  1. I agree that the Rangers have screwed up with Profar, but I think their other moves were quite sound actually, having too many infielders shouldn't be an issue, they just didn't manage it very well. As far as Profar is concerned, I thought a swap of Profar or Andrus should have occured this offseason. At least a little of Profar's luster will be worn off after this season. Additionally, Profar should be a middle infielder, Dave's right, he's only a top prospect because he plays SS. Even in the minors, his offense didn't look like it would translate into anything overly exceptional. Does Ian Kinsler want to switch positions? Apparently no, but so what, it's not his decision and he's too injury prone to keep laying out for groundballs.
  2. It's been a negative Monday for me, but I want to say for the record that I do not dislike Terry Ryan or even that he is incompetent. However I feel that he is no longer a top GM and too many of his moves (and non-moves) reflect this. I don't know why we have no problems discussing upgrades to middle infielders, starting pitchers and corner outfielders but we can not do so regarding the GM. To some Ryan seems to be a sacred cow. By all rights Justin Morneau should be revered at the same or higher level than Terry Ryan in terms of organizational fondness, yet when we discuss the decline of Morneau there is not the same level of defensiveness, even when it comes to inevitable loss of our former All-Star. Is it simply because of the position? Perhaps, but I don't know why the GM would be such a flashpoint compared to a player we watch on TV everyday.
  3. I'll bet coming into the season Clete Thomas would have called you a liar if you told him he had a full-time starting job with a MLB team by the middle of June and that there would be little outlook of him losing it long past the All-Star break. I doubt I could find an emoticon to convey my thoughts on that subject.
  4. Yes, this will be at the front of any Duensing decision. I don't think they go so far as to non-tender him unless things really go south, but that figure sure would make me think the Twins would enthusiastically trade him. It shouldn't be an issue for the certainly very low payroll going forward, but it seems that this team too often is more offended by paying a player more than they deem he is worth.
  5. The ability to promote the hometown guys was surely a factor back then, but Winfield did fill a big hole after Chili Davis left and the 1996 lineup with Molitor would have actually been pretty impressive had Puckett not been lost. Knoblauch, Molitor, Puckett would have been a pretty killer top of the lineup. Still the rotation was another wish and a prayer group made up of castoffs and youngsters, some who may have promise, and others who had been given many chances but could never put it all together. Sounds familiar. Those that don't know history....
  6. It means little? Then why do the big market teams spend more if it isn't an advantage?
  7. But that's half the misunderstanding about closers. Who were the bad closers here specifically? Ron Davis 30 years ago? Did Eddie Guardado allow a ton of baserunners and make us sweat? Yes, regularly, but the results of the games would not be that much different had Mariano Rivera been pitching. I don't think the outcome of many games is actually affected by the closer. 25 pitchers have 15 or more saves. 1 has blown zero saves, 1 has blown six. Everyone else has blown a number in bewteen. There just isn't that much variance with the results when it comes to closers, it's more about opportunity.
  8. St. Peter: Good game today son. Ryan: (with tears) But dad, we lost! St. Peter: Well as long as you had fun and gave it everything you had, I'm proud of you. Ryan: Gee, thanks dad! St. Peter: Let's go get some ice cream, slugger. Ryan: Thanks dad! Ryan: Dad, why was Coach and all the other parents mad at me for throwing past the cutoff man and trying to steal third with two outs? St. Peter: Well son, some people just don't understand baseball.
  9. I understand the need for deception, and I'm actually not very appalled by such manuevers if it gives the Twins a distinct advantage. I just don't see any possible advantage in this case unless he actually thinks his job depends more on the intent of his moves and not the actual results. If St. Peter and the Pohlads in fact do only care that he "made and effort" then I guess we can shift the blame back to ownership as was mentioned above. This is a results based business, failure due to incompetence can not be accepted as a viable excuse, and trying to use it as an excuse is a monsterous red flag.
  10. I just can't see any upside to that decpetion, all it does is make him look foolish and unknowledgable.
  11. But he's not signing 2nd tier free agents, particularly on the pitching front, and he never has. The arguement absolutely is NOT confined to should they sign top tier free agents.
  12. But this is the part that affects the play and Thomas complied with this.
  13. We haven't discussed Deduno at all. It probably is silly to bring up as the guy doesn't have a ton of experience which may limit his trade value, but he has performed on big stages with the WBC championship game and shutting down the Yankees today. He isn't even arbitration eligible until 2016 and not a free agent until 2019 which is pretty nice since no one would have to be concerned with contract talks until he is in his late 30's. The controlability is a reason to keep him as well, but every time people discuss the future of the Twins rotaion, they nearly always omit him from discussion. He's probably not worth a ton, but really, is there anyone to really compare his value to? I wonder.
  14. Come on, the Twins are not infalible. You agree with everything the Twins do except if they acknowledge they made a mistake.
  15. This statement is an giant indictment on the front office. I guess even the biggest Terry Ryan appologist can't say anything nice about what he has accomplised this year.
  16. Did it sound like the game came back from commercial break and Coomer was in the middle of eating something and continued to do so through the duration of his mid-game recap?
  17. That number is generally high for most players as the better hitters are often walked with RISP and first base open.
  18. You don't need ace quality pitchers to win the WS?
  19. Yeah, I really want to make a joke about the Twins and being cautious, but I can't do it here. At least not unless we later hear his sore shoulder was due to getting a new tattoo.
  20. You need to click the splits tab just above the general stats section.
  21. His stats are all over the place. He's batting .429 with 6 RBI in 7 PA with the bases loaded. He's batting .750 with 6 RBI in 7 PA with runners on 2nd and 3rd. On the other hand he's batting .286 with runners on 1st and 3rd and .077 with runners on 1st and 2nd. Another observation is he has 78 PA with RISP, meanwhile Ryan Doumit has 103 PA with RISP despite the fact that Doumit has nearly 80 fewer PA overall than Mauer. Morneau has 104 PA with RISP despite having nealy 40 fewer overall PA. It's possible it's just a small sample size issue? 78 PA generally isn't a lot to base an arguement on, though it is a start.
  22. Why? There was really only one post that could be considered Mauer-negative? His lower success with RISP is a valid issue that certainly should be explored. Considering Mauer is among the league leaders in doubles, you'd think this number would be higher, so there may be an underlying issue. On the other hand, this figure is the percentage of baserunners, not baserunners in scoring position. Mauer is batting in the #2 hole now, the guys getting on in front of him in the #1, #9 and #8 holes are more likely to be on 1B as they are singles hitters (well hitters is a questionable word). Additionally, these batters are likely to produce outs, meaning Mauer is often up with 2 outs, rendering any chance for a sacrafice fly futile. As mentioned, Mauer is near the top of the league in doubles, the guys batting behind him have often had Mauer on 2B for them to drive in.
  23. Trade away if you ask me, but this "depth" throws a little wrinkle into the situation. The team likely wouldn't be looking to move them for another Hernandez type; there would be no room.
  24. I was thinking Colabello.
  25. Ha, I think this was unintentional, but oh very hilarious considering the recent Forbes article. Twins pay their taxes. Zing!
