  1. Good news. His walk numbers are higher than you'd like but last year they were fantastic so you have to think the ability is still there. A 46th round pick getting to AAA is pretty impressive
  2. No one thinks that command isn't important, but minimalizing the effect of velocity is the same arguement as minimalizing the effect of a higher payroll. Neither guarantee sucess but they are very strong indicators as they provide a very large advantage.
  3. Yeah, I'd like to see Willingham get a DL stint to rest that knee. He's hurting the team right now and would give the team a chance to give regular at bats to test Arcia and Parmelee.
  4. Terry Ryan, what are you doing on this site?
  5. Speaking of "soiling the bed" I'd assume if any of these guys have seen the choke job this team regularly pulls against the Yankees, neither Walters, Albers or Worley want anything to do with that start.
  6. Well he did throw all of 40 innings thus far and he's only had 48 days since his last start. Don't want to overtax that arm.
  7. When are you going to break the news to your wife that your staying?
  8. You mean rabble rabble the Yankees pitchers would have gotten that call. That complaint carries more weight around here.
  9. He's now got a career 9.0 K/9 rate. I'm happy.
  10. Agreed, my cheap shot too felt a bit harsh as the guy is now likely facing an uncertain future.
  11. So was it more like the bus scene at the end of Midnight Cowboy? Or was it Butch and Sundance?
  12. I assumed you stayed up for the same reason as the rest of us. To celebrate PJ Walters' farewell game and I assume his victory lap. This was almost as memorable as Ted Williams hitting a homer in his final plate appearance.
  13. Does another anagram for bush count?
  14. Except in the odd circumstance when Mauer is invited to compete, everyone in the HR derby is some degree of a slugger. Not sure I'd be inclined to think Sano would be automatic when Matt Kemp has a total of three HR in two derbies. Robinson Cano went from winning it in 2011 to hitting no HR in 2012. For a pretty straight-forward contest of a singular attribut, it's a pretty fluky competion.
  15. "Bases are loaded, Thomas on deck." I can't hear that enough.
  16. Perk has a better conract than Capps did as well. Though every Twins fan basically hated giving up Ramos for a closer with little track record and next to no strikeout potential. Perkins is better than Capps thus the Twins should recieve a better return than Ramos but it might be hard to find another GM as irresponsible regarding trades as Bill Smith. Edit: Lightbulb. Let's get Kevin Towers on the phone.
  17. No one is making a huge deal out of the symbolism, but choosing to personally wear something is different. Forcing a guy to stand on a podium in front of 50,000 people bearing a symbol of a reliegion he does not believe in does come off as a bit persecutorial.
  18. Or anti-gay sentiments. Religious symbols on the mound are pretty trivial so I don't much care, also consider that the Cardinals are privately owned. However I agree with Neyer, these are not the same thing. The pride flag is an attempt to right a civic injustice, regardless of what homophobes now say, there really should be no debate about whether gay people should have equal rights. The religious symbols are simply an advertisement for a specific faith.
  19. What about Hanley Rameriz instead and the Dodgers then throw in another prospect depending on what kind of money is exchanged. Not sure if I'm interested in Ramirez at this time, but I know I'm less interested in Gordon.
  20. Maybe he's on strike because he felt he deserved a promotion with Sano, Rosario and Morales.
  21. I agree, but the original premise is hard to argue with. Twins pitchers post surgery have not faired well. Perhaps our expectations for normalcy needed to be adjusted. We see so many minor, league-wide surgueries performed with little variance in reuslts and we expect the same from our guys.
  22. Flea market in Duensing's case? I'm pretty open to trading Perkins. I love having a shut down closer but I'm in the camp that they are overrated mostly because there are so many guys who can get the job done. Plenty of teams crank out unknown pitchers every year who end up being a dominant closer. San Francisco and St. Louis seem to do it yearly. Generally they only get three outs so there is very little variance to the possible outcomes of their outings. What I'm trying to say is that while we could certainly rank closers based on who is the best, their actual results aren't going to vary much. There are just so many guys who can duplicate the end results even if they aren't considered among the best closers in the league. 24 of the 30 teams have closers with 14 saves, they all are on pace for a 30+ save season. Only two of them have no blown saves and I don't think anyone would consider Edward Mujica or Grant Balfour to be the best closers in the league, while only three of them have blown five saves and no one has blown more than that number. 21 pitchers have 14 or more saves and four or fewer blown saves. The results are just too similar.
  23. I'm no pitching expert (or any kind of expert really), but from that picture, he looks to stay really tall in his delivery but he looks to have a pretty strong lower body. From a leyman's totally uneducated perspective from one still shot, it seems like he could be using his apparent strong legs to generate more force in his delivery.
  24. I remember when he was signed. It seemed like they were talking about a high 80's fastball at the time but people were pretty impressed with it considering his age. Anyone know what kind of velocity it's sitting at now? High K numbers are pretty common in the GCL, so many of the Twins draft picks from last year have come back to earth in that catagory, but hopefully the success sticks with Thorpe. I have to say I'm a little disappointed Eades went to E'ton. He was a 2nd round pick and most people said he was fairly polished. He played in a big time baseball conference where the competition is likely pretty equal to where he is now. I would understand a batter not advancing right away while they adjust to wood bats, but I don't like a college pitcher picked that high facing so many HS kids.
  25. I agree that they likely won't be willing to win the bidding war, but that doesn't mean they aren't able to. Still, as I mentioned in the previous post, making a mistake on a big signing will not harm this club as they won't be anywhere near payroll limitations. Why the hesitation about making a mistake when it's an affordable one? Besides, they can no longer throw $3 million at a Sano, there are league imposed budget limitations on nearly every international player aside from a guy in this exact situation.
