  1. No, you're making an arguement against Cobb, not for Bonds. Those aren't the same thing. That's like saying politician X should be president because at least he or she is not as bad as Andrew Johnson. Also, today I'd bet there would be considerable support to retroactively ban Cobb's rotting corpse from the game.
  2. Yeah, a 32-year old with an excellent glove sounds like an mirage in today's game. A 36-year old? Eesh. Good for KC though, I'm happy for the sentimental fans, and I'm extra happy for how it ties the font offices' hands when Cain hits the market.
  3. These guys aren't being denied jobs. They had jobs that paid well, perhaps due to the subject of the unsubstantiated rumors. These guys are being denied a free plaque and a letterman's jacket with a HOF logo on it. Those giving away the free plaque [NOT TO LEAVE THESE PREMISES] and jacket get to make the rules. I just don't get the outrage. Anyone who doesn't like it can start their own Hall of Fame. Well that's probably trademarked, you might have to come up with your own name.
  4. Tyler Clippard's fastball is down to 91 MPH and his K/9 dropped two points last year. Teams are staying away from his demands for a reason.
  5. Outside of Wisconsin, going to jail and going to the HOF hopefully require different standards of proof.
  6. All the good stuff is out of stock, there are no free agents left for the pen that look like much help at all. Give Burdi, Meyer, Chargois, Rogers, Melotakis, Reed and Peterson priority seating in spring training. Go with the upside over experience; make Fein and company have to out pitch THEM, not the other way around. If the Twins can get Storen on a below-market deal that would be OK by me too. I'd prefer it best if the Twins gave him the closer gig though as then their lefty "problem" could be solved by Perkins filling that role. Plus Storen in a full season as a closer could possibly be worth a QO at the end of the year. Long shots I acknowledge, both paragraphs would likely take a philosophical change to occur.
  7. If it was my team, a four-year deal for a 32-year old would make me cringe, but the guy means more to the Royals than he would to any other team; he's got to be considered the face of the franchise. Even though they're division rivals, I'm still a bit happy the small market KC fans get to keep a fan favorite, doesn't happen often.
  8. Donald Trump the Republican on February 2nd, so sayeth my crystal ball. On a related note, about a month later Donald Trump the Independent will say Iowan's are all terrorists anyway.
  9. The Twins didn't do a rebuild, they did a little of this, a little of that. They never scrapped the vets and handed the show to the kids. They did it in the early 80's, they did it early this century, but they didn't do it this time. If you don't think rebuilds are something contending teams should do and teams that want to contend shouldn't let their young players come up and learn how to play at the MLB level, you probably shouldn't use the Royals as a comparable. And yes, I want to to watch a youth movement, the team has shown before that that is a recipe for success, as have many other clubs.
  10. I'm not sure what your comment about a 4 year rebuild is about, I wasn't giving the Twins a time frame, I was asking them to commit to the young players. The young guys shouldn't have been getting seasoned in the minors in favor of vets that would not be part of the future when the team was a complete train wreck prior to last year, the MLB IS a finishing school. Anyone who thinks rookies are going to come up as a finished product must only have watched Albert Pujols. Expecting that from these guys is insane.
  11. Arcia has too much offensive potential to never give a real shot. The guy has never been given a full season to show what he can do, and this is despite the fact that two of the past three seasons the Twins were so bad they had nothing to lose by playing young guys exclusively. This kind of thing is the biggest drawback to not committing to a rebuild. We see some star players come out of the gates and just get it, but we forget how many good players take several years of scuffling before they are ready to contribute consistently. It's important for pitchers to learn on the job at the MLB level too.
  12. So we know the new movies threw out any of the cannon that the older novelization created. I wonder if it's set fast that the future movies won't contradict the current novelization? Books can have so much more sub-text, but on the other hand, no way will they want to provide spoilers for the movies. What I'm getting at is I wonder if any of the stuff in the book that was cut in the movie may have been cut because the brain-trust didn't quite want to commit to that stuff as future movie plot points.
  13. I agree that if he didn't "break out" last year, it was simply because everyone was too preoccupied watching the rookie shortstops instead. However if someone wants to argue that Sano's production last year was nice but we ain't seen nothin' yet, well I'm not going to be too upset about that.
  14. I'm not sure if #3 and #5 are wholly compatible. Even with Nolasco's injury in 2015, the rotation stayed healthy enough to not have enough spots for the young pitchers. I don't think the team should count on injuries or performances to open up spots for Berrios, May or whomever. I'm concerned that the veteran starters will Pelfrey themselves into a season-long spot. They won't be good enough to dominate games, but they'll be acceptable enough that their veteran status will dissuade the team from giving the younger guys with upside their job.
  15. If Mauer performs as he did last year, the team really needs Arcia to produce because there really aren't any other lefties to put anywhere near the heart of the lineup and the job will default to Joe due to the dearth of left-handed production.
  16. I'm going with Lewis Thorpe. No clue at what point he'll be throwing in games again, but I hope when he does, we're all going to be saying, "Man, I forgot how damn high I was on this guy until the TJ issue!" My bet is that he's going to be a top 2 team prospect this time next year.
  17. I agree Leia's plot was lacking, but honestly I was worried that would happen with all three original leads as developing a new cast was going to take away screen time from Luke, Leia and Han. I think having Luke missing from the film was a very cleaver way for the writers to get out of trying to figure out how to give the new characters enough screen time to develop properly. Han basically got all the screen time that perhaps would normally be allotted to all three of the original leads, and sadly that won't happen again, but we can probably be sure Luke is going to fill up that void, and likely exceed it, in the next film. They need to find more for Leia next film, they'll have to be creative though as she's basically just filling Admiral Ackbar's role now.* *Anyone else want to see a spinoff about the power struggle that saw Leia end up out-ranking Ackbar? I'm picturing some kind of political thriller with lots of sexual backstabbing and double crosses. Super hot.
  18. Yes but you already know that you are already on the plus side of WAR just for showing up at SS and you have to be pretty awful to lose that advantage.
  19. I might argue two. Desmond and Escobar were pretty close to a push in 2014 as well.
  20. He doesn't appear to be better offensively either so it's hard to buy base running or "leadership" is going to put him over the top.
  21. Spot on, one guy is trending upward the other is trending downward. I will fully accept the very reasonable possibilities that both guys had a couple of fluke years in the opposite directions, but there is no way I buy that the 30-year-old Desmond is going to be enough better than Escobar and his arbitration salary the next four years to justify spending $60M on him. And honestly, this looks way, way too much like Stephen Drew to me. Four years of this guy? Please, please no; three years is too many.
  22. Yeah, all the talk about if there will be season 2's of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, the talk should probably be when is The Punisher going to get a show. That character and actor seem pretty destined to steal the show in Season 2 of DD. Also, I'm guessing Jessica Jones and Luke Cage are going to be pretty linked together by the time the defenders comes around. Perhaps they don't get a solo season but a duet if both of their stand-alones do well enough.
  23. Desmond's OPS as taken a serious nose dive each of the past four years and his power, speed and on base skills are all clearly fleeting while the already concerning strikeouts are rising. Now the rumors are that his agent is trying to sell teams on him being a super utility player ala Ben Zobrist. The only reason I can think of that an agent would try to sell teams on the idea that his shortstop client would make a good super utility player is because every team he talks to says the guy can't play SS full time anymore. I don't know how, but this guy took one great year (2012) and one really good year (2013) and somehow built the myth that he was some really exceptional ballplayer despite his other five years saying otherwise.
  24. Right, I don't think Chapman puts this team over the top in 2016, he'd make them better, but not enough to win. These moves make more sense when the Twins are regular contenders.
  25. I don't know, Wedge surviving three Star Wars movies in a minor role has to speak to some kind of powerful abilities, he should have been dead at the first Death Star. He had "Dead Extra" stamped on his head the whole time. And man, it would be considered pretty un-PC today, but the fat guy named Porkins? Awesome.
