  1. Nice post. I actually just wondered in the Fire Gardy thread about getting feedback from former pitchers to find out why their K numbers decrease in a Twins uniform. I had not heard this complaint from Marquis before and had not seen Liriano's new approach analyzed.
  2. And there was more room anyway. It is just not being used. The decision on Morneau better 100% be based on 25-man roster management and not money. There is plenty of money.
  3. I too often wonder what it is that causes this. The numbers generally aren't that swayed but it's enough to see a pattern, even if minor. It's not like you can find many examples of the pitchers numbers improving with the Twins, Santana and his injury issues being an exception. Perhaps it is simply seeing a pitcher a couple times a game in the NL. It would be nice to get some interviews with the pitchers themselves to see if they can explain why this happens. PS: Add Carl Pavano and Matt Capps to your list also
  4. Then don't. It was less about bringing TR back and more about trying to cover up the massive mess that Bill Smith made. Of course as discussed many times here, Bill Smith is largely to thank for the state of the farm. Most of the international signings were his and the team only got Buxton and Stewart because they were terrible.
  5. DeVries overacheived, but Slowey and Blackburn were top 100 prospects as was Perkins as a minor league starter. I wouldn't qualify them as overacheivers, for a short while they performed as expected then regressed significantly.
  6. The lack of ambition to acquire strikeout pitchers is systematic. Anderson likely has little to be blamed for either considering the GMs of this club continue to give him nearly nothing to work with. Still, if you have bad pitchers you need someone who can coach them to mediocrity and Anderson has not done that. He's in the same boat as Gardenhire, it might not be his fault, but he's clearly not part of the solution. If you can't coach your guys to overachieve once in awhile, you're not one of the top coaches in the league. Or if you were at one point, your message has likely gone stale.
  7. Yeah, I've been in the camp that Ryan needs to go. Another GM should decided Gardy's fate though it would likely be the same.
  8. What are you talking about, everybody agrees with you, Gardy needs to resign. Perhaps you could help him with his resignation letter.
  9. Ryne Sandberg played with Kevin Tapani and his GM was Andy McPhail. He clearly has a Twins affiliation. I'd still interview him though.
  10. Must be nice to be rich. Bats don't grow on trees you know.
  11. Well does the TB dugout have internet acces? Because Baseball Reference could tell him that prior to this blow up, Pelfrey's 6th inning ERA is 15.26 and batters have a 1.177 OPS against him. Edit: Of course the dugout doesn't have internet access, they still use phones that have cords attatched to them. Still, seems like something you might research pre-game.
  12. If we must go within the organization, I'd choose Molitor too. However I would prefer an outside presence. Things are stale with this club, and it's not just because of Gardenhire. If the team won't spend on free agents, put that money into the GM position. Go buy Andrew Freidman, he only goes year-to-year with his deal in TB. Make him an offer he can't refuse. He might promote former TB front office mate Gene Glynn. That would be some continuity that some people crave.
  13. The 6th inning is to Mike Pelfrey what Ike Turner is to Tina Turner.
  14. When are these guys going to learn to stop marrying strippers?
  15. Can I count this as a call if it happened three innings too early?
  16. So barring another baserunner, Plouffe will get to try to play hero by spoiling the no hitter with 2 outs in the top of the 9th. The anticipation is killing me. Edit: Scratch that, I guess it's up to Dozier. My gamecast isn't quite up-to-date.
  17. Glynn? If they want someone from the MLB club, I suppose it would have to be Bruno or Vavra. Replacing the manager from outside the organization will cause some issues after this season. Cuellar and Bruno were looked at as solutions with the next wave of talent. If the Twins get a new manager or GM, everyone likely is gone. I want to start fresh with new faces and new ideas, but because the team will likely be reluctant to let new leaders clear out the existing leaders, we're probably stuck with more in-house options going forward.
  18. If there is such a thing as a player who needs new scenery, there certainly is the same for a manager. It would be a sad breakup, but as mentioned, this is getting stale and the tension will rot the ship from the inside out. It's not his fault, but he no longer is likely able to be part of the solution, which makes it a problem. I agree, but I wish that would start with the GM. Probably not going to get a new school manager if the GM has no interest in playing baseball in that fashion.
  19. As far as the players who made a MLB impact with the Twins: Eric Milton turned into Carlos Silva, Nick Punto and Bobby Korecky. Brian Buchanan becaume Jason Bartlet who helped to become Delmon Young, Brendon Harris and Jason Pridie. Harris was part of the Jim Hoey deal and Young became Lester Oliveros. Christian Guzman's comp pick turned into Brian Duensing. 15 years later the Twins still have Duensing on the team and Oliveros will hopefully recover and become another nice back of the bullpen option.
  20. The Cubs have an agressive president and GM. They weren't afraid to set the market for mid-tier starting pitching this past off season and by doing so, they negatively affected other teams seeking such pitchers. They also weren't afraid to be agressive in the international market, but not just with the signings. They also wheeled and dealed players and prospects for more international money even though it was a new concept and there was no precedence for the procedure and no history to help form a template of what a fair deal should look like. Our team does not have an agressive front office. They are passive and are forced to react to other teams instead of making other teams react to them. There is no place in baseball for a GM that is conservative in every aspect of the game but the Twins have one.
  21. I'd trade either of them in a losing year to give Hendriks one last extended look. Aside from Albers and Hernandez, Worley is still at Rochester and Walters cleared waivers. Logan Darnell looks like he could get a shot and perhaps Trevor May if he continues to show improved control. The options maybe do not sound pretty, but really, are Pelfrey and Correia that much prettier?
  22. It should be a pipe dream but let's not forget, this is the team that sent an even higher rated pitching prospect, Trevor Bauer, along with relievers Matt Albers and Bryan Shaw for Didi Gregorius and Tony Sipp. Additionally they sent Justin Upton packing for Martin Prado, Randall Delgado and a couple of C level prospects. The moves seem to imply they want a "gritty" team to mirror their "gritty" manager Kirk Gibson. They seem willing to trade flash for hustle. It almost seems like they want to recreate the recent glory year Twins.
  23. Had the Twins requested Ben Zobrist instead of Brendan Harris in the Garza/Bartlet/Young deal, this game would not have ended this way. The Twins should have planned for this. I saw this coming back in 2007.
  24. Now you're just stereotyping Oklahomans.
  25. I'm going to enthusiastically watch these guys as well, but I think it's wise to temper the expectations for the guys in the rookie leagues. Look no further than last year's draft class. There were about 8 pitchers putting up eye-popping K/9 numbers with strong ERA's. Most of them have come back to earth in both departments once they got to full season ball. To be fair though, the guys you are beating the drum for have all put up pretty decent BB/9 numbers, which even in rookie leagues can often be high despite other impressive numbers. It may be a good indicator that they have positive control and will succeed at higher levels.
