  1. Who was a 36-year-old rental making the same amount Dozier is now. Dozier should command far more.
  2. I thought Viola pulled out, I remember Carl Willis was a finalist. Either way, I can only imagine the ire and calls of 'country club!' had they chosen another former ex-Twin.
  3. Established pitchers tend to be pretty close to free agency, I don't know that guys nearing the end of their contracts are a good fit for a rebuilding team. At least not good in terms of being a centerpiece of a deal for a prime trade chip.
  4. It's not like the Twins have one of those now who would be kicked to the curb though. Maybe Kepler will hit lefties; he hasn't yet. Also perhaps I missed the premise, but I thought it was under the hypothetical that Kepler ended up playing 1B, so it's not like the team would be losing him. If Palka is the back up plan, again only for the hypothetical, a bargain free agent shouldn't stand in the way. Bellinger does interest me and I like Kepler in the OF for what it's worth.
  5. There's also a glut on RF in the free agent market of all levels of skill. If a team was free agent shopping this year (not that the Twins are) corner bats are where the bargains are going to be. With that said, if there is interest in Eddie Rosario and there's someone out there the front office likes, there's room for movement there too.
  6. And no one really even knows if he had any kind of power or the mental capacity to wield it recently. Either way, he's dead now so..... Do we want to stand around doing nothing but seeing who is better at spitting on graves or do we want to get down to business? I kind of thought that was what Trump's campaign was all about. Who cares who said what? Isn't that all part of the symbolically empty crap people supposedly voted against?
  7. I agree that there is some team/fan perspective distortion quite often. Look at how many of us are ready to ditch Kyle Gibson. However if Gibson underachieved for another club and he was cheaply available right now, most of us would probably welcome the chance to buy low on a guy with his pedigree.
  8. Yeah, and that's only on 19 doubles and 6 triples. If his bat progresses like it did after his last call up, he's going to rack up a ton of XBH.
  9. I thought Viola wanted to stay on the East Coast due to health issues or to stay near his family. Also, they had Brunansky who was just canned. I'm not one for bringing back familiar faces, but if the Twins are organizationally short-staffed in terms of front office, scouting and development, they're going to have to find new employees somewhere. I don't know how many new hires they are looking at, but I doubt they'll be able to just snag them all from existing clubs, they're going to have to get quite a few guys who previously did not have work. It might not be too easy to draw lower-level (and likely lower paying) positions like "instructor" to Minnesota, it's probably easier with guys who are familiar with the team and liked it here. I'm not sure if these positions are ceremonial or stepping stone jobs, but from my recollection all three of these guys had post-playing aspirations of joining front offices.
  10. I can tell you from a very agriculturally Red state, the farmers are very anxious to end diplomatic and trade red tape with Cuba, they are eager to start shipping food to a neighboring country that is always desperately in need of it. Trump raising a stink about this wouldn't play well with a particular demographic of his supporters.
  11. Yeah he has power, his K rate dropped from 27% in A ball to 20% in AA while his BB rate increased from 9% to 12%. This guy is is starting to look really good.
  12. I'd have to disagree, Ryan seemed to be a bit of a fence straddler to me. I don't think he ever embraced the "All" part of all or nothing. He never made the big move to go for "All" likely because he was fearful that if it didn't work out he would have "Nothing" which is what his half-measures got him anyway. I'd welcome a new approach even if it doesn't work out, and if it doesn't, try something different the next time.
  13. And even if they would buy it, there's none to buy. And it might not just be a fluke this year, it's just as likely a trend that nearly all teams are willing and are able to meet the demands of their best pitchers enabling the club to retain them into their early 30's. It's trade or bust this year and could be for the foreseeable future as well.
  14. There has been evidence of sexual abuse in the Rangers system, but let's remember not to flat out accuse the other teams and MLB of backing this kind of behavior without evidence. This is pretty damning stuff, if it's true consequences including prison time need to be meted out liberally at all levels, but making assumptions based on rumors and innuendo is pretty libelous. At this time any discussions regarding league-wide complicity should probably be framed as more of a hypothetical discussion than as concrete accusations.
  15. I'd like the Twins to get some pitching back for Dozier, but power hitting 1B prospects just seem to be a dying breed. That's not to say there aren't power hitting 1B in the league, it just seems that most of them didn't come up as 1B, they used to play something else. If Bellinger ends up being the target, I really hope Falvey already has multi-year game plans written in pencil for Sano, Vargas, Park, Kepler and Mauer. Bellinger is really appealing though, he sure looks a lot like Anthony Rizzo. Also a thought, if the Dodgers have to cut payroll what would people think about throwing in Santiago and taking back Scott Kazmir? He's got a couple of ugly years left on his contract but it's not like the Twins are going to be hurting for payroll flexibility in the next couple years. Taking on his contract might really sweeten the offer from the Dodgers if they truly have their backs against the wall in terms of debt.
  16. I think I like Deleon better than any of the Braves pitchers. Also, as much as I like Dozier, the Twins need to make trades with their best interests in mind. If Dozier wants to play in Atlanta he can see if they want him in two years when he's a free agent. On a related note, Atlanta has had a run of top starting pitching prospects for about a decade now but none have had any sustained success. What's going on over there. Is it mostly due to injuries? If so why is it happening?
  17. Sounds good to me. Interesting that in the Dodgers trade the Twins get their top two prospects while the Nats only have to give up #3 and #12. It seems as though Santiago and Perkins are actually more valuable than Dozier. Best news I've heard all day!
  18. I also wonder if exit polling was accurate. I have to think there would be a considerable amount of people who voted for Trump that declined to answer on the record.
  19. I haven't been on Facebook in years. I don't know my password and the email address I used to set it up (which is where a new password would be sent) was long ago deleted due to inactivity. I couldn't log on if I wanted to. Living life with only Twins Daily as my 'social media' outlet is great; I recommend it to anyone who has an inking to set themselves free of online commitments!
  20. If MLB viewed pitch framing as cheating there's a pretty easy solution, that being balls and strikes called electronically. Of course now that the Twins signed a guy good at pitch framing and perhaps not much else, I fully expect that to be in the new CBA.
  21. I guess I'd like to know if it was Pohlad's frugalness or Ryan's stubbornness that lead to the Twins having what we now know as woefully understaffed and outdated front office, analytics, scouting and development teams. Seeing as Pohlad appears to have given Falvey the green light to expand and update, it's hard to imagine he wouldn't have given Ryan the same authority had he asked for it. While I would have liked change sooner, I think having a "hands-off" owner is very beneficial in most ways. Just perhaps not this hands-off.
  22. Yup it's great. I finished it a week or two ago. I still catch myself thinking about some of the episodes, a couple of them really, really stick with you. Did anyone else feel guilty after the first episode? The schoolboy in me thought the premise of the pilot was really funny right up until the conclusion at which point I felt as ashamed as all the random characters in the episode. It set up the series perfectly as I had no clue what to expect going in but knew exactly what I should expect after. The episode that was probably the biggest gut-punch to me was Shut Up and Dance in Season three.
  23. I think the votes will be in the Dems pockets next time around, but on the condition that they actually put effort into right philosophies like the things listed by Chief. I think there is going to be a temptation to sit back and wait for Trump/GOP/Alt-right failures and use them as the main political platform instead of passionately showing what they would do right or would do differently. They're going to have to resist the "See I told you so" crap that permeated through everything this past election even if that's the kind of rhetoric that got Trump elected.
  24. So how do people feel about taking a higher upside guy who is further away? Will people be disappointed with "wasting" a roster spot for a guy who's clearly not ready? How about if the rosters are expanded to 26 players.
  25. Man, Cameron might have to rethink that one after seeing Jean Segura snag Tijuan Walker and Ketel Marte. Or am I the only one who thinks Segura's 2016 was a mirage?
