  1. Homerun totals have increased by 20% since 2015 and it sure didn't look like a one year fad.
  2. There were plenty of us saying that Santana had no business taking the mound in Yankee stadium for the WC game well before it took place. It's a different game, the Yankees and the Astros are going to get their HR, it's pretty unavoidable, so you have to take the free unproductive outs that they're willing to sacrifice to get their bombs. Maybe there was a day when a rotation full of Santana's could hold their own and win a playoff series if they were lucky, but that day is not today. I don't know how anyone could watch baseball this year and not see that. The top eight teams by K% all made the playoffs and the other four AL playoff teams were all top five. It's an arms race and the Twins are way behind. They need high upside, not high floor.
  3. Because in an age where it's all about HR and strikeouts, the Twins can ill afford to load up their rotation with league average to below average strikeout guys. We've been trying that for the last decade to no avail. This team needs to find big strikeout arms, even if it's volatile high risk/high reward types. As good as Ervin Santana has been, this team couldn't win a WS with five of him in the rotation.
  4. For me the problem isn't age so much as position. Just look at all of those names listed in the article; everyone has a good 2B which is why the Twins couldn't trade Dozier last year. Should he find himself in the free agent market, Dozier would almost certainly have to take an offer well below what his offensive numbers suggest. But to extend him, the Twins would be forced to pay for those numbers. Let his contract expire, offer him a QO and then re-sign him then if the team still needs him. I'd bet it would be cheaper then than now.
  5. I'd prefer to leave the spot open for mixing and matiching. But I threw out the name Carlos Santana awhile back just as a guy Falvey might target. I've since started to get an itch for him, with an eye on him heading to 1B in 2019 once Mauer is done.
  6. I'm not surprised Garda is in the conversation with Dombriwski there. All remains "old school" managers should drooling.
  7. And those names are probably currently still on teams playing baseball.
  8. Well if Falvey was going to go country club recruiting at his old stomping grounds, I wouldn't need any convincing that he should start with raiding Cleveland's pitching minds.
  9. If that had any bearing on the decision, I'd not only be disappointed, but quite upset. I can think of other actions that would better curry fan favor, like four dollar beers at the stadium, $140M payrolls, traditional double-headers and owner financed stadiums. If the Pohlads are making any onfield-impacting calls to appease fans, MLB needs to strip them of their ownership.
  10. The silence on the subject is starting to get lengthy.
  11. Only one of the parties did something illegal. Seems to me the notes that need to be taken are: 45-year-olds should be able to handle breakups better than 15-year-olds.
  12. Agreed, if we're not challenging balls/strikes I don't see why we'd challenge a check swing which is simply an extension of balls/strikes. If (when) the strike zone gets automated that will too.
  13. Yes, the teams that can most quickly decide which pitchers are destined for the bullpen, pitcher reluctance be damned, have a great advantage.
  14. Perhaps it would be better to look at the free agent starters list to find relievers. Many of the best relievers were guys who were well thought of young starters who just couldn't make it work in the rotation. Wade Davis, Andrew Miller, Mike Minor, Archie Bradley, Raisel Iglesias, Brad Hand, Juan Nicasio, Alex Comome. I vote to go get guys like Wily Peralta and Asher Wojciechowski who already had good velocity as starters and stick them in the pen to start the year.
  15. I don't know about that, but he was hesitant to go to Houston who is one of the four best teams in the league and likely will be through the remainder of his deal. I think there was next to no chance he was going to waive his no trade clause to go to Minnesota when he knew better clubs were asking for him. I don't think there is anyone to blame for not getting Verlander except Verlander himself; he held all the cards.
  16. If the Twins successful sac bunt attempts is worse than their successful stolen base percentage, why not just go with straight steals? Of all the sac attempts, there sure better have been none that involved moving over Buxton and Buxton alone.
  17. Perhaps the team can instead solidify the rotation and hope Gonsalves makes his case where the Twins have to decide if they keep him down in AAA or put him in the MLB pen until a rotation spot opens.
  18. I just hope there isn't any kind of internal strife where the front office says he doesn't fit and Pohlad says tough luck, he stays. That could sink the ship pretty quick. Pohlad has to concede to the baseball guys whatever their position might be.
  19. We'll see, the coaching staff I'd like to retain.
  20. I'm curious to what the dynamic truly is here; most seem to think that if Molitor won't be back it's because the analytically inclined front office doesn't like Molitor's old school approach to bunting and/or bullpen. But then the question needs to be: Why did Molitor continue to operate that way? Did he do it despite suggestions to do otherwise from his bosses? Did he do it because his bosses kept their mouths shut and let Molitor do as he pleased? Or are we reading the front office wrong and they actually agree with Molitor's usage? I'd have to think the first answer gets him fired the third extended and the second could go either way.
  21. ***Moderator Note*** Please try to tone down any lingering doom and gloom and let's completely cut out any off topic tangents.
  22. Ugh, does Molitor have the guts to pull him?
  23. I'm a bit worried about the White Sox. Aside from the affordable Jose Abreau who's likely to be traded, James Shields is the only guy on their roster who's not on a rookie contract and he'll fall off the books next year. Machado and Harper are basically in the same market now, any chance they are friendly and have seen the "super-team" approach the NBA players have taken? The Phillies also look like they've might be planning on something big.
  24. Give me Moya over Boshers. I don't want to see him get in at all. I understand why Sano isn't on the roster, but man, if this team ends up needing a RH bat to hit a HR off of Chapman in the 9th to keep the season alive, there's going to be a lot of second guessing this offseason if it ends up being Vargas or Giminez getting the AB instead.
