  1. Terrible MLB players. The White Sox cleared 40-man roster space by pawning off two AAAA players on a division rival. These two guys are still clogging up the Twins 40-man which is going to have some tough decisions coming up.
  2. Well according to Liriano, his command improved due to changing his arm angle. Fastball command sparks Liriano comeback | TribLIVE Seems like those kind of adjustments generally fall under the realm of coaches, so yes, I'd say Anderson does deserve some scrutiny for not trying this technique with Liriano while in Minnesota.
  3. No doubt. Although it seems like it should be easier to find 3-4 starters with a reasonable K% than 8 position players with strong defense to compensate for the fact that they have 5 starters who don't. But dang it, playing old school baseball is worth it I guess.
  4. I agree, although Jamey Carroll lobbing 75 MPH meatballs from the mound may make a compelling arguement for those that disagree.
  5. Abreu. I'd always take the offense.
  6. Anyone can play SS, it just depends on what level of liability a club is willing to endure. There are plenty of shortstops today, who if re-evaluated by the same scouts as Guererro, would likely be told that they aren't a shortstop. I seriously doubt any scouts would say Asdrubal Cabrera or Jed Lowrie were shortstops if re-evaluated. You also have players like Hardy or Jhonny Peralta who appear too big, stiff and slow to play the position. I'd bet good money that if everything was equal, plenty of scouts would say those two are incapable of playing the position.
  7. I don't know that Gardy didn't like Hardy, he may have just not liked his approach to hitting, namely grip-it and rip-it to LF. Not surprisingly Hardy did just that on his way to a great season in Baltimore and the following year the Twins had no problem letting Willingham and Plouffe employee Hardy's approach.
  8. I don't think it would be so disappointing if it not for the recent success of so many other top arms. Most seem to be doing well and many are thriving. Sure Gibson was not quite at the same level as Shelby Miller and Jose Fernandez, but he was on the same level as Tony Cingrani and Chris Archer. Likely not coincidentally, those guys can all strikeout the side if need be.
  9. This was my thought. While he already missed any service time plateaus this year, who knows if he spends more time in the minors next year. If the Twins were going to shut him down for the year, clearly they would prefer to do it at the AAA level. Additionally, what else were they going to do with him if they decided to shut him down now? Create a bogus injury reason to place him on the DL or run a 24-man roster for two more weeks until you can expand the roster?
  10. I think this is a quote taken directly from the anti-emperical Gardenhire himself. Strange you two don't get along considering how much you agree about the uselessness of advanced statistics. A side note: I think everyone is missing a huge oversight. Gardy almost exclusively plays "old school" baseball. He often bunts, he pinch runs for his best hitter with two outs in a tie game, he doesn't shift his defense. The validity of bunting in this specific situation is funny because 90% of the time, Gardenhire likely sides with AROG who wants him gone because he didn't follow the rules this one time.
  11. I tend to agree with the OP. Both moves were bush league. What if it wasn't the manager but a young prospect that attacked a member of the other team on the dugout steps to "protect" his teammates? Both moves were basically vigilantism; an effort to teach the other team a lesson. Just because they are both bush moves, doesn't mean the front office is being hypocritical though. We don't know if the Twins plan any repercussions. Yet. That being said, Ryan wasn't shy about publicly dressing down Sano. That doesn't look to be in the cards with Mientkiewicz though ripping the manager to the media is an easy way to get his players to disregard anything he teaches them.
  12. I'd like to see Sano and Rosario get promoted to Rochester for the playoff run. There aren't a lot of guys at the MLB level who have a relationship with winning baseball and I'd like these two to know what it is and like the taste of it.
  13. Yeah, it's baren down there. But's baren due to this teams incompetance when it comes to identifing capable pitching in the amature ranks. Still, it's not like the White Sox young and promising staff is made up of top 100 prospects, only Sale was highly regarded. Darnell, Dean and Hendricks should be in the rotation with Gibson along with which ever flavor of the month jounryman arm the team wants to roll the dice with this month. When healthy, Worely, Hernandez and Diamond should be in the rotation until it is made abundantly clear they cannot cut it. And boy does that make me sick typing that. To be clear, I don't like any of those guys aside from Gibson long term, but at least they'd be trying to look for solutions instead of trying to paint a slightly rosier shade of pink on an already lost season. There is absolutely zero reason to keep pitching Correia and Pelfrey, there is nothing further to gain.
  14. And it's not like the White Sox are dipping into their loaded farm system, it has been ranked near the bottom for years. Of the four young arms in their rotation, only Sale was highly regarded. The other three never sniffed a top 100 list, yet the White Sox were able to identify, acuire, coach and groom your garden variaty minor league pitchers into useful major leaguers.
  15. No, Ryan is the problem. Dozier maybe should have bunted, but when you consider that he is the second best hitter on the team right now and NOBODY is getting hits with runners in scoring postion, Gardy likely decided to roll the dice. I don't know that Gardy is right for a rebuild, but blaming him is silly, he has nothing to work with.
  16. I don't disagree at all, I was simply making the point that Gibson and Correia (who were mentioned before as capable pitchers) were in fact pitching worse than all but maybe one of the other 20 starters in the division. Though another topic of discussion probably could be: Why are there seven other starters 25 or younger on the other four division teams and every single one of them is pitching better than the Twins prized prospect Gibson? Regardelss Gibson is and shoud be in the future plans; I was actually pointing out that the White Sox had four pitchers Gibson's age in the rotation while the Twins continue to send out the vets to the detriment of the rebuild.
  17. Which of those two crack the Detroit rotation? Because to get the division crown back, the Twins will have to get back to the Tigers level. Hell, I have doubts those two crack the White Sox, Indians or Royals rotations. Wade Davis is probably the only current starter in the entire division on par with Correia and Gibson at the moment. You know how the White Sox say rebuild? With 28-year-old John Danks and four starters 25 or younger. The Twins say it with 25-year-old Kyle Gibson and four broken down or AAAA retreads that will not contribute to the future.
  18. No, he does not want to sign a crap load of players, to me it seems he wants to sign a couple of actual upgrades. I'm with him, I cannot say enough how much I detest Ryan's five-for-a-dollar free agent stratagy. Those five guys ARE blocking the youngsters, use that money on one or two actual upgrades. Doumit, Carrol, Correia and Pelfrey had absolutely no business being on a team that started out the season at this stage of a rebuild. Go big in free agency or use the prospects, no more half-measures.
  19. It looks to me like many of the HR to RF are just past the wall, which at Target Field likely means off the wall. Still it's not like he'd be trading HR for outs at TF, he'd be trading HR for 2B which is better, but not ideal. Hughes might end up being a very nice pitcher, but I agree that he is going to get overpaid due to the lack of top end pitching talent in this year's free agent class and the common knowledge that he pitches so much better away from Yankee Stadium. Also... No kidding, the Twins have historically choked against big name teams in big time markets, do they want to add another player who likely will have 'fraidy-cat syndrome every time they are in NY? The Twins seem to have to go through the Yankees every time they reach the post season, another "ace" who can't get it done in Yankee Stadium seems kind of silly.
  20. Don't worry too much about getting a little Hanson on your pole, it washes right off.
  21. Well that would surpress our initial optimism. As stated, his age and level hopefully indicates there is more promise in this arm.
  22. Also moving the suddenly reliable Morneau could help/tank the scenario. The Twins are only two games up on having the 14th pick, but also only two games up on the 4th seed. MLB has never had the issues of teams tanking like they do in the NBA, but if the "race" is this close come the last week or two of the season, people may have some questions. The arguement that teams may be tanking the last week of the season is also going to have some creedence due to the increased reliance on the draft and the draft slotting process keeping prices lower for top picks.
  23. Well to be fair, he was hurt when he was drafted. I was among those not thrilled with the pick, mostly because I was bummed about McCullers going one spot ahead of him (and would have required a large bonus) but there were plenty of other pitchers I wanted a lot more than Bard. Though he was the Twins third overall pick, not much is usually expected from that position.
  24. They could then stick Jones in RF which is a pretty big hole. The Pirates RFers are currently OPSing .654.
  25. Which is why I suggested he'd be the Twins ace pitching right handed. I think he pitches again but is no longer effective. Full disclosure though, he says his recovery has gone much better this time around.
