    I wasn't very interested in Robbie Ray as his diminished strikeouts and increased walks are a flashing warning sign, but the Padres only got him (from an inter division rival no less) by eating only half of his salary and giving up what appears to be two absolute nobodies. So I'm thinking Tom Pohlad's declaration that the Twins are willing to take on significant salary was a bit of hyperbole. Like most of us probably suspected.

    Yeah, but this one is typically correct, particularly when you're a fence straddler like the Twins. The available veterans they could chase are mostly bad to average players with severe red flags and glaring faults. The trade deadline and free agency as a mid-market 'buyer' feels like taking my kids to a garage sale where they'll be damned if they don't come away with at least ONE treasure. But of course a week later it's clear we already had better treasure at home and that useless trinket is now headed for goodwill.

    I like Morris quite a bit, and I'm happy the Twins have found Gomez, but Gomez in particular doesn't look the part of Duran/Jax. His K% is subpar for a high leverage reliever, he throws hardish, not hard and he's got command issues that will likely limit his consistency. But I think amongst the current young starters, Matthews, Preilipp, Abel, Rojas; the odd man/men out will prove to be the relief guys they are looking for. Raya Culpepper and Klien have a shot too when they commit to them being one inning pitchers.

    Then they can get him off the waiver wire when the Dodgers release him tomorrow. A 32-year-old platoon player shouldn't be on the roster at all when there is higher caliber talent that is already over due for a promotion. And a guy with 1 HR on the season isn't "mashing" anything.

    Interesting that this headline could have been used for both of the last two games. I'd still say no to the bases loaded. Free passes have been an issue for the Twins bullpen this year.

    Presuming Tait is still a higher valued prospect than Diaw, I'd look to trade Tait first. If I had to pick one stat to make an educated guess on a hitting prospect, it would be OBP and Diaw has gotten on base at an elite clip at every level. But I'm not trading anybody of note for rental players.

    If you're a Tigers fan, it's hard not to like the return for a rental, even if it's the best rental in the league. As a Twins fan, I don't want Hope and Ryan in the Tigers system. The Mets got nothing back because they traded away a guy who apparently can only pitch well while wearing a Brewers uniform.

    If this team is trading for rentals, the rentals should be salary dumps with minimal player equity going back. Like the Minter deal. Trading Larnch is fine, but trade him, in a package perhaps, for someone who’ll be here beyond 2026.

    Yeah the prospects need to be up getting reps, but that could be done by trading/DFAing/demoting Bell, Gray, Martin, Kriedler and/or Roden. But trading for more relievers blocks Raya, Culpepper, Matthews from getting needed reps too.

    I get trading Larnach, but why for a rental? I’m starting to become gravely concerned this team cares most about making a token playoff appearance this year and has no eyes on being a legit contender next year and beyond.

    Right. Instead of raising the ceiling, which without question is what real contenders do.

    Yeah, this looks like a move just to make a move. This is a guy who would/should be left off of a playoff roster. Why wouldn’t you want Rojas getting those starts instead? Kind of a symptom of post Correa Twins roster building though. Competitive teams add to the top of the roster. The last two years the Twins have primarily only tried to add to the bottom of the roster. Which is basically just DFA candidates.

    I mean, if it’s me, Rojas is in the rotation over Matthews and the new guy, and Rogers is either DFA’d or invited to enjoy the games from the press box.

    I just don't think ERA means a whole lot for pitchers moving from team to team. And definitely not wins. Don't get me started on WAR. Gausman's strikeout numbers and walk numbers are still really, really good, and much superior to Ray, and those should be much more translatable skills. Ray's strikeouts are way down this year and he's actually leading the NL in walks. To me his other numbers look like a fluke and he's quite possibly about to walk off a cliff. Oracle Park does tend to make pitchers look good.

    I'd say no to May and Singer as they're ground ball specialists and the Twins infield, uh, isn't. I could do Ray, but if the team is eating salary to prove a point, give me Kevin Gausman and his strikeouts.

    I have to say, the apostrophes (note: not quotation marks) around 'Having Nightmares' almost makes it sound like someone from the Twins provided that statement on the record and not Bob Nightengale. In any case, it wasn't a good trade. But I am still pretty excited about Rojas. Tons of the Twins previous 'bad trades' had next to no redeeming values, but there's a good chance that even if they 'lose' this one, it won't be a complete bust.

    As far as I know, that only matters when it comes to ROY voting these days.

    I mean, obviously their track record says they are undefeated at being right...........

    Don't get me wrong, I don't want to sell either. I want to retain Ryan and Jeffers, even if only through 2027. I also want to make sure any needed key young players in 2027 are getting the experience and reps needed. Winning games in 2026 is a bonus and I hope they continue to do so.

    Yeah, the velocity and the ensuing strikeouts are the biggest question mark for sure. I do like the track record over two teams and how infrequently he hands out free passes though.

    Minter actually has reverse splits this year giving a .810 OPS against left handed hitters. Presuming the Twins were paying attention before they traded for him, it's possible he wasn't brought in to be a typical left handed specialist.

    Well, that's likely because our priorities are slightly different; like a year off. Which is also OK. I'm really happy the team is playing competent ball this year, and I don't want to take that excitement away from anyone. It's just that my belief is if they play their cards right, next year could be the real deal; and maybe for a good long stretch.

    Yeah, that's where I am. **If they felt they had to get a bullpen arm, I presumed it would be a strikeout artist for late game scenarios. This is fine, and I'm definitely not in any way mad about it, but it's not what I thought was needed. Don't care about the prospects, but I don't need more bullpen moves after this, because I do care about the roster spots and getting innings to the young relievers who still need to continue adjusting to relief work. That's who this team has to count on next year and the foreseeable future. Possible bonus though, as he's a lefty, perhaps the Twins would then swap out Matthews for Rojas in the rotation. That's where both should be in 2027.
