  1. Surely Albers will be tabbed, but the rotation spot doesn't come due for five days. Last time they wasted a spot with Gibson doing nothing for four days between starts, I'm guessing Tonkin gets called up until the Diamnod/Albers start.
  2. Arcia now has OF and pitching duties! He really should have been rated higher as a prospect.
  3. Nice round up. If you're going to do one for August, you better start early. It looks like Diamond is going to make you waste your time by adding a lot of extra digits to his stats.
  4. Can we get a dateline stamp on that quote? I'm not sure which game he's talking about.
  5. OK, overlooking the cash option, I decided to make my prediction. Michael Thomas Minor League Statistics & History - Baseball-Reference.com Michael Thomas, a 24-year-old lefty relief pitcher in AA. His numbers look way too good for a Butera like return but he's not on the Dodgers top 20 prospect list and he is after all only a reliever (until the Twins transform him into an All-Star starter!)
  6. This was tough, I wanted to pick poor relief prospect but I surely wasn't going to pick decent relief prospect. Cash considerations made more sense.
  7. No debate, those predraft rankings obviously aren't a clear indicator of success, but so many of the guys regarded as top international players have been spot on in the past. It's possible the Twins have some insight into some unknown players but they have little experience in the DR so it makes it seem like they are playing the odds with quantity as opposed to the odds with quality and I don't like it. So many of the top Latin players today were highly regarded international signings, the odds of getting a super star seem so much better going that route.
  8. I agree, let the young guys play, put the vets on the bench or where ever else is suitable. However, just so you know, your snub made Chris Parmelee cry.
  9. They could still spend it, but on who? There better be some hidden gems or outside the box ideas because all of the pre-draft favorites are signed or are committed. I HATE the nickle and dime approach to free agency, traditional or international. Spend your money on big players with upside, not a bunch of little players who's performance can be repeated by a half-dozen other guys in the system. I don't know anyone but a hoarder who prefers quantity over quality.
  10. Tuvalu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Tuvalu. Hyperbole can kiss it I guess.
  11. Yeah, the defense would likely suffer but I think it's about developing the young bats at this point, defense be damned. Put Arcia and Parmelee in the middle infield for all I care, I just want to see these guys adjust to MLB pitchers. Thomas is a good story, but at this point he is taking away valuable evaluation time from guys who the Twins are going to need to make decisions on starting opening day 2014.
  12. Spahn wasn't overpowering, but when he pitched, 87 MPH likely would have been a pretty decent heater. Even Bob Feller, who says he threw 105 MPH (total BS) only had a career K/9 of 6.1. Baseball is different today, most teams emphisize keeping the hitters from putting the ball in play, thus pitchers throw harder which is almost surely the reason guys don't go deeper into games and amass much higher inning counts. I want to give Albers a shot, but the other clubs are intentionally loading up on starters with better velocity and high strikeouts, why shouldn't the Twins?
  13. I thought that too but then realized he couldn't have been grabbing Capps' bottom. You would need two hands to do that properly.
  14. Wait, I thought he was still instructing MiLB hitters?
  15. I'm happy with the improvement in quantity of capable arms. I can't say that I'm not a little disappointed in the lack of velocity and/or strikeout ability though. I guess I had my hopes too high after last year's draft class put up big numbers in the rookie leagues and the Midwest League last year. I know the numbers generally drop once pitchers get into full-season leagues but I was hoping they wouldn't drop this much. I was never sure if Melotakis' strikeout numbers were decreased due to lower velocity or if it was because his changeup and curve were still in development. I didn't realize the velocity dropped this much, this seems to be the logical answer. Any idea if it is just the pitcher not being accustomed to a lengthy season or if he was instructed to not overthrow in an attempt to go deeper into games?
  16. Because the cops are on the way after getting a tip about coke and a dead hooker in the trunk?
  17. I hope so, though I wonder how much more an elite closer fetches than simply a very good one. I wonder if the difference isn't negligible as closers are so replaceable. Either way, time to get Tonkin up, it will be easier for TR to let him go if there look to be multiple options to replace Perkins.
  18. This is good to hear. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I always thought Bowden was one of the national guys who thought TR could do no wrong. Every report that I have heard states no Morneau deal happened due to the Twins not eating money. I would rather let Morneau walk than take on any more AAAA players to jam up the 40-man roster, but while the Orioles system is not loaded, they were moving organizational top 10 players this year. K-Rod may have more value than Morneau, but if salary wasn't a consideration, his value couldn't be much more, he is after all only a set-up man.
  19. Last year the Twins didn't promote Arcia as New Britain was in the playoff hunt. This year Arcia is helping Rochester into the playoffs. (seriously, stop laughing, Rochester is actually good this year) I don't think there should be any debate. Let him ride with Rochester the rest of the year and then let him join the Twins next year which will ensure the Twins make a playoff run. It's really in everyone's best interest, and this line of reasoning proves it. You CAN argue with logic; but please don't.
  20. So the team HR title is still pretty up in the air. Nine players within three HR of the lead. Let's get Parmelee back up and see if we can end the season with a starting nine with an even 10.
  21. What's with the "or"? Albers has a surprisingly low-key but impressive track record with affiliated baseball. He's 27 but only been in the MLB system for three years. The increased K/9 is surprising, but with a lefty, you never know, those numbers can sometimes stick even with uninspiring stuff. The strikeouts seem to have increased from the first half of the year, maybe he's discovered something.
  22. Good thing the Twins drafted 3 of them in the first 10 picks this year. Almost like they could smell the Dodgers desperation and were planning to pounce all along.
  23. Not to mention their current backup catcher currently has a Butera-esque OPS of .590. I guess it's fair to say that if baseball was only played with catchers, the Twins would be better than the Dodgers.
  24. So will Butera be the only member of the 2013 Twins to make the playoffs this year? I'll bet his game calling will get that Kershaw guy some Cy Young votes.
