  1. Or that what Molitor's lineup card said was different than what he was telling the umpire. Or that Molitor didn't understand that his lineup card was marked wrong. The umpire could have blown it, we don't really know what happened. But it seems like a huge coincidence that a screwup of this magnitude occurred with an AL team. Not that this is something that I'd put any weight on when deciding Molitor's future, I don't care about an honest mistake. It happens.
  2. When a double switch screw up happens in the uncommon instance of an AL manager playing by NL rules, and the AL manager was a player who never played in the NL, it's a struggle to think it was the umpires fault.
  3. And Gibson is probably going to be a tough arbitration case this off season; at this point I'd think he's very unlikely to get tendered. He's not going to be able to make a case for himself in Rochester. The well might be too poisoned in Minnesota for him anyway, due to his own results of course. If he does figure it out it might be inevitable that it's after he leaves here.
  4. This along with Hughes' recent development have me pretty skeptical about the TOS surgery. How close was Jay to actually going through with the procedure I wonder. Because it certainly seems like there's a high likelihood of it being a career-ender. What did pitchers with this ailment do before this procedure became available? Were their careers over? Did they recover in some way? Ugh, I'm no surgeon or pitcher, but I'm not comfortable with this thing. I have no reason to think everyone isn't doing their due diligence, but I sure hope they figure out a different way to treat this thing and this surgery is just a short lived remedy du jour.
  5. I'm not making excuses for Gibson, but he previously only dabbled with a curveball and now is going to it more steadily and it's already become his best pitch. He's also cut his sinker usage this year. He seems to be making an actual attempt to change his game which makes me think there is at least a chance that it may all come together finally. Not that I think the odds of it actually happening are worth getting worked up about. I'd just prefer him to some of the other options.
  6. It was really between Mejia and Gibson, at least they made the right choice there. Clearly they wanted to have the extra starter and they could keep them all if one of those two (or Berrios) were sent down. All things being equal, I'd rather see Gibson in the rotation ahead of Colon and Garcia,* but all things are not equal. *Not that I really want Gibson in the rotation.
  7. Which surely will be in the back of their mind when considering former top prospects.
  8. I don't think Boston has much starting pitching depth. Doug Fister and Kyle Kendrick were their veteran rotation depth pieces and they've been brutal.
  9. Is it wrong that I'm jealous of both of those teams?
  10. Is this Giminez talk just speculation? Because I was really hoping to see if he'd finish with more IP than Colon.
  11. It will also give the player and the agent a lot of leverage to demand where they want to be. The elite HS kids would be demanding to go to their desired markets.
  12. Yeah that still looks great. A Thor/Hulk buddy movie is a really fun idea.
  13. I know Dr Watkins, he was an orthodontist when I was a kid. Can't be that serious, he's probably just getting his braces off.
  14. I also think the White Sox could suprise everyone and start contending at any moment. The team looks flat out awful, but a lot of the guys they traded for are already MLB ready and they are going to have some serious money to spend when they're ready. They may perhaps hold off on the free agency lunacy until 2019 though when everyone's drooling about Harper and Machado.
  15. The days when free agents got paid based almost solely on what they did the prior year(s) is over. Today it's more about what will you do for me now. I don't think clubs always use that same logic with their players under contract. There's a lot of 'bird in the hand' mentality even if everything indicates that the bird looks like he's about to lay an egg.
  16. I didn't realize that Steve Singleton was the Ft Myers bench coach. I assume that's the same Steve Singleton that played MiLB ball for the Twins last decade?
  17. With the long arms creating leverage it would seem like the tall pitchers would fall into the Randy Johnson/Alex Meyer high velocity but wild category, but then you have the Chris Youngs, Mark Hendricksons and Doug Fisters who seemingly defy physics and don't throw hard and do have good command. Slegers definately looks like the Chris Young type.
  18. Santana is going to be 35 and every stat but his wins and ERA are pointing in frighteningly alarming directions. I'm not counting on him being a front of the rotation guy next year. I too think they need two front of the rotation guys if they want to compete next year. Maybe they get lucky and Mejia, Gonsalves, Romero or someone else internally surprises everyone. Not that I think the team absolutely must spend or trade big to find those front of the rotation guys, I'm convinced there are younger guys who can be had who are currently undervalued. This team has to do it's due diligence to find them. There's no reason this team can't find one of the half dozen bounce-back/breakout arms that arise each year.
  19. Yeah, I'm really for touting statistical analysis, but the defensive stuff still struggles to pass the smell test quite often. There are so many unmeasured variables. His UZR is negative solely based on his ARM. We've all seen him make some boneheaded plays, but we've also seen him nail many runners. For all we know the coaching staff wants him to be aggressive. Not hitting the cutoff and trying to nail the runner at home instead of keeping the runner on 1st could be something the Molitor and company want him to do. How would we know and even if we did, how would you measure that? Last week Mauer made a boneheaded play to cut off a ball that would have nailed the runner headed home and the runner on 1st still advanced to 2nd. I have to think a play like that would count against Rosario. And his Range in LF is above average, which was an issue for guys like Willingham, Young and Grossman.
  20. I was and still would be interested if the Cardinals would listen on Michael Wacha. He had a poor year last year and his numbers mid-June also weren't pretty, but he's got good velocity and lots of pitches. He's also still young and controllable. ?(Un)fortunately? He's pitched much better the last month so he might be harder to buy low-ish on.
  21. I guess I'm in the minority, but with his record of poor strikeout ability, poor walk rate, poor velocity, an NL only starter going from the worst division in baseball to the AL, I'd actually trust Gibson and Santiago more. And I don't trust them at all. For what it's worth, I've always had an aversion to soft tossing lefties who don't miss bats, not just Garcia. I've also had a strong aversion to NL only starters for quite awhile now. Those wells have been poisoned for me.
  22. I suppose my disagreement is with the pitcher himself and not the actual move. They can make a move or two if they want, that's fine by me. It's just that to me Garcia looks like a guy who half the board will be screaming to DFA after a month and the other half will be screaming about losing Prospect X for nothing. If others think Garcia looks like an honest attempt at improving the club I understand why missing out on this trade is frustrating.
  23. But trading for Jaime Garcia isn't aggressive, he's not a very good pitcher. He would be more half measures; I'm so tired of these kinds of putzy moves which are more PR than substance. If they aren't going to make serious moves to contend this year, I don't want them to trade for a pig, put makeup on it and try to sell that as an honest to goodness attempt to win.
  24. Maybe, but it seemed to me this site has been deriding Santiago since his first start in a Twins uniform.
