  1. The Cubs DFA'd Edwin Jackson. He had already been kicked out of the rotation and actually had been pitching not horrible in the bullpen. There are a lot of similarities between Jackson and Ricky Nolasco; they both received large four-year deals that were second guessed from the begining. Both had a track record of being inconsistant but more usefull than not. Both had pretty decent stuff, however for some reason it rarely manifested into strikeouts. Nolasco moving to the pen next year doesn't seem hard to vision, but will the Twins have the guts to DFA him if push comes to shove eating the 12M for 2017, the 1M option year buyout and whatever is left on his 2016 contract when the time comes? Also psych to anyone who thought this thread would suggest something as awful as picking up Edwin Jackson.
  2. First cross off any reliever who can't realistically manage an 8.0 K/9.
  3. Vogt is a 30-year old catcher playing above what logic dictates he should be doing. Almost certainly he is the catcher that Beane will be looking to deal. Beane will keep Phegley around for a couple years hoping his value increases than do the same to him.
  4. Perhaps they're stealing more, but aside from this year, in which they are losing, they have been the top, or among the top BB% team in the league each of the past fifteen years including last year when they led the league by a mile.
  5. When I think of the A's and their general desire for a strong OBP, some pop and their disregard for base stealing, Danny Santana is one of the last guys I would think of. While the athletic ability of Santana might be what is most desired by nearly every other club, if the Twins had one SS that appealed to Billy Beane, almost certainly it would be Eduardo Nunez. Of course he's not going to headline any trade of significance.
  6. I missed most of the game. My condolences to the May family. Is he dead or just injured?
  7. Ha ha, Oakland is such a dump they instead show the San Fran aerials .
  8. My hometown's greatest ball player, and still the only clean player to hit more than 60 HR in a season, Roger Maris.
  9. Yes, this doesn't sound any different than Houston last year except the round. I was probably one of the few who liked the Cody pick but those medicals must have been quite alarming despite what the club is saying. The only other reasons not to pay what it took to sign him would be they A ) are cheap or B ) made a poor evaluation on him predraft and somehow realized it soon after. I don't think A ) or B ) are likely at this point. Seems like the most logical answer is the team thought pick 74 next year was more likely to work out than Cody if Cody wasn't going to give them enough savings to get their HS targets.
  10. Considering the pitchers are worse, I'd assume MiLB catchers have to squat for more pitches per game and try to block more balls in the dirt. The Norris idea is growing on me, he's still young. I'd start by seeing if Kohl Stewart still has any trade value.
  11. I think Upton would be looking for a pretty large long-term deal. I'd be pretty upset if the Twins gave any free agent a deal of six or so years when the team may have other young players in need of extensions. And if Kirk Gibson wanted to get rid of him because he had more talent than hustle, you can be sure Ryan and company wouldn't like him. They seem cut from the same cloth.
  12. The team won't do it, but Dozier could still play SS. I always found it odd that they gave up on him on defense, but not offense. Physically he could do it, it was the mental stuff that got in the way. Same with his bat, which got fixed.
  13. So we get ready for a bunch of pitcher's duels at the MLB level in about four years?
  14. I remember, just doesn't seem that long ago.
  15. I thought it was a given when he got called up, why would you replace the back up catcher if he wasn't going to play? Suzuki can't hit, throw anyone out, or block passed balls. They must really, really like how he calls games, though with this veteran staff, I'd guess the pitchers actually have a ton of say in the pitch selections.
  16. I'm going to guess comparing Cody to whomever the Twins chose at #74 next year will provide years of spirited indignant second guessing and/or stern defenses of the selection. Should be fun.
  17. My grandfather, who I'll politely call "old school" in his race relations, surprised me when he said Satchell Paige was the greatest player he ever saw.
  18. He of the perfect OBP. Eddie Gaedel.
  19. So if the Twins have rapidly aging an sharply declining vets in Mauer anTulowitzki under large 100M+ contracts, you think they'll be likely to give more big contracts to Sano, Buxton, Berrios or whomever else may require one? Also, Tulowitzki's days at SS are numbered considering how injury prone he is. And are we really still talking about Mauer playing Catcher?
  20. I thought it was because they had rookie Austin Hedges and people assumed a losing team in a sellers market would want to get rid of the vet. Perhaps they wouldn't, Hedges wasn't very good in the minors offensively last year.
  21. HOFer "Bucketfoot" Al Simmons signed and gave my grandfather a HR ball he hit in the 1929 World Series.
  22. The Royals don't have a great offense and their starters aren't very good. They could easily tank. Of course there are so many ways the Twins could tank too. Neither team looks more than average to me. Actually, no team in the AL looks all that good. Who knows, the Twins youngsters might be able to make a difference after all this year.
  23. This may be true, but if they are too pokey about giving him innings, they'll run the risk of him still in the minors simply due to innings limitations when his options years start counting. Anyone know his velocity so far? Seems the Twins have had the unfortunate, hopefully not deliberate, situation where their young arms throw harder in college and HS than they do in the pros.
  24. I too don't believe his success is for the long haul and would't trade the more valuale propects for him. His results are dipping too. But just to play Devl's Advocate, he did have a 112 OPS+ last year in about the same number of at bats. Though that was in much fewer plate appearances because his walks are way up this year. Increasing walk rates often seem to point towards sustainability. Also his MiLB numbers look to be right inline with his MLB numbers. Also, he originally came from Tampa Bay. We complain about slow promotion rates with the Twins, but the Rays may be even slower. He had some really nice numbers his first four years but generally only got one promotion a year and looks to have missed nearly all of 2009. Instead of talking about giving up top prospects for a catcher in his age 30-35 seasons (in other words, quite possibly not a catcher for long) we can play the hindsight game and say the Twins probably should have traded cash to the Rays for the rights to a solid defensive AAA catcher who had a OPS of .774 and it was a down year.
  25. Here I thought this was going to be an appeal to try Dozier at SS again. Yeah, Dozier should be batting 3rd. He's not stealing many bases anyway, either because of a concerted philosophy change or more likely his shear number of extra-base hits. Put those XBH to work!
