  1. I agree, however the relief market in 2016 seems to be playing out similarly to the starter market in 2013 when Ryan exhasberatedly said on MLB network that the Twins were trying to upgrade the rotation but they couldn't get anyone to bite. At the beginning of that offseason he also said upgrading the rotation was the top priority. They seemed to over compensate in money and years for swingman Kevin Correia that year after watching starters of all skill levels get far more than expected. All I'm saying, is if the Twins can't do better than whoever the 2016 BP version of Kevin Correia is, go with the kids. I don't want a vet just because he's a vet.
  2. The problem with this swap as I see it, is Shields would be guaranteed a rotation spot, Nolasco likely not. So the question really is not is Shields an upgrade to Nolasco, it's is Shields an upgrade over May, Duffey or Berrios? At this point? Likely yes. By mid season? Tough call. In three years? I have no desire to see a 35-year-old in the rotation.
  3. The pen clearly needs to be fixed, and I'm sure Ryan was forthright when he said fixing it was a top priority. However I also wouldn't be surprised if Ryan is currently surprised and frustrated by the sudden cost in dollars, years and prospects bullpen help is going for currently. I would bet the front office didn't expect the free agent/trade market to play out this wildly. The market is already pretty picked through, I am beginning to become significantly concerned that the Twins will end up over compensating and getting a third or fourth tier reliever who will do little to fix the deficient strikeout problem, but give up prospects or committed years well beyond reason for such a pitcher. I want a serious BP overhaul, but if the Twins can't get a couple of the remaining few true upgrades, I'd just as well prefer to see the fireballing minor leaguers get the job regardless of spring training performance. However with that the fear is that the Twins traditional comfort level for pitchers has always been based on experince, and we'll still see guys like Fien in high leverage situations even if a strikeout artist like Chargois, Burdi or Meyer are also in the pen.
  4. Which report and which scale are we basing this 270 lb weight assessment? I see him listed at 260 at BBR and the Twins official site, maybe it's just me, but round numbers don't generally strike me as either accurate or current. Fangraphs lists his weight as 195. Just saying 270 possibly sounds like a number a detractor might use to sway opinion. For the record, I'd prefer Sano at 3B as his bat will stand out. I recognize that Plouffe is an above average all round player, but he's a veteran and seems to be viewed as a middle of the order cornerstone, however his poor on base skills should have him batting 7th maybe 8th. I think his comfortable presence will continue to tempt Molitor to bat him much higher. I think the inability of the middle of the order to regularly get on base was/is overlooked as the offenses biggest weakness last year.
  5. I picked the team to finish third, though the record could be similar. With no negativity intended, I think this team needs to fix the strikeout problem from both the pitchers and the offense before they can get over the hump. Mostly the pitchers.
  6. I have no problem with pot, but I also don't have an issue saying the usage of it by a professional ball player is a mark on his character or make up. If a guy knows the consequences of his actions are going to hurt his team yet does it anyway, that's a big problem. It's not a stupid, it's purely selfish. Not that it's not reconcilable. No different than if eating carrots suddenly became illegal.
  7. I'd rather sign Chris Young to a cheap 1-2 year deal. The 4th OF really is only needed to hit lefties and Young does that well.
  8. With the recent losses of Scherzer and Price (and in all but name Verlander) count me thrilled that the Tigers are now building around mid-to-low strikeout contact arms Norris and Zimmerman. This new look Detroit rotation looks pretty unthreatening to me.
  9. Zimmerman will be 30, moving to the AL and already has a middling K rate with a sizable drop off from 2014. He'll never be a guy who when I see the Twins are facing him, I'll think they have a tough night ahead of them. I know plenty of folks around here like this guy, but I'm thrilled Detroit got him; he looks like another albatross around Detroit's neck to me.
  10. Good, the Tigers can have him. Switching out Scherzer and Price for high contact pitchers Norris and Zimmerman sounds great to me. They can go right ahead and build their rotation with a bunch of #3s. It's a welcome change.
  11. I'm not too concerned about this contract, even if he busts. It's a lot easier to hide/mitigate an offensive bust than it is a pitcher. Not that I think he'll bust.
  12. Odd choice for their next Twins reclamation pitcher.
  13. Yeah I have to say those numbers only make me cautious of Meada, not regret Johnson.
  14. So Heyman and Rosenthal are Tweeting (which is not anything close to the same as reporting) that the Padres are talking to and looking at free agent Japanese 3B Nobuhiro Matsuda.
  15. Good write up. I certainly didn't need convincing that this team needs to get and stay young. I hope those in charge of putting the rotation together keep it in mind too.
  16. With no slight to Buxton, I don't know if any top prospect alone ever would have been enough to snag three years of control from a 23-year-old legit ace. Ever. Baseball people tend to like proven commodities while fans put a ton of weight in projection. And I'm not saying the fans are necessarily wrong, but that's just how it is.
  17. Well considering it's basically the exact opposite approach of the World Series champs, you're right, it might get undervalued as teams tend to copycat. I was all for being a copycat at least in terms of high OBP/low strikeouts, but the Twins are way too deep into the heavy power/heavy strikeouts now, I think it's too late to go back, might as well give the classic Earl Weaver approach a shot first.
  18. I don't think a "bidding war" and "significant interest" are necessarily symbiotic. Plouffe's contract is still very team friendly and while he's a perfectly fine ball player, his numbers aren't eye-popping. He sounds like the kind of guy most GMs would look at and think, he's worth talking about since there's a good chance he won't cost the farm. Anyone with a 3B need but doesn't want to pay top dollar and/or give up top prospects would probably at least call and check in.
  19. I was under the impression that more than power, Moneyball prioritized OBP, and the Twins just traded Aaron Hicks. I guess it's still TBD, but getting rid of Rosario, Plouffe, Arcia and Suzuki would make more Moneyball sense (cents) it would seem to me.
  20. I hadn't heard about this. Glad we didn't lose another of our team's icons. If he hasn't yet, here's hoping to a full recovery.
  21. Didn't Ryan, Gardy or someone else say that Gardy was offered a Twins front office job after his dismissal but he instead wanted to try to find another managerial gig? So is the Twins offer off the table, or is Gardy not interested?
  22. We must not have been watching the same games the Hughes started.
  23. I think it's most likely that the team considers Murphy the solution and the search is over. However, I have been wondering, did the Twins ever have the formal "announcement" of this trade? I ask because the Twins haven't usually been shy about press conferences and big announcements. I really have no reason to believe it, but it has crossed my mind more than once that perhaps the Twins are interested in a bigger name veteran catcher but the current owner of said catcher is requiring a younger replacement in return and Murphy is just that guy. Stupid thought, but keeps popping up.
  24. AL teams should have had priority over the NL teams when it came to claiming Pinto.
  25. I think I would have protected Michael, Jones and Pinto over O'Rourke, Dean and Landa, but if the Twins needed to rely on any of these guys in the next two years, something went wrong. I agree that Jorge likely doesn't get claimed as a low 90's starter in A ball isn't too attractive on paper, but I think some team could fix that if they're ambitious and have a roster spot to kill. This guy has the weakest delivery I've seen outside of a knuckleballer. The guy basically has a high leg kick and plants it right back where he picked it up from. He doesn't step to the plate at all, he throws with all shoulder and looks like he's trying to step on an egg without crushing it. I'd love to see what he does if he didn't throw like a dead-ball era pitcher playing catch with a toddler in the back yard.
