoly. Other sports sites seem to be managing to survive without charging content fees. Posting it is wrong, but it's more on the lines with running a stop sign, not vehicular homicide.
