  1. There is always plenty of talk about college coaches abusing the arms of the starters, and teams are concerned about the high number of pitches they go through per start. This practice may not be connected, but the Twins have recently been stung by Gibson and Wimmers going down. I don't want to claim the Twins are drafting college bullpen arms with the plan to convert them to starters because they see it as a way of getting around the typical abuse to college starters arms, but it may have factored into the decisioning.
  2. Obviously they will give most if not all these guys a chance to start. The Twins do not have much of a history of doing this but they are attempting to do it with both Boer and Boyd, both profiled as relievers last year. They also gave Gutierez a shot to start coming out of Miami. Hopefully the results are better this time around. I think most of the frustration comes from the passing on names people are more familiar with. I just wonder if these guys still have "power" arms when they get converted to starter.
  3. Thanks, I had collapsed that part of the page thinking it was just a pop up for their advertiser.
  4. Does anyone have a draft tracker? All I can get is the live feed from MLB's website but if they are providing a tracker showing who's currently being picked, I can't find it. Maybe they are doing this to prevent other sites from picking up this info? I can't find a working tracker on CBS or ESPN either.
  5. You mean 2 top 65 picks.
  6. Then perhaps we need to see a new thread detailing the 06-08 drafts seeing that the theory is that we have had enough time to evaluate those players. Just a guess but pretty sure the tone for that thread would be as negative if not more so than the current mood of this forum.
  7. His sentiment may have missed the target, but when the main adjective for the #2 overall pick is "projectable" there is room for concern. Projectable is basically and optimistic way of saying maybe. Are we really so certain that the Twins are going to develop power in a guy who as of now does not posess it? There is no track record to show this organization has the knowledge and instructors to do this. Skeptics have the right to think his true upside may be closer to Michael Brantely. I'm just playing devil's advocate, I'm going to back this guy until he proves undefendable, but there is plenty of room for doubt, I'm not going to bash anyone who disagrees with the pick.
  8. Buzz killed. I don't think there is a very high ceiling for Bard.
  9. Perhaps picking Barrios was a prelude to picking over slot at 42.
  10. Drafts are so exciting. Wishing we had another pick for letting Capps walk though.
  11. If anyone can afford Mccullers it's the Twins. Bill Smith always said he was a numbers guy not a talent evaluator. Time to make yourself useful, crunch the numbers and make this fit.
  12. I'd be pretty upset if I was a Pirates fan right now. This is immature, hemade his bed by signing with Boras, he needs to sleep in it.
  13. What does Appel think he will accomplish by going back to school unless he drops Boras? Nothing will have changed and noone will pay over slot.
  14. Depends on who drafts him but seeing as the Twins are giving both Boer and Boyd shots at atarting I would think they would give this flame thrower every opportunity. Many people had both as bullpen arms last year.
  15. I don't want to watch. I really want McCullers but I know he's going to goright before the Twins.
  16. Surprisingly Bowden cleared waivers and the Cubs sent him to AAA. Not sure why the Twins are so eager to take chances former OF fringe prospects but not pitchers. How strong does Ryn think this staff is that no one was expendable?
  17. Absolutely. If the Pirates can make Appel fit, the Twins can do the same with Giolitto.
  18. I think he was bummed out because his girlfriend had just asked to borrow his credit card as soon as the pick came in.
  19. Ha I find it hard to believe Boras engineered his client going to Pittsburgh! I guess we will see Appel here after all we just have togo to St. Paul
  20. Safe isn't the same as sure thing and Buxton is no sure thing. Regardless, safe doesn't win the World Series, no one gets to the top without taking some risks, something the Twins have always been frightened to do.
  21. Dustin Pedroia is 5'8" 165lb's and has more HR than 6'+ 200lb+ Mauer and Span combined. I just don't see Buxton suddnely finding his power in this organization, there is just such little track record for it. In the last 30 years you can count the consistant and legit power hitters the Twins drafted and developed on 1 finger. Chris Parmelee was even transitioned away from being a slugger, it might have been the right move, but I don't think the Twins have a very good template as to how to develop power while keeping the other 4 "tools." Maybe Buxton is the exception, and I know I'm in the minority, but I think the odds that he develops MVP credentials are no better than any of the hard throwing pitchers.
  22. That's true, but I don't think it would be fair to say the issues are the reason for his problems on the field. Like Buxton, everyone said he had the frame to develop power, but Tate has yet to hit a HR outside of rookie league. Denard Span is 6'0" 210 lbs, Joe Mauer is 6'5" 230 lb, both were drafted out of high school and have the size for power but did not develop any mostly due to their swings and approach at the plate. We can't possibly think a guy who doesn't have high school power is going to suddenly develop it when the Twins hound him to constantly go the other way.
  23. It seems inevitable. I still don't know why there haven't been any comparasons to Donavan Tate, they seem so comparable, same size, position and stats; both are "5 tool" guys from rural Georgia devoid of real compition. Tate has been such a bust, it worries me. It just seems like there was a vacuum caused by a lack of big name bats this year and Buxton is the name who got pushed to fill the void.
  24. It would be well woth the risk in my opinion. What's the worst that happens? The Twins would get an extra pick next year if they are unable to sign him this summer. Seeing as everyone is down on this draft class, maybe that's a good thing. Besides, it's not that the Twins CAN'T go over the draft allowance, it's just that they get penalized if they do. If they go over only 5% of the allowance they get taxed 75% on what they go over. That would be about an extra 600k they could spend if someone unexpected fell to them as long as the club is willing to also give 450k back to the MLB petty fund. An extra million is a lot but if someone like Giolitto was a free agent, a deal would not be held up because of that figure. Going over 5% forfeits future draft picks so that should be out of the question, but going over 5% should be an option if they really are getting a steal.
