  1. Nice link. Nothing better than an article that starts my blood boiling on a Saturday morning. If this wasn't Berardino I'd think it was made up or a mis-quote. Our GM actually is most proud of the move that only helped shed payroll. Wow. This gives little hope that the Twins will eat any of Morneau's contract in exchange for a better prospect. Additionally, there is no rule that Liriano had to be traded right at the deadline, there were plenty of us saying last year that he should be moved ASAP before he had his blowup moment. Others were saying his value wouldn't have changed much, Ryan clearly believed it did.
  2. So, who you got winning the Super Bowl? Oh, uhhhhh. Right. Aaaaawkward.
  3. I think you can mention doug fister, you just can't mention how you use one.
  4. Points all his own sitting way up high.
  5. The total contract is big for a mid-rotation guy, but $8 million per year really isn't. I wonder about that #3 starter stuff though. Kind of strange it came out in the week leading up to his signing. Seems to me things like that might get passed around with the intent to drive his price down or chase other teams away. Most guys with 96 mph fastballs have higher upside, particularly guys who throw 96 mph while still shaking two years of rust off.
  6. Pelfrey may be tempted to turn down a qualifying offer, but no team will be willing to pay him AND give the Twins a draft pick. How disappointed would we be if the free agent signing the Twins made this offseason was Pelfrey, and it cost them a high pick? He would surely be forced to accept the offer. I think the QO is too much for a #4 starter, but I could care less either way. It's not like the Twins are going to be spending that money elsewhere. Overpaying for a #4 starter I suppose is preferable to what happens here most offseasons. At the very least we'd get to hear Boras cry about how unfair the system is. That would be a bonus. I'd vote no, but only because I still want to hold out some false hope this fall that the Twins would actually spend some money one a front end starter.
  7. "Pelfrey is almost certainly among the commodities Terry Ryan is shopping with the deadline rapidly approaching, but will other teams focus on his steady performance these past couple months or his numbers for the season as a whole, like an ERA that ranks as the sixth-worst in the majors, or a strikeout rate that is fourth-worst?" You'd think most GM's would do their homework, so I'd imagine they will focus on what he has done lately while throwing his early season struggles in Ryan's face to drive down the price. But this is a bit of a pickle. Why do the Twins so often seem to be on the awkward side of player and contract predicaments?
  8. They don't seem too upset to me: International Free Agents Signing Post - Page 43
  9. It's tough, the Twins have long been thought of as a family that hires within it's ranks or recruits past employees. I'm sure the latin snub isn't intentional, but they don't seem to prefer much outside influence. They can't keep the Old Boys Club going forever hopefully.
  10. Right, I'm pretty sure most people older than 30 consider people from 18 to their early 20's as kids. Sorry to stereotype, but it's difficult to have an adult conversation with many of them and their behavior in public when around alcohol too often warrent this consideration.
  11. You've seen him first hand so your assement has a bolder footing, but you mention this is one of a number of demonstrations. I would then assume the demonstrations are all on-field showboating related? I'm not defending Sano, but I don't think his bragadocious HR behavior neccissarily translates to off field issues. As one poster mentioned, Killebrew was known to admire his HR swing. The ESPN tribute showed a usually pretty pokey Killebrew getting out of the batter's box. Particularly check the 1:38 mark. Check out 1:41 on this Thome highlight: How would that bat toss fly with the Twins brass? I'm not saying Sano is a good guy, but chronic or not, I'm going to need more than his HR trot to make that decision.
  12. Yeah, I want every Twins player to be an upstanding citizen and humble humanitarian, but I think we all understand it's not going to happen. I don't want Sano to behave like Manny Rameriz, but if that type of attitude helps to enable that kind of production and ability to come through in the clutch to win big games, I'll definately take the trade off. Even if he is hard to embrace due to his attitude, a successfull team is very easy to embrace and he may be able to help in that regard. That being said, I don't think it's fair for us to assume he has a bad attitude. It's premature and an overconfident HR celebration probably shouldn't be admissable evidence.
  13. It's a fine line, I'm not defending Sano as I didn't like the showboating, but I also don't want him transformed into a deferrential Minnesota boy-scout. However you said below-average minor-leaguers have been benched for this. I'm just wondering if people have examples of multi-game suspensions for this kind of bravado? A benching for the rest of the game seems like it would occur often, but do other teams other than the Twins have players sit multiple games?
  14. I don't like showboating, but to be fair, those that are critical of the suspension are likely the same people who think that the Twins doing things the "Right Way" is either condescending, archaic or phoney and the "Right Way" is holding the team back from joining the modern age of baseball. I don't think there's any hypocrisy here.
  15. I don't like Sano showing up the pitcher but is this a league-wide standard practice? Surely there have been other minor leaguers who have behaved inappropriately after hitting a HR. Do other clubs utilize the same punishment? This probably wouldn't be an issue if the Twins reputation for bravado suppression wasn't already assumed. A multi-game suspension doesn't seem in order here, more like a stern talking-to.
  16. It is. Top end closers don't generally get moved mid season, and certainly not with a great contract. There may not be a precedent for it. Which brings me back to a criticism I've had in the past, Ryan is often passive and lets the market dictate his decisions instead of having his decisions impact the market. This is his chance, HE can set the parameters of future deals of similar stature. The Cubs have been making bold moves that negatively affect the Twins, time for Ryan to be the one making bold moves. Don't sit on your hands and wait and see if someone will blow you away. Work the phones and drum up a market reminding everyone you have a commodity that no one else does. Be proactive and set the bar and set it high. If you can't get any strong offers, fine, keep him. But give it a shot and put yourself out there. According to the interview with Jack Goin, that isn't happening.
  17. Ha, so the Twins surely aren't taking PEDs. Just perhaps Ds. The Logan Morrison theory applies to the Twins just as easily: Logan Morrison: "You know we're clean. We haven't scored a run in 37 innings." #marlins #braun
  18. Ben Badler at BA says that Gonzalez' ceiling is a #3 starter and floor is a long reliever. I don't have a subscription, can anyone give any more details? That isn't a very glowing assesment and typically #3 starters and long relievers don't throw hard or strike many batters out. Or maybe I just shouldn't be comparing him to the Twins #3 starters and long relievers.
  19. After the JJ Hardy hitting-to-all-fields kerfuffle, the Twins brought in Josh Willingham and let him pull the ball all he wanted. The Twins seemed to come to see Hardy may have been right, at least as far as Target Field is concerned. At that point they also seemed comfortable letting Plouffe take the Willingham approach. I assumed the Twins relenting on what seemed to be a previously strict hitting policy is what benefitted Plouffe. But it could be PEDs though I hope not.
  20. It seems odd, but I agree with the previous poster, the timing doesn't seem to back up the theory. I'm no doctor I only play one to pick up college girls, but I don't think any of these PED's would be that effective the next day or likely even the next week.
  21. I don't think Perkins gets moved in the offseason, simply because not many relievers are traded at that time. There are generally a half dozen guys with closer experience on the market and only a few of them get a large contract. Additionally, many teams seem to prefer to test out guys in their own system. After all, very few closers come through the system viewed as a "future closer," most teams experiment or just stumble upon them, as the Twins did with Perkins. As far as I can tell, Andrew Bailey was the only recent closer traded in the offseason where the buying team's intent was to keep him as a closer. I think this might be a rare position where desperation at the trade deadline would cause the price to be higher than in the offseason. But I also don't think he gets moved by the end of the month.
  22. In all seriousness though. I wouldn't be surprised if Plouffe or another Twin got busted, but upon consideration, I think the relationship angle is a little off. They may be off-field pals, but they still spend much more time with teammates and have a vested interest to want teammates to excell. I think it more likely that other teammates would be turned to the dark side than I do a childhood friend.
  23. On his salary? Plouffe couldn't afford Biogenesis. He'd have to hope that Braun would comp him. Maybe next year when he's arbitration eligible.
  24. I think Law underestimates the deficencies teams are willing to overlook when it comes to drafting SS. There have been some pretty questionable guys picked high lately who had much more serious question marks when it comes to the bat. So many exciting guys. Last year at this time, talk seemed to be of Appel, Manaea, Stanek, Meadows and Frazier. All stayed as first round picks, it will be interesting to see how these guys pan out next spring.
  25. I like the idea of trading with Pittsburgh, but even with Grilli out, their bullpen is strong. Their set-up guy Melancon was an All-Star after all.
