  1. Two years for Plouffe, one for Storen. Let's make it fun and add some other pieces from both sides.
  2. Cards get Jon Broxton for two years at 7.5$M. I would have topped that. He was really good after going to St. Louis and I think his value was bogged down by a crazy undeserved ERA in Milwaukee. I think he's back and going to be a steal.
  3. The circumstances are a bit unique with him, but the price of relievers has been very high. He should be cheaper than Kimbrel and Giles due to him being a rental, but that makes me want him less, as I still don't think this team is ready to make a run. However, we know the Twins don't leak rumors meaning this likely came from either the Nats or Storen. Could mean someone's desperate.
  4. Winter leagues are fun to follow and can provide some benefits, but I don't want my star players there. Sorry if my desire for localized baby sitting borders on paranoia, but a lot is riding on these guys making healthy, safe and sane decisions. Maybe I'm just a jerk, but I'm never sure if those in charge of these young men are most concerned about their MLB careers. Better the DR than Venezuela though I guess.
  5. Any chance our reaction to this is in any small part due to the inaction and thus dearth of things to discuss during these Winter Meetings?
  6. 894. You're forgetting that we have come to the consensus that Jones was better than Fien and Dean.
  7. I disagreed with exposing Jones and keeping Dean, but if the Twins are bad at this, the Yankees and Rays must be twice as terrible as they lost two players each.
  8. I agree. Of course on the other hand, if the historically awful at catcher Mariners are cutting bait on a guy..... I would have rather had Jones than Fein or Dean, but I'd also rather see Burdi, Chargois, Meyer and maybe even Brandon Peterson before Jones. Also, he was Milwaukee's 2nd pick and there's no way even the awful Brewers are carrying two Rule 5 guys all year. I like Jones chances to stick better than a 1B, as relievers have been much easier to hide, but I'd think the chances that he's truley gone are no higher than 70%.
  9. OK so Berardino says Ryan wants a lefty who can go multiple innings and isn't a LOOGY: https://twitter.com/MikeBerardino/status/674746319647428608 And Bollinger says that the Twins are looking for a lefty who can strike out guys: http://m.twins.mlb.com/news/article/159186212/twins-zero-in-on-relief-at-winter-meetings Aren't lefties who can go more than one inning and miss bats pretty exclusively starters? And good ones at that? Either way, whoever this guy is, he sounds expensive and I'd rather pay Sipp or Bastardo than give up what sounds like would be costly prospects considering we're talking about a reliever.
  10. I'm not big on the idea of Nolasco taking a spot of a younger player in the rotation or the pen just to build up trade value. If Pelfrey couldn't build any trade value during his surprising season last year, I doubt Nolasco and his worse contract could.
  11. Triple check it La Velle. Unless he's looking to trade, there should be no other targets. I would rather the team give the job to Taylor Rogers sight-unseen than any of the other LH free agents. My money is on junkballer Joe Thatcher who miraculously is able to miss bats with an 84 MPH heater yet still managed a 4.8 BB/9 last year. Either way, before we find out who gets signed, let's collectively take a deep breath and remember that sarcasm doesn't do anyone any good. Let's express our disappointment civilly!
  12. I don't know if it will get better or not, but he's kind of worked himself off of my radar. The Twins have future options for utility guys so Santana, even if he picks up his offensive game, doesn't seem like a long-term fit to me. I'm all for letting him keep his, um, "versatility" and roll the dice that his bat picks back up. A young guy who can hit and can be squeezed into both SS and CF has got to be attractive to another team or two. Like catcher, it seems to me that anyone that can put an SS behind their name gets bonus points, even if the SS is written in pencil.
  13. How about if there is a second arbitration process, but for "grievance" type players. Players that have demonstrated enough success in the minors where they probably deserve a shot at MLB money. The process could influence their paycheck while their service time remains unchanged. This would of course be in addition to paying minor leaguers a fair salary which aside from the owners, appears to be universally agreed needs to happen.
  14. Perhaps that could be Neil Allen influenced.
  15. Right, the Dodgers (appear) to have a competent front office. AZ on the other hand.... I can't believe Tony LaRussa would let these kinds of moves happen under his nose.
  16. If the Twins use Davis as a platoon player, he'd be useful. I still prefer Chris Young (and Ryan Raburn if Buxton starts the year in CF and the Twins instead have Rosario as the back up CF) but Davis can hit lefties. None of these guys should be used against righties though, so I really hope this interest means the Twins plan on embracing who ever their free agent right handed OF is as a bench/platoon guy. It would be smart baseball as Rosario, Arcia and Kepler could all use a right handed complement.
  17. Worst case is that Shields comes here, is ineffective but still gets two years in the rotation, trumping the prospects due to his contract/name. Nolasco has already worn out any overriding allowances that come with his contract/name and will likely not be a roadblock for the younger talent.
  18. Well reports are that to get him, the Dodgers were being required to give up Seagar, Urias, Pederson plus two more prospects, so that Twins package might be light.
  19. Good callbacks. It's not entirely out of the realm of possibilities that I mis-remember or bought into felonious draft hype regarding his fastball. I like the previous mentions of his power slider, but this summer I was under the impression from our posters in the know (I believe you are among them) that his slider was actually poor and it did not look like it was improving, meanwhile his fastball generally sat 92-93.
  20. I understand not calling Stewart a bust even though his strikeout numbers are pointing toward one. However the fact that he was billed as a guy with high 90's heat and now (or perhaps always?) sits in the low to mid-90's is a pretty big concern to me. Guys don't add velocity as they age which kind of tells me that we did not really receive what was being billed. If at draft time we knew that the 98 MPH heater and wipeout slider were actually a 93 MPH fastball and perhaps no usable slider, would any of us really wanted him picked at #4? I don't think it's that much of a stretch to say he's at least on the cusp of being a bust. Absent a pretty unprecedented increase in velocity and the addition of an out-pitch breaking ball, I don't see what kind of factors are available to make him the kind of pitcher that this team needs.
  21. This was part of the CBA. I don't know why the Cubs can't flat out say, "Yeah, we held him down for two weeks so we could have him for six years instead of five." I mean seriously, is there really a gripe with the tactic? It may not seem fair to the player, but it's the agreed upon method and is certainly best for the fans. The Cubs are lucky, they could keep a Scott Boras client after five years of super-star level play. What if was on the Twins? It's be five years and out without a doubt. If they want to change the system, why not have the service time cutoff be more inline with the end of the year. That's when playoff teams need to have their best players up AND bad teams want to evaluate what they have in their young players.
  22. I like Gray, and if he was a Twin, I'd value him unreasonably high, but he's still too much like the rest of the rotation. This team needs to find strikeout pitchers, Gray isn't one of those. Like most Twins, he doesn't throw his breaking pitches enough. The Twins need a different kind of pitcher, not a better version of what they already have. If the Twins had a team made up of Denard Spans and Ben Reveres up and down the lineup, Rickey Henderson sure would look like a nice upgrade, but he still has the same skill sets and wouldn't make any sense for that team.
  23. If Jason Motte and Chad Qualls can get two year deals, it basically signals the end of any kind of reasonable deal for the remaining arms. I'm not against unreasonable pay although I am against unreasonable years. I'll take Sipp or Bastardo, but I don't think there are any RH relief free agents left that I really care to offer more than a 1 year rebound deal to like Axford, Rodney or Broxton.
  24. The legit relief options are shrinking fast. If plan A was to improve with top and 2nd tier arms through free agency/trade but they just weren't able to get it done, I really hope plan B is throwing the kids into the fire and not (re)signing the likes of Boyer, Cotts or their free agent contemporaries.
  25. Nope, but Shawn Kelley is now gone as well; the quality options are dwindling quite fast.
