  1. If we agree that it would have been preferable to let Morneau finish the season instead of getting these two, why are you disagreeing with me? I've made my main point very clear, I don't want these two 27-year-olds cluttering up the already cluttered 40 man. On a different note, Morneau is hot, at this point he doesn't deserve a qualifying offer, but if his September is similar to his August, he just may. This is a deep draft class and it certainly would be nice to have another high pick. If it was a 1 in five chance, even a 1 in 10 chance that the Twins could offer and Morneau refuse a qualifying offer, I'f prefer that gamble over this return.
  2. You realize the view is the same from my position? Reason states you get what you pay for. I have reason on my side while you only have faith that Ryan can do no wrong.
  3. I've complemented Ryan on the above trades, and I am more than happy to admit that I've liked many of his moves, but yes, if the Twins are rebuilding, I think he should ALWAYS go for upside in a trade. There is no need to take a variaty of approaches. You can get the same production that the Pressleys and Welkers and Hernandez' and Escobars give you with minimal or even minor league free agents. You generally don't get upside on the free agent market unless you pay for it. And clearly Ryan won't, so get it in trades, and in trades get it exclusively. No More Filler.
  4. Pretty sure even when the Twins were winning people were pretty fed up with the Twins being cheap and I for one was not thrilled that Ryan was brought back to fix the Bill Smith disaster, I wanted new agressive blood.
  5. The odds are that they play actual MLB games as opposed to a 20-year-old in Low A is higher, but the odds they make a significant impact are slim. With how risk adverse Ryan is and seeing the Liriano and Morneau trades play out, I think we can safely say Ryan prefers guys he can plug into the MLB roster despite a lack of upside. I think a GM who was intent on getting the best talent possible would opt for the younger player even if they never panned out.
  6. So it's just a coincidence that the cheapest deal was the one that was best long term? That's an awful generous benefit of a doubt considering there is no evidence to support it but plenty of reports prior to the trade that money was the hold up.
  7. That's not the point, as expected they produced next to nothing and almost certainly will never produce any value, yet they are now more roadblocks for the real talent. They should not be on the 40-man and they should not be keeping Santana and May or Meyer or which ever other New Britain pitcher out of Rochester. They are hinderances to the rebuild just as Pressley will be. This team doesn't need more players like this. They are 27 for Pete's sake, this isn't rebuild material! Go young or go home.
  8. $2.265M is more than the slot bonus for the 16th overall pick this year. Taking Morneau out of the equation all-together, the Twins should have been able to buy a pretty good player for that sum. The Mets sent money back to Pittsburgh, why would you think money would not be a factor for Pittsburgh when dealing for Morneau?
  9. Surely I am, my three-year-old has been a terror today. It still doesn't change the fact that for the second year in a row Ryan opted for TWO low upside players who required 40-man spots. If Huntington told Ryan he had to take two guys from his 40-man, Ryan should have spoken a couple of explatives and hung up the phone letting Morneau play out the season.
  10. If it is Duke Welker as being reported I'll be pretty disappointed because offering that extra $2 million of Morneau's salary surely would have gotten an upgrade. Hopefully Welker is not the PTBNL, on tonights broadcast when asked about how the PTBNL process works Ryan said often they are dictated by how the buyer progresses in the postseason. Obviously those kind of escalators may not be in place but I'm not sure why Ryan would volunteer that inofrmation if it were not the case. Of course if those escalators are in place, we should all cheer for a Pittsburgh World Series.
  11. He's a 27-year-old career minor-league reliever with control issues. But no way can this guy be the PTBNL because surely St. Peter would have canned Ryan the second the trade was consumated. Surely no GM is incompetant enough to take on TWO AAAA roster busters in the same deal when there are a bunch of young players needing those spots and plenty of international and traditional free agents this team needs to be looking at this offseason. If true, it would have been of more value to cut Morneau and let him sign with whichever team he chooses then to try to sabotage the roster decisions this offseason.
  12. While the player may not be "hugely" better, you acknowledge he would be better. So why not pay the salary you have already agreed to pay? This is supposed to be about getting the best talent possible. And I believe it is closer to $2 million owed, so Morneau plus $2 million likely could have gotten a nice upgrade. In terms of draft picks, that's a low 1st rounder bonus money.
  13. If Smalley were to ask TR about not eating any of Morneau's salary in order to get a better return, would Roy still have a job come the top of the 4th inning?
  14. I'll retract my negative opinion if the PTBNL is a quality player as currently being advertised. Still, I'm not a fan of taking on Pressley. Way too many AAAA'ers on the 40 man as it is.
  15. Well I think the bolded statement is why most fans are upset. If negotiations came down to the wire like they did and the Twins got a DFA candidate in return, clearing payroll likely was top priority, not acquiring a player with better upside. My previous post was more negative then needed but it is frustrating. This along with the Liriano move seem much more like Chicago and Pittsburgh finding a sucker to take three non-tender's off their hands yet the Twins are more than happy wasting spots on them. I seriosly doubt Pittsburgh said take Pressley AND we'll pay Morneau's salary and that is our only offer.
  16. This reeks like the Liriano move. Why not just DFA him? In what possible way does another AAAA player taking up a 40-man roster spot help the Twins? Of course since he is Ryan's newest acquistion, he won't be considered for DFA as Ryan will need to try to prove that he knew what he was doing. No return would have been better than this return and that marks two trades that will likely do more harm than good in two years. So what would have Pittsburgh given up if the Twins had kicked in salary?
  17. I'm begining to suspect the Twins continually re-up with their Rochester affiliate only to abuse and degrade them. In all seriousness though, the Twins seemed to keep Arcia and Hicks at New Britain last year when they clearly deserved a promotion and the implication was it was to help them in their playoff quest. The Twins don't seem to have same respect for the AAA club. Must be because they sell Yankee gear in the proshop. This year the Twins take away Pinto (understandable due to a catching need at the MLB leve) but do not appear inclined to promote any of the five best and most exciting players on the New Britain team even though most if not all seem to warrent a promotion. I'd imagine Gene Glynn would be more than pleased to take Sano, Rosario, May, Meyer and Santana.
  18. Right, but a 3 year $15 million deal would have had next to no impact on the Twins financially. Their payroll flexibility is about to become obscene for a team in a brand new ballpark. The Twins already felt comfortable enough blowing that money on two guys who were much more certain to be busts in Correia and Pelfrey, neither of whom anyone would ever say had the ceiling of a #3 pitcher.
  19. As evidenced by what? I'm still waiting for positive results, not projections and speculation. I guess they also got a pretty decent return for Scott Erickson and Bobby Kielty. Yet but it would have been a tangible return. It's like buying a Powerball ticket and getting the Powerball number right. For some reason the Twins cashed the ticket out for thier 2 bucks back instead of getting a new ticket for the next drawing. Why bother playing at all if that's what you plan on doing with your asset.
  20. He ends up signing for the reduced sum of 3 years at $12 million. Blah, blah, blah 29 other clubs also passed on him but he's not worth a gamble for the Twins at say 3 years at $15 million? That's #5 starter/swingman money. Well for most teams.
  21. I suppose we will never know what was countered. Clearly we are all in agreement with the Orioles that Rodriguez was too much to ask for. Did Ryan say no to Mike Wright though? Devin Jones? Tim Berry? If talks dragged on until the end one would have to think the teams couldn't have been too far apart. Frankly, I would be pretty disappointed if the Twins passed on moving Willingham for a reasonable pitching prospect.
  22. "Early returns have the parade starting in 2015." Which early returns? Are you talking about the success of the youngsters that are supposed to help bring this team back to contention, Hicks, Arcia, Gibson and Parmelee. Something is broken and it needs to be fixed. I think it is complacency, time to clean house. Do some people deserve to get the boot? Probably not but they are supposed to be in the business of winning so if it is not clear which part is broken, why not replace it all? Your post is one long contradiction. He's only been back in charge for 21 months so we need to show patience yet you for some reason assume to know his goal, which you state is to avoid a long rebuild. How do you come to that conclusion? Especially when you are also preaching patience?
  23. Most evaluators love them some SS. The Twins likely did him a disservice by not playing him there more but Jorge Polanco may be a bubble guy.
  24. Appathy? Two years ago we would have been calling for his dismissal but we have grown accustomed to this level of incomepetence. Besides, when a business is in a nose dive, no one calls for the guy in the mail room to get canned, they lynch the CEO. Ryan and Gardenhire are the ones in the crosshairs and for good reasons. After all, Bruno didn't hire himself.
  25. I want at least two of Willingham, Doumt and/or Morneau de-cluttered from this mess of a roster but I guess I'm not for a salary dump at this time. Losing that salary is far from a promise that Ryan will re-invest it, and seriously, what could he really do with $67 million that he couldn't do with $60 million. Add another Kevin Correia I suppose. Hooray. Anyway, they can always wait unitl the offseason to move him and gamble that he finishes strong and brings back a better return. If they can't move him then, they can dump him and eat the salary.
