  1. I agree, other than the fact that he wasn't mentally capable, the only reason I can think of that he wouldn't say the cops fed him those details was because then perhaps the videotaped interview may need to be played, and if I recall, both the prosecution and the defense agreed not to show it for some reason.
  2. But does that mean a longer film? Or less screen time for Luke and the villains? Not that either option is necessarily wrong.
  3. I would like your post out of commiseration but I didn't want to send the wrong message.
  4. You're probably right. I'm just hoping for the days when electing a George Bush Sr, Bob Dole or John McCain (the original, not the post Bush era version) didn't seem like it would risk re-setting socio-economic issues back 50 years. Those guys weren't radicals, and they were pretty recently relevant. Heck, they are all still alive in fact.
  5. Bob Dole is now going after Cruz. Seems the party has now decided that Cruz is more dangerous than Trump, as Trump is a sideshow but if Cruz starts winning the primaries, he's going to continue with his lunacy well beyond 2016. http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/20/politics/bob-dole-ted-cruz-donald-trump/index.html "One leading GOP strategist involved in the effort put it this way: "If Trump loses we wash our hands of him. Cruz will think we need to be more crazy and be a long-term nightmare." That's an unnamed GOP strategist, not the other side of the aisle. I'm glad to hear that, at least it sounds like the level heads of the party know they can't go nuclear on social issues and still hope to be relevant again. Someone's making an effort in there to coral the Tea Party damage and bring the party back to within shouting distance of the middle.
  6. That rotation is becoming very underwhelming. It used to be a group of fireballers that would make the batters walk back to the bench with bat in hand a dozen times a game. Adding Norris, Zimmerman and Pelfrey promises those days are gone. Verlander's 95-97 MPH heater is gone and because of this, his once killer changeup is also done and rarely used last year. Cabrera had a history of playing hurt and still playing well. That ended last year as he finally missed significant time due to injury. He's still a great hitter but his power is fading, we've been saying he's a time bomb for years, one of these years it's going to be true. I think they're trying to patch a sinking ship. Good for them, they haven't given up, but it looks to me like they are just drawing out the inevitable.
  7. Perhaps not, but the odds keep improving with fewer 30-year-olds vets on the roster. And I'd rather see these guys in May and June than September.
  8. Right, these guys weren't Antonio Bastardo or Tyler Clippard. They're Burdi, Chargois, and I don't know, Milone would be the Davis comp I guess? Not in ability but in the method of acquisition.
  9. How do you figure the Royals strategy is different? Holland, Herrera and Davis as a reliever were all unknown commodities when they got inserted into their rolls. The reward for rolling the dice is much higher than the reward for hedging their bets. Even if the roll of the dice doesn't pan out, the consequences aren't that great unless someone actually thinks the difference between Bastardo and Abad/Rogers/Melotakis is the difference between making or missing a playoff spot. I don't think Bastardo in any way puts the team over the top.
  10. Maybe a few games in 2016, but not in the long run. I also don't think there's a huge difference between a guy like Bastardo and a guy like Abad. Not enough to make much of a difference in the standings anyway.
  11. The Twins had been quite walk-a-phobic, and most teams are/were. But Ryan recently was quoted saying he didn't think walks for a reliever were overly worrisome and Jack Goin extrapolated on that thought in the other Bastardo thread supporting the idea that guys who miss bats can much easier afford a higher walk rate. Whether other folks agree or disagree about the actual damage a walk does, based on Ryan's quote and Jack's explanation, I really hope walks aren't the major sticking point for calling these guys up. I want to see Sano, Buxton and Kepler this year, but seeing multiple guys under 25-years-old in the bullpen throwing in the high 90's really gets me excited, and it's starting to look like it might actually happen. I know I'm in the minority, but I'm going to enjoy watching these guys way more than some free agent.
  12. The only major non-Republican support Trump is getting is from apolitical individuals.I don't mean Independant voters, I mean folks that don't follow politics but enjoy being part of pop-culture and discussing reality shows. Those folks don't actually make it out to vote.
  13. I like Mark Lowe and think he was the best free agent relief steal this offseason. But I'm ready for the Twins to finally put their money where their mouth is, and their mouth has rarely been at the free agent make-out party. They've been slobbering all over hard throwing relief pitchers in the draft for a half decade and it's time to put up or shut up. They've already likely committed spots to low upside guys by tendering Fien a contract and having to make room for a vet like Nolasco. If the young guys fail, than go nuts, do the free agent bit, and the team then needs to admit they haven't done well enough scouting and/or developing and internal changes should be made. However it's well past time, no more screwing around, you can't continue to value, hoard and protect young pitchers and be too scared to let them prove themselves at the MLB level. We need to see what these guys can do, but they'll do jack squat if they're getting bumped by some 30-year old
  14. The Mets are in the NL, the only league he's ever played in, on the East Coast and just went to the WS. I'm not saying he wouldn't have come to the Twins, but if he was at all willing, it wouldn't have been for 2/$12M. We don't know what it would have cost the Twins, but it almost certainly would have been more. I'm not saying the Twins couldn't afford what ever the price was, but we shouldn't pretend it was the same as the Mets.
  15. Which I see as a bit of a problem. Burdi and company should be replacing the low ceiling vets like Fien and Nolasco, not the other young guys who at least have some potential like Tonkin.
  16. Bobby had over 750 PA with the Twins, his prospect days were in his past. I'd guess no, Ryan has never traded a Twins top 10 prospect. But, developing homegrown talent was pretty exclusively the name of the game in Minnesota until 2010 at which point the team quickly jumped into the gutter, a time where trading prospects would have been the worst move possible.
  17. Specializing in youth sports is bad, but I'm not sure what youth leagues you have in your area, but from what I can tell, if the pitchers are good hitters, they are going to hit. Even in the youth leagues where there is a DH option, coaches aren't going to leave their best hitter on the bench just because he's a pitcher. Many of the guys who can both pitch and hit don't have to make that choice until they are drafted by a MLB team, perhaps some colleges expect specialization, but not all, and certainly, we see tons of HS kids drafted where the talk is whether they will start their professional career as a hitter or a pitcher. Both Byron Buxton and Aaron Hicks fall into this category. Which brings up the matter that even in the AL, the DH is still optional. If a pitcher can hit, or strategy calls for it, the pitcher can hit. This is not an option that is off the table, simply there is an incentive in place to put your best team on the field. Not taking that option is generally doing a disservice to your team and your fans, but it is an option.
  18. No I just re-read the article and saw lightening rods sticking up throughout the interview. Looks like Jack's got you whipped into shape anyway!
  19. Do any of Sweeney, Benson or Matroianni have opt outs if they aren't called up by xx/xx/xxxx? Because the AAA situation has potential to be a problem. If Buxton isn't ready for opening day, the AAA OF absolutely should be Buxton, Kepler and Walker, but I have a hard time seeing the team sitting multiple vets like Sweeney, Benson and Mastroianni on the bench for long stretches at a time. I have to think at minimum, one of the three vets will have to be released by opening day, and if they aren't looking at a lot of bench time in AAA, it may be something that the vets request.
  20. Just a preemptive reminder, let's please not derail this thread going crazy on that old interview. I think it's quite safe to assume that if we as fans have a better grasp and more knowledge of baseball statistical analysis than we did a half decade ago, Rob Anthony surely does as well. Edit: I'm not implying anyone has done anything wrong here.
  21. Fun to watch if you're team is out on the field.
  22. Tony O was at the Fargo Winter Caravan yesterday, I was planning to go and I was going to ask him if he was aware of this player and if so, can he pretty please push Ryan into doing what it takes to get him. Unfortunately the repairman who came to fix the dryer took way too long and I missed the event. So sorry everyone, I'll take full responsibility if we don't get this guy signed. Wait, I mean the dryer repairman will need to take responsibility if we don't get him.
  23. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think he recanted until AFTER the prosecution decided that this interviews and confession were so bat#@*% illogical that they could never try to use it against Avery. Pressured by his shady public attorney, it looked like the kid was ready to roll on his uncle until the DA decided his contradictions would likely work in Avery's favor. But after the DA held his press conference stating as fact Dassey's gory but unlikely details about the crime, it's not like they could let the kid walk without admitting that the gory details were largely fabricated, which would have hugely hurt their case against Avery. So they had to prosecute Dassey or risk looking like frauds regarding Avery. At that point I think Dassey recanted. Side note: The kid took the stand in his own defense, and the prosecution kept asking him why he said the things he did if he didn't actually do them. That poor kid was so mentally deficient that he didn't realize all he had to say was, "The detectives told me to say that and said I wouldn't be in trouble if I did."
  24. Upton is a guy that would excite and terrify me at the same time. I always dislike un-attributed comments about a guys poor dedication or work ethic but those things certainly dog Upton. If they were true, and I'm not claiming they are, you'd think those issues would really take hold after a guy got his big contract. And now that he's a Tiger, I totally hope they're true. As far as his production goes, his OBP has been dropping for a few years and Detroit has a tendency to sap some power. I see some pretty good bust potential here. Cespedes seemed like a much better fit to me, unlike many players, his power didn't seem diminished, and he's a better fielder.
  25. ***Moderators Note*** A moderator's note seems utterly pointless as I can't believe that anyone who's posted here the past hour didn't already know they crossed the line whether it was trolling, personal attacks or calling out other posters for violations within the threads. I'm confident we can discuss something as benign as the DH with much less antagonism and fury.
