  1. I'd say Cormic McCarthy wrote that except he doesn't use quotation marks.
  2. Teams can only spend $2.9M on their international signings. Money shouldn't be a factor for any team any more when it comes to signing international players. If there is potential superstar, it should now come down to whether a club thinks the player is special enough that they are willing to spend their entire budget on one guy. Even before this budget though, a $10k bonus would get most international players. Only a handfull of the very high profile kids were getting seven figures. This does exclude the Asian markets, or Japan at the very least. Those guys can still come over here and demand big money.
  3. I doubt there would have been much cheering had Thome hit it in the top of the ninth to put the Phils up by two. The fans cheered for the most universally loved player in the game who just happened to leave ther favorite team under friendly circumstances. What else were they going to do after paying thirty bucks to watch a blowout? It's either stay and cheer for Thome or take off early and bitch about it at Hubert's.
  4. Going to need Butera early today.
  5. Jim Thome his improved his average from .214 to .289 in ten innings so far against the Twins.
  6. 5th rounder Tyler Duffy signed for slot.
  7. The Whie Sox released Terry Doyle, but before anyone thinks about the Twins rectifying their previous mistake of giving him back, it sounds like the Sox released him so he could pitch in Japan.
  8. To get a compensation pick going forward, you have to offer the player a hefty salary. I believe it is the average of the top 150 player salaries which I have heard would be $11-12M dollars. So the Twins could offer that, but he'd quiet possibly accept and the Twins would be stuck that big chunk of change. Somehow the big market teams got this system swung to favor themselves. It will now take a super-star for a small market team to feel compelled to offer that salary, where as a team like the Yankees can certainly offer it to some one like Nick Swisher confident that even if they end up having to overpay him by $4M or so, it wont affect their budget too terribly.
  9. Having a former player as the color guy is a good move and Gladden uses his history with the club well. He was with the team during the glory days and his stories and ability to reminisce about his teammates help provide optimism with the listeners. He isn't a good play-by-play guy but if anyone remembers 5-6 years ago (or was it longer?) when they first started giving him an inning or two, he was actually worse than he is now. He was trying to do his color schtick while the plays were going on and the listener had no idea what the hell happened. He'll never be a good play-by-play guy but at this rate he might be passable in 2020.
  10. Since his recall coincided with Mauer's thumb injury, I assumed he was going to replace Mauer who was going to end up on the DL. That didn't happen, but it wouldn't be the first time that the club was unsure about the extent of a Mauer injury. It would make sense to have another strong bench bat during interleague play, only the Twins are playing at home this week and have no need to pinch hit for the pitcher. Perhaps he was called up simply because there really aren't any other deserving players in AAA. I'd still rather call up Burroughs to sit on the bench 5 games a week and let Parmelee play everyday.
  11. Hyopothetically, what do the Twins do if someone starts asking about Trevor Plouffe? He can play all four corner spots, and it is quite possible his value will never be higher. Just asking if people here think his current production is telling of future success, or if it's unlikely to continue but the Twins have suddenly found themselves with a player who may bring back a pitcher more likely to contribute in the future.
  12. Hey Mazzilli, there's an infield spot up for grabs in Beloit. Sign your damn offer and be thankfull you were the first of only two college infielders drafted by the Twins this year.
  13. I don't put much more weight on 7 poor games in AAA than I do in the 4 positive games in A. There's not much room for him right now if the Twins want to continue to give at bats to Revere, Parmelee and Doumit. If they want to pick him up and drop Butera, Mastroianni or one of the bullpen arms I guess that would be fine. He won't gain too much, but when contending teams get desperate, the name Vladamir Guerrero is probably more valuable come July 31 than he is now if you want to hang onto him that long.
  14. The Twins have made many questionable promotions, but I'm guessing since these are catchers who likely have no MLB future, the Twins are more concerned with defense and game calling for the young pitchers they need to develop than they are with OPS. That being said, I really have no clue as to which of these guys are the better defensive catchers.
  15. Sano's K rate last year was 26%, it has risen to 27% against better compition this year. Meanwhile His BB rate was 7.8% last year and 12.4% this year. Seeing as his BB rate has improved despite more strikeouts, I would say the reasonable conclusion is, yes, they are pitching around him.
  16. Corey Koske was terrible at 3B at every stage of the minor leagues and he was 3 years older when he was at Sano's stage of development. Derek Jeter made 56 errors when he was 19. No need to kill this trial 2 months into a hopefully 2 decade career. I think half of the issue is Sano keeps getting compared to Miguel Cabrera. He has a very strong lower half that some day may turn him into the Cabrera we know today, but at this point he is not the big, hulking oaf many may think of when they picture Cabrera. Sano's certainly not as spry as Alex Rodriguez, but his body looks more like 2012 A-Rod than it does Miguel Cabrera. He can't get moved from 3B until at the very earliest, the better coaches at Ft. Myers get to work with him.
  17. Sad news. I've said before in other threads that Blyleven and Frank Viola are the only two guys who anyone could really consider an ace that the Twins have drafted and developed. Dave Boswell may have been better than both of them had he not blown out his arm in that epic playoff performance. He was on his way to a stellar career.
  18. Unfortunately you don't get much value back that way. Other clubs wont be giving up any promising youngsters for a rental player, particularly a bullpen rental. They also wont give up much for guys who are under-performing and carry a large contract. If you want to score quality prospects you do have to trade the productive players under team control.
  19. Ft. Myers has lots of party-orinted women too, unfortunately they are of retirement age. Of course they are quite the prize seeing as after getting through the GCL or E'ton, the players are penalized by having to pick from the Wisconsin groupies in Beloit. You'd think they'd be motivation enough for Sano to improve his defense and contact rate and get back to Florida.
  20. Good lord, I had to google that. I guess I don't get out enough, and by that I mean stay in and watch internet cartoons!
  21. I don't think I've ever heard a best catcher discussion where Campanella wasn't named. I'm guessing whoever compiled the list forgot him all together rather than purposfully omitted him because it's not like they left off his contemporaries in favor of new athletes. Campanella is easily top five on every other list.
  22. Would the old House of David baseball team suffice? That was a pretty interesting group of players from the early 1900's. How the catcher didn't step on his beard when he squated behind the plate was a pretty amazing feat.
  23. I'm not up to date on new internet deriding, is the insult jackanape really back in fashion, or is Shakespeare once again required reading in school?
  24. The list is a great point of referrence regardless of any potential debate on the order.
  25. True, but Ryan also said Scott Baker would likely be ready for opening day. I'm not confident in his medical opinions.
