  1. I'm happy the front office is willing to make moves that are neither popular with the players or the fans, and right away in their tenure to boot. It doesn't mean the decisions are right, but it gives me confidence that they aren't beholden to less informed parties or ideals.
  2. When it comes to weight, we're never going to really know how the player or the front office feels about it. We can discuss it sure, but it's not like we're ever going to know if either party is concerned about it or if or when it is actually an issue. I'd guess the best indicator we could hope for is if or when Sano is offered an extension and of what length.
  3. I'd bet Santana gets in someday on a Veteran Committee, it'll probably take his contemporaries who personally knew how good he was to vote him in. Even more so than their postseason glory, I think the thing that Koufax and Puckett had that Santana didn't was a baseball-crushing sudden announcement of premature retirement. Had Santana's career abruptly and very clearly ended following the 2010 season, or even more dramatically after his no-hitter late in that season, I'd guess people would view him much more similarly to Koufax and Puckett. His retirement has just been too drawn out, he never got that sudden rush of sympathy and resentment which lingers eternal with athletes cut short in their prime.
  4. Hopefully that's because we've only seen half the picture thus far. The previous regime trotted out similar low ceiling cast offs, and while I can't speak for all fans, to me it always seemed like they were grasping at straws and never had any plan past "see what sticks". I'm anxious for the off season to see if and what Falvey and company do with the information they gleaned from the tactic. I'm expecting trades and free agent moves that make sense and fits with the pieces that stuck. If they don't, then I'll probably be criticizing as well.
  5. I like Vargas, and I'd like to see him get consistent at bats to see if he can put it together. His minor league walk numbers are good and his strikeout numbers are pretty reasonable for a slugger. But the kind of hitter he may become is pretty common in today's game. Corner/DH types aren't getting paid much, even if they do hit a good number of HR. Mark Reynolds', Adam Linds, Pedro Alvarezs and Mitch Morelands are available cheaply every year.
  6. I've done the math, and if Gibson gets seven more starts, averages 6 1/3 innings and only averages 2 ER per game, he can get his ERA under 5.00. That might make him tradable this off season! Go get 'em Kyle!
  7. I'm excited for Curtiss. He's one of those guys who's putting up great minor league numbers and actually has the stuff and velocity to support them. It always seemed likely that the team's future closer would be coming from the draft class of 2012 or 2014. Curtiss would have been toward the bottom of the list of likely candidates a couple years ago, but he might be the guy now. Fingers crossed! Also, he still wears the glasses doesn't he? He really should be rocking some Ricky Vaughn specs at the MLB level.
  8. Maybe the Twins don't see him as fatigued, maybe they see him with the same energy but he had a couple of bad outings and the team wants to see if they can wrap up his season with a better taste in his mouth. Do we have any velocity readings? From during his peak performances and during the two recent outings? I'd think his velocity would give us a better clue as to his current fatigue level.
  9. Can I throw out an alternative option (that will almost certainly get me run out of town)? How about the team extend Escobar instead? Cheaply obviously. Save the money for pitchers. So Escobar is under team control for just one more year and will likely get a decent final arb year raise. However, with Dozier still under contract, Polanco looking like he deserves another shot and Gordon knocking on the door, Escobar very possibly will have little playing time next year. If the Twins extend Escobar, they can probably get a discount on his 2018 season when he's likely to be riding pine, but would then have pretty cheap insurance in case Polanco and Gordon don't pass muster in 2019 or beyond. If Dozier is gone in 2019 (or sooner) the team will need another Escobar anyway. Escobar may be interested in an extension if he knows his playing time likely will be limited in 2018 which would cripple his chance at a reasonable free agent deal in 2019. He's not exciting, but he's fairly reliable and cheap. Plus, with the young Latin guys, I'd prefer a veteran Latin leader if that's something that's important to everyone.
  10. The problem with a Dozier extension is that because of his numbers, Dozier and his agent are going to want to get paid like a super star. However we have already gotten a glimpse of his true value when the team couldn't drum up any trade interest even with his potent bat. Every team has a good 2B. So if the Twins were to let Dozier walk after next year, he almost surely would be disappointed with the offers available. If the Twins were to extend him now they'd just as surely have to pay him more than he'd ultimately get as a free agent. I feel bad for the guy actually, in just about any other era he'd be looking at a pretty large deal.
  11. Honestly, Souhan seemed a bit restrained in this one. The piece didn't seem very inflammatory to me, simply the topic is a touchy subject. I think he was presumptuous, as usual; everything is going to be simple speculation when it comes to weight discussions. However he didn't seem to have his torch and pitchfork out in this article. His verbiage in this one in fact almost seemed sensitive. It was unnecessary but rather benign. And for the record, I typically have a hard time stomaching Souhan.
  12. I remember hearing reports that Samardzijia made it clear to the Giants that he would not waive his no trade clause except maybe to a specific team or two, like the Cubs or Dodgers.
  13. Yeah I'm skeptical about the Tigers requests. The Tigers need to rebuild, they very well may be more interested in prospects than getting money off the books. If the shoe was on the other foot, we'd all be screaming that the Twins need to eat the salary and get top end prospects.
  14. I'm not saying the Twins should go after Verlander specifically, but with Perkins, Santiago, Belisle, Breslow and surely Gibson coming off the books, the Twins are shedding 20.70M in five pitchers of which only one of whom has even been remotely useful this year. They don't have to spend it all in one place (though I'd vote they do) but they better be spending it somewhere. And I really hate the nickle and dime, quantity over quality approach to free agency. They're also shedding the 4M or what-not they're paying Garcia to pitch for the Yankees. Which makes me think they are more open to any and all options. At least more open than they used to be.
  15. Not to troll Minnesotans, but if I were to play this situation out it in my head it might go like this. Tigers GM: Justin, the Twins and Astros both want you but the Twins have given us the better offer. You're going to Minnesota! Verlander: Well I want to win a WS and Houston is a better team, that's where I want to go. Tigers GM: Sorry Justin, but that's not how it works, we have to do what's best for our organization. Verlander: Tough, I won't waive my no-trade clause for the Twins. If you want to get rid of my salary and get a prospect or two, send me to Houston. If not, we can revisit this in the off season when plenty of other ideal destinations may present themselves.
  16. Geez, he's already evaluating Trout Jr.? Is he even born yet?
  17. ***Moderator Note*** Let's discuss the minor leaguers without making it personal by rubbing previously stated positions in other's faces.
  18. I mean that would have to be the last straw for the Republican Party as we know it right? Not for the die hard Trump/White Nationalist supporters, but for the base voters who only voted Trump because they thought they couldn't live with themselves if they voted for a Democrat. Most Republicans aren't going to identify with Facsists, Nazis and segregation right? Right?
  19. I thought we did. Who un-banned him?
  20. Speak for yourself, I'm money in those situations.
  21. More than happy for Brannon to plaster Trumps face next to swasticas.
  22. Nope spoke just in time. The ol' reverse psychology bit.
  23. Get the kids to bed and this is what I come downstairs to? I need to start letting my kids stay up later. Bed time is bad luck.
  24. See, that just proves Trump doesn't support White Nationalism (cries every tea partier up for re-election).
  25. The only thing to regret about letting Gibson go is that the team didn't try him in the bullpen. Because if he ever does resurface as a usable pitcher, it almost surely will be in that role. Good luck to him where ever he may end up.
