  1. Ha, yes, particularly Rickey. There may not have been a more self-absorbed player in the history of the game. My favorite Rickey story is a tie between: The time he asked John Olerud why he wore a helmet on the field while they were teammates with the Mets. After Olerud told him why, Rickey responded that he'd played with another guy with the Blue Jays who had the same condition. At that point Olerud told Rickey they had been teammates with the Blue Jays too. and The time a teammate told him that Tom Robson had been fired. Rickey asked who that was and was informed that it was his hitting coach. And I use the phrase "favorite" Rickey stories on purpose. He has a hundred baffling and insane stories which I find utterly awesome, yet I would struggle to be anything other than annoyed if these occurred with a young ballplayer. It's not fair and I acknowledge the hypocrisy. And really, I'm not that old, just old enough that Rickey was a guy from my youth, Harper isn't.
  2. I think it's a generational thing. It took me a couple days to even read the article, and honestly with no offense to our quality young posters, I didn't give two craps about 23-year-old baseball celebrity Bryce Harper's thoughts about baseball or the world. And that's not fair. I mean I shouldn't have to give two craps, but I should respect that fact that he has views. Talking about showboating and tacking it to the younger generation is also foolish. Whether it actually happened or not, Babe Ruth was immortalized for calling his shot in the World Series. Good Lord, think of the outrage if Harper did that now.
  3. David Laurita had a simple Q&A with May. They didn't dive into stats or open any dirty little secrets, but it's nice insight into May's methods. He also drops the name of our favorite statistician Jack Goin and the use of Statcast data. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/trevor-may-on-his-cerebral-approach-to-pitching/
  4. I agree with many of Bernie's ideas, but I've been critical of the pride conservatives lately take in "stubbornness" and being "uncompromising", I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't recognize these same negative attributes in a guy I like.
  5. The Twins did seem to deal with this last year with Pelfrey, who only got his starting spot because of the Santana suspension. Pelfrey took the job and was OK last year which is exactly what I'm worried about here. I don't want a just "OK" Nolasco taking away a spot from a young guy with more promise. Still, the positive take is that Ryan didn't appear to be swayed by Pelfrey grousing, he was all but inked into the bullpen prior to the suspension. And that wasn't the first time that happened. In 2011 Kevin Slowey made a big stink about the idea of going to the pen. At that time, Slowey's complaints also had no effect and he too was banished to the pen. Of course in this case Slowey appeared to have been bumped because the Twins still wanted to get their money out of Nick Blackburn despite his historically awful 2010 season. I don't know. The money likely is a factor, but I also have a strong sense that Ryan does not like to be told what to do by someone who's not paying his salary. I half suspect an implied ultimatum like this might be counter-effective. Ryan's not going to like the perception, even if unfounded, that the players can turn the screws on him. This particularly if Nolasco truly is viewed as a malcontent within the organization. I think this was a dumb move, at least dumb in the sense that the agent shouldn't have told Doogie and made it public.
  6. https://mobile.twitter.com/DWolfsonKSTP/status/707425481151401985 Ricky's agent tells Darren Wolfson that the Twins paid Ricky a lot of money and they expect the Twins to give him another chance to start. He also says if the Twins put him in the pen, they may request to explore other options. This sounds like good news to me, if Ricky can't cut it. Seems to me, when players are disgruntled and get their agents involved, those players often move on, one way or another.
  7. Does Klaw think Fulmer will be a reliever due to his size? We know that's been a hang up of his in the past.
  8. I know the conventional wisdom is that some of the better choices are going to chose not to be nominated because the nominating process looks like it's going to be a farce if there will be on at all, and no one wants to get roasted in congress on a fool's errand, particularly since it will hurt their chances at a selection at a later date. But will it really hurt their chances later? This is a unique situation where everyone knows that the conservatives are making a mockery of the situation. Would there even be a stain? Getting their name out there and looking like the judge-in-waiting would seem to be more like a badge of honor this time.
  9. Are you asking the government to abolish the NCAA? That seems like quite a long shot and can't see how they'd have any standing to do so. The biggest problem with the NCAA is Men's Basketball and Football and not coincidentally, those would be the two sports that the NCAA would probably only give a damn about protecting. All the student athletes in the non-revenue sports would pay the price, the sports causing all the problems will still cause all the problems.
  10. Yes, but they are presenting all Minnesotans and Dakotans as being their target customers. They absolutely tout Target Field on their Winter Caravans. I'm not disputing who they are actually considering when setting prices, I am simply trying to point out who they are CLAIMING to target. They say the Twins and Target Field are for all of Minnesota, and not only when it comes to paying for it.
  11. I agree, but with the second, I fear that the money making sports are taking care of themselves, but without public funds, the non-revenue generating sports will all get the axe. That would include baseball. Not sure what to do about that.
  12. I'm not refuting any of that, just that the team likes to portray itself as a Minnesota product for Minnesotans.
  13. Buxton has a lower chance of not coming north than Arcia and Santana. And Buxton's odds are very, very high.
  14. If the Minneapolis index is used, then perhaps they should rename themselves the Minneapolis Twins because they are no longer reflective of the rest of the state in terms of affordablity.
  15. I think Sanders sticking around is good for Clinton. If she was the run-away winner the Republicans would already be painting themselves as the underdog, which is always a bonus. I like Bernie, but I am 90% concerned with making sure Trump or Cruz aren't elected and only 10% concerned who the Democratic candidate is. Sounds messed up, but that's what I most care about. Bernie's age works against him, but so does his Socialism. In the Democratic primaries, Clinton doesn't hammer away at that and it's getting minimal play in the media. BUT what's going to happen when the self-proclaimed Socialist is in a debate with Trump and Trump starts calling him a Communist? He surely will. Bernie won't be able to sufficiently explain that he isn't a Communist because too many folks will be blinded by the word or too stupid to understand the difference. I still think Bernie would win, but I don't want to take the chance. I also don't want Republicans to energize their base with another Red Scare and get people out to vote who normally wouldn't because they can't bring themselves to vote Trump. Getting the Republicans out to vote who hate Trump but are more afraid of Bernie Stalin will hurt the chances of getting the Senate back.
  16. Kim was at the hospital when the doctor did that, but I can't remember if she was out of the room. I kind of always got the feeling that Howard was humoring Chuck because he respects him so much. I'm not sure that he actually believes that there is a physical problem, simply he doesn't want to call him out.
  17. I'm not worried about Nolasco pitching well. I'm not really worried about him bombing in fact, I'm worried he will be somewhere between OK and Not Awful and the team will be indecisive about replacing him with a young guy. That goes for Hughes as well.
  18. We all like to think that until he gets to the majors. See Pedro Florimon. No one was satisfied with that.
  19. I have to say, for all the talk about the current/previous makeup of the court being conservative and this nominee putting the court over the top for the liberals, there haven't seemed to be many conservative victories in the court for quite awhile. I mean even the "conservative" judges are taking a crap all over the abortion cases that the insolent Red States were causing the Court to see recently. I really don't know if it's actually going to make much of a difference if the new judge is labeled "moderate" or "liberal". It's not like they are voting on policy, they are interpreting the laws, and it seems to me moderate folks, or at least judges, are interpreting laws the same way the liberals are, and largely, so are the conservative SC judges.
  20. I think they are past the point of no return there, any November ballot with Trump on it is a victory for the Democrats and Trump will be on the ballot one way or another now. I think they're on the verge of giving away the Senate and giving up seats in the House.
  21. I'm not sure of the physics, but some guys just aren't able to spin it right. If it was something you could teach someone, Matt Capps would probably still be in the league and Mike Pelfrey's 94 MPH FB would probably have gotten him a 9 figure deal by now.
  22. Tonkin might not be any good and he may need to be DFA'd, but I must not be on the same page as most people, because of all the bullpen woes last year, Tonkin didn't seem to be one of them. He got demoted twice last year, not after a string of rough outings, but both times after a single rough outing. He had no leash.
  23. You're missing out on our healthcare here, we all make to 94.
  24. I don't appreciate that exclamation mark.
  25. I'm with those that think season one is far superior. I liked season 2 and season 3 didn't turn me off from the show, but 1 was easily the best. I didn't know what the ulterior motive was in season one. It looked like it was ambition to get to the top, but I kept wondering if it was all based on revenge with the ultimate goal of ripping apart the government. Since his goal of getting to the top was revealed, the intrigue has been gone. Not the suspense, but the intrigue.
