  1. I see nothing special there and certainly nothing that can't be reached by anyone with even a modest ceiling, the first of which was an even more obscure Yankee backup catcher 12 months ago.
  2. If you want to say 26 teams don't have boring catchers, fine, it's pretty subjective, but Salvador Perez is not that good offensively. If you have to add the caveat "for a catcher" to describe a guy, I'd say he's closer to boring than a super star. As in, he's a pretty good hitter... for a catcher.
  3. I'll trade a measly .25 OPS for six years of team control every time. Besides, if that's the stratification we are using to measure catchers, it just goes to show how blasé the position is these days. I don't think much of Murphy, yet his ceiling can't possibly be lower than what every catcher did last year aside from Posey. Catchers just aren't that good these days. 29 teams have boring catchers, let's concentrate on something else instead of dwelling on something that can't be fixed.
  4. I've never been a front office supporter, yet this rashness compelle me to point out that Ryan is now being criticized for being the most aggressive GM in baseball right now. This move does not preclude him from getting an IMPACT catcher later. What likely does preclude him from adding an IMPACT catcher is the fact that there is only one of those on the planet at this time.
  5. I think trading Hicks makes the prospect of re-signing Robinson even less likely. My money is on an unsexy but useful RH free agent on a 1-2 year deal. Robinson doesn't hit enough to be a regular, and as much as I have disagreed with Ryan's moves in the past, his work so far this off season has been about upgrading the offense. Three moves already in November? We are on pace for a lot of activity this winter.
  6. Is Hicks more than a mediocre player? What happens if Ryan now goes out and finds a better hitting OF than Hicks? It seems a bit unfair that you liked the first two moves, but when the third wasn't also to your liking everything gets tossed out the window.
  7. For a month until Buxton and/or Kepler come up? Big deal. And Robinson is a free agent. Reports of the Twins interest in bringing him back probably will need to be re-evaluated now that the OF situation is back to uncertainty. With how aggressive Ryan has been the offseason, I highly doubt he's going to look at Shane Robinson and think, yeah, I'll settle for that guy in November.
  8. Sure, but what about a RF. I'm of the opinion that if a guy can't nail down the catcher position at 22, he almost certainly won't when he's 25. Rare is it that players graduate to a more difficult position, it's almost always the opposite. If the Twins would be OK with the defense, they'd probably give Pinto another shot.
  9. I wonder about the timing the the Hicks and Herrmann trades now. The Twins almost certainly knew they were getting Murphy when they traded Herrmann yesterday, hindsight makes it pretty easy to deduce that the Twins didn't first get rid of their back up catcher and THEN go searching for a new catcher. So why was this one announced last? It seems that either the Twins didn't want AZ to know that Chris Herrmann was about to become expendable, or the Yankees gave the Twins a take-it-or-leave-it offer and told Ryan he could think on it. I also wonder if Ryan asked for Gary Sanchez and was told no, or if Ryan actually valued Murphy's MLB experience (or some other factor) more and he was the preferred target?
  10. All I know is that guys who go by three names seem to have a high tendency of becoming serial killers.
  11. Also, as Nick mentioned in his OP, this move likely means the Yankees don't re-sign Chris Young. If the Twins go after him instead of Robinson and make him the 4th/platoon guy, I'll love this move. He hits lefties better than Hicks does. Better than nearly everyone actually. And sorry to repeat myself with the Chris Young-as-a-bench-bat love. I can't remember which threads I've been in.
  12. This trade only excites me in that I think other guys with better offensive upside will get more at bats with Hicks out of the way, but that 85 RC+ doesn't bother me. I am wholly unimpressed with this generation of catchers. Only 12 catchers with at least 400 PA had an RC+ of 85 last year. Only 8 were over 100. It's not like there were any great upgrades available unless the Giants were dangling Buster Posey.
  13. I think the Twins got the short end of this deal, but we shouldn't be comparing Hicks to Murphy, we should be comparing Hicks to whoever gets his at bats. The removal of Hicks will probably mean more at bats for Park, Arcia; Kepler and/or Vargas. It doesn't seem too out of reach for those guys to top Hicks' offensive production. No one has to "win" a trade for it to be a good move.
  14. It does seem like a win for the Yankees. If Hicks is a better player, the Twins probably have to silver line this thing with the idea that it's not Hicks vs Murphy, but Hicks vs whoever is getting the extra at bats that Hicks would have gotten. In this case Park? Kepler? Arcia? Vargas?
  15. They need a righty who can hit left handed pitching as Rosario, Arcia and Kepler are in the mix. Whoever is the RH OF bench bat will get a lot of playing time and Robinson isn't cut out for a lot of playing time. Chris Young or Ryan Raburn would be better options in my book. Looking at the splits, Robinson actually hits RHP better than LHP anyway. Not that he hits them very well.
  16. I would have preferred adding some extra pieces to try to get a better young catcher, but this guy's small sample sizes really makes it hard to judge him. I don't think Hicks' offense was ever going to be strong enough to satisfy us at a corner OF spot, so I think this is move is really going to come down to whether Buxton develops or not. Also, half of Hicks' problems seemed to be due to not adjusting to pressure well. Um, good luck in NY. Second also, let's not forget how shocked we would have been last year if someone told us that Hicks would ever have any value.
  17. I think the Cubs are toward the end of the "draft and develop" stage of their rebuild.. They have money to spend, if they want another starter, they're going to get a big time free agent, not speculate on another prospect. I'd also think that if the Twins would be OK making Schwarber a full-time catcher, they would have at least given Pinto another shot. They didn't, so I'd think the Twins are probably after a more traditional catcher.
  18. I'm not worried about Kepler, and I'm not too concerned about the logjam. My biggest complaint (and biggest is relative as it's rather small) is that in the terrible 2014 season, my favorite part of the whole season was watching Arcia, Vargas and Santana pumped up and excited on the top step of the dugout every game, even when the team was getting pounded. Arcia and Vargas are looking cooked due to the roster situation at this time, I liked their potential, but I really liked the dynamic. I really did want to see Arcia get one more chance at full-time work, even if he did behave like a drunk frat boy 80% of the time.
  19. I'm all for a winter trade, but I agree that it's quite likely the Twins do to the offense in 2016 what they did to the rotation in 2015; bring everyone to camp and see how things shake out, with the veterans getting priority seating. The most difficult thing about this scenario is that very few trades happen early in the year, so if there is a log jam, the Twins may have to wait until July to make a deal which could cause several roster problems. I say this, but I also believe that the Twins will be more than willing to listen to offers for catchers and relievers if there is a deal they just cannot refuse.
  20. I wouldn't be against Soria but that strikeout rate is starting to fall and he's only got a low 90's fastball. I think this is the year the Twins finally get in on the strikeout bandwagon and they sign some guys with strong swing and miss stuff.
  21. I like Storen, but he'd only be a rental, and I'm not sure I want to give up a decent prospect for a rental. While relievers may be more expensive than normal, that's all pretty relative; these are still largely the cheapest kinds of free agents. You can still probably get three really nice relief arms for under $12M/year combined.
  22. I want Mark Lowe. There is absolutely no buzz going on around this guy despite having a fantastic season. I think whoever gets him is getting a steal. Also add Shawn Kelley, and the bullpen would be looking a lot stronger. I'd also give a shot to Jon Broxton as at the end of the year it looked like he had finally regained his form. Ryan Madson might be a good pickup as well.
  23. Can was among the HS arms I was really hoping the Twins would draft instead of Wimmers. Still, I agree, no way can that be the centerpiece. I'll trade for relievers, but they are the cheapest position to fix through free agency.
  24. If we're trading Hermann, it almost certainly means the team is pretty intent on addressing catcher this offseason. Clearing the 40-man from these ever-tempting type of players seems like a win itself.
  25. What am I missing, this looks way too good to be true? Hopefully this is just another in a recent string of moves that proves that AZ will always be on the wrong end of all trades.
