  1. Why does it have to be one or the other? Why can't the Twins have Vavra and Bruno as hitting coaches? This team has way too many young players for one hitting or pitching coach to work with everyday. I'm not trying to defend him, but there is no way Vavra can give an hour of one-on-one time each day with every hitter who is struggling with his swing.
  2. There has been a lot of criticism of Joe Vavra over the years. Fair or not, there are way too many young bats on this team for a hitting coach to work with everyone on a regular basis. If ten guys need some one-on-one time, even just an hour a day each would be too much to handle. Going by that logic, why don't the Twins do something trailblazing and hire an additional hitting coach? If you had two, they could each focus on the various strengths of hitters, because the team does need to face the fact that not everyone is very good at going the other way and more of an uppercut swing does benefit some hitters while others need a more level swing. I don't see what it would hurt other than in the payroll, but honestly, a hitting coach is probably not getting paid very well.
  3. I would think this would indicate that the Twins are going to count on Morneau to play in the field more than before he went on the DL.
  4. Keeping Butera as the backup catcher obviously would be the hangup, but if the club thinks that loosing 96 games instead of 99 games will apease the fans, they are sadly overestimating everyone's tolarence for losing.
  5. I think you are going to need a further analytical breakdown due to the various Zambranos and Zimmermans. My money is still on Zimmer coming out ahead but if you listen to some folks Zunino is going to be your man.
  6. Giolito's injury is more concerning because it is arm related as opposed to Zimmer's hamstring. That said I still like Giolito a ton. I'd be nervous but excited if he went #2. Zimmer, Giolito and Gausman are my choices, though it sounds like Zimmer is the only one of the three being considered.
  7. The Nationals reportedly are scouting Red Sox catchers to replace former Twin Wilson Ramos who looks to be out for the season. Should the Twins be trying to engage a team like the Nationals who have plans on contending in the hopes of them overpaying for Ryan Doumit? The Nationals have quite a few organizational prospects in the 10-20 range that I'd be interested. I'd be interested in a guy named Robbie Ray, he's in the lower ranks but he has a strong arm. They have a couple 1B with quite a bit of power and high K rates who are in the upper levels of the system Chris Marrero and Tyler Moore. They also have some middle infielders that hit for average. Of course the "We are family" Twins would probalby insist on Stever Lomardozzi Jr who hits better than his dad. Good speed, SLG will probably be low at the MLB level, OBP probably respectable.
  8. Which ever of Willingham and Span is still on the team at the All-Star break.
  9. Zero HR for Rochester 1B's this season. That position is supposed to be a power contributor. I wonder if Chris Colabello will get called up to AAA. He's showing power. His knock would be his low BA/OBP but his K rate is a strong 16% so he's likely got a low BABIP meaning he's having a bit of bad luck.
  10. Aside from the natural injury concerns that come with a pitcher, Buxton is no safer of a bet than the top arms. He looks exactly like Donavan Tate, the 3rd overall pick of the 2009 draft by the Padres. After one season he fell off BA's top 100 prospect list. If there was a sure thing postion player available, everyone would know and there would be no debate.
  11. Maybe. The Twins aren't usually the team to figure something out in a player that other teams couldn't, but if there was an adjustable mechanical flaw they noticed, it could explain why he went to Ft. Myers instead of New Britain or Rochester. The best instructional coaches are in Ft. Myers and they may be the guys to tell him what he needed to work on to fix a hole in his swing, this would also explain why he was only there for 4 games. Of course if that it is true, the Twins would need to explain why top prospects spend an entire year in Beloit instead of two at Ft. Myers with the better teachers.
  12. Playing third in Beloit is no different than Ft. Myers, he can work on his defense anywhere in pro ball. Besides, they have better instructors and coaches in Ft. Myers.
  13. Bautista up 4th. What are the odds he doesn't get a chance to hit?
  14. If you've watched Capps try to go two innings over the last three years it's hard to argue with the philosophy. Edit: After a detailed and well researched review of Capps career numbers, I've determined that Capps surprisingly does not perform well in 1 inning appearances either.
  15. I hate to see Perkins struggle, he's been one of the few bright spots on this team over the last couple of years. Jose Bautista again shows the Twins pitching is the best solution to a slump.
  16. I don't care which outfielder is called up. I just want to see one guy get a chance at full-time duty to see if he can handle it. If not, try the next guy. At this point it looks like there will still be a RF rotation of at least Komatsu and Matroianni likely along with Plouffe and possible Doumit. If the young guys are on the bench every other day, right or wrong, we will be second guessing the organization when they give up on one of them. People are still upset with a marginal prospect like Hughes, why continue in this manner? Don't make these auditions any more arbitrary and opaque than they needs to be, someone needs to play every day.
  17. Sounds like the same thing said about Ben Revere every year he started the season in the minors.
  18. Or which ever team he gets traded to. If this move helps his trade value at the deadline it was a great decision. If a callup coincides with his yearly July surge the team might get some value back for him.
  19. Four innings for Pavano. Wow
  20. Santana is on a record pace for HR allowed and all the Twins can do is ground out to short. Disappointing.
  21. Boer and Boyd are hard throwers but they were only drafted last year. Boar just got lit up for 9 ER in 2 innings last night in Beloit. Seems like he is having a hard time developing secondary pitches. It might only be a matter of time before he's moved back to the bullpen. Gutierrez throws hard but it hasn't really translated into a lot of strikeouts. Anthony Slama on the other hand doesn't throw hard but has strikeout history.
  22. This team has enough vets taking up playing time. Bottom dwellers have no need to trade for broken down veterans at the end of their career. Playing time needs to be set aside for young players.
  23. The scouting for pitching has seemed to be very poor of late. There is a reason everyone knew Wimmers was going to the Twins at pick 21 in 2010 despite every scout saying he was the most MLB pitcher in the draft. The other clubs new he didn't have the stuff to be and ace which is what everyone else targets in the 1st round, yet all the scouts knew the Twins cared about control, not dominance and put the selection to down in ink weeks before the draft even started. Not to take away from the criticism of the scouting for pitchers, but overall the last 6 years have been poor for offense too. Two nights ago Dozier joined Revere as the only players drafted by the Twins since 2007 to make it to the majors. The system is flawed on so many fronts.
  24. Not to mention that the Twins used to be a top five defensive team year in and year out. If you're going to pitch to contact you need stellar defense behind you. That's no longer the case.
  25. The better coaches are in Ft. Myers. They should be working those issues there.
