  1. I feel there still isn't anyone there to match up with Verlander, Kluber, Sale or Severino. Signing a bunch of #3s might get a couple extra wins in the regular season but they don't mean a thing when the first round of the playoffs is one game.
  2. He would only exasperate this team's continued inability to miss bats. They need to start addressing that deficiency with every new starter they decide to bring in.
  3. The money would be more due to inflation, but I agree, Lynn and Cobb seem to fall more into the Nolasco/Santana tier of free agency. Aim higher; make a trade if necessary.
  4. I say we just give him back the incriminating photos we have of him with the dead prostitute. Save the copies for his second contract of course.
  5. Only if he's the key sales pitch to getting Otani.
  6. I mean as long as Tonkin doesn't face live batters prior to the Twins getting Otani. Kidding of course. I think Tonkin will do quite well over there and be one of those returning vets that turns heads back inthe states once his Ham Fighters contract is over.
  7. I watched two episodes last night. It's well made but two episodes in and I still can't even tell what genre this is supposed to be; it simply is playing like a grounded period piece, but there's no way that's how it ends up. I can tell there are big twists a-coming but so far the story is so straightforward it's hard to picture how the writers will make any atmosphere change feel organic. I might have been spoiled by Mindhunter though. That was a really smart show. I love a show that lays out every character as a stereotype or trope but then goes about quickly breaking some while pinning down others.
  8. Yes, that would be a fantastic thought. This year's free agent class isn't very inspiring so normally I would think it's a poor time to spend money, but symbolically I'm all for it. After two decades of never doing anything more than luke-warm aggressive, I'd welcome a completely different strategy, even if it fails.
  9. I don't need to define an ace, I'd rather just look at it as a game of 1-on-1. In next year's WC game, does the guy the Twins are targeting have a fair chance of out-dueling the guy the other team will run out to the mound? Does the Twins #2 then have a chance to out-duel the next team's top dog in Game 1 of the ALCS?
  10. Well I'm OK crossing my fingers that Berrios continues to develop into a better pitcher than Santana. Otherwise, yeah, I want two better than Santana. They don't have to be signed though, I'm fine with trades. Also, I don't care if they were better than Santana last year, I care about next year and the year after. I'll be OK if the front office gets young guys they believe in who have yet to peak, even while the fan base struggles to look past what said hypothetical pitcher did last year. And so we're clear, Santana had a 4.77 xFIP and a 2.9 fWAR. Despite his smoke and mirrors first two months, I don't think Santana was all that fantastic, and that's not even taking into account almost certain regression from a 35-year-old pitcher. I know others will disagree, but I don't think the bar is set all that high.
  11. I'm not OK with a rotation that can't keep up with Cleveland and Houston come October. It's not good enough now, not even close. Ervin Santana would be the 4th starter on both of those teams.
  12. I don't know that I'm ready to commit Kepler to being a platoon player going forward, but perhaps if he's still really tanking against lefties by June and the team is winning you've got to adjust the game plan. I'd probably be more favorable about this plan if the team wasn't signing a 4th OF but instead signing a regular DH who could also play OF and hit lefties. Maybe a guy like Melky Cabrera?
  13. Well making things better down the road at the expense of today is pretty much what progressiveness is all about. I'm more than willing to pass legislation that will positively impact my kids and my grand kids even if I see little to no benefit today. That statement also applies to my stances on fossil fuels and climate change, healthcare, education reform, job creation to replace obsolete jobs, foreign policy/terrorism and taxation. It's really hard to comprehend how half of the country is consistently fine kicking the can down the road for eternity.
  14. The subjectivity and grey area that is determining an individual's personality seems like a good reason to put nearly all the emphasis on what the guy can do on the field instead of off of it. I'd rather use those leadership evaluations for the coaching staff.
  15. The guy's 39 though, I'm not putting any weight on what he did when he was 34. If he's a mid season waiver wire deal ala Colon, sure, I'm down for that. However Lackey isn't coming here on a non-guaranteed non-multimillion dollar deal; I don't know how a team that needs two top of the rotation arms could justify using a 25 man spot on him. I guess I'll add the caveat that if the Twins sign a Chatwood and trade for an Archer and Lackey's still sitting out there come February, sure, then go for it.
  16. Fine, Austin Jackson as the 4th OF and Tyler Chatwood as the #5 then. Why would anyone intentionally go out and sign a "5th starter" anyway? No team should be intentionally looking for a guy who profiles as a 5th starter, that's typically a pretty poor adjective for a guy and the spot that goes to the weakest performing member of the rotation by default. This team needs front of the rotation help. Signing Lackey is just going to mean there's 5-10M less to go toward getting the #1 and #2 that this team needs.
  17. I agree, I loved the Goonies vibe with the older Steve leading (or being led by) the younger group of kids. I listened to this study on Stranger Things and intertextuality last night. I thought it was pretty interesting.
  18. So if everyone should be able to have assault rifles because gun deaths are a mental health issue dealing with a lack of self control, shouldn't drugs be legal? The drugs didn't take themselves either.
  19. Last year the team signed a bunch of "clubhouse" vets who's benefits were pretty entirely off-field related. While Lackey and Worth may be a slight step up from Giminez and Breslow, it's not like these guys are a big help on the field. I really hope the Twins stop doing this. Isn't Carlos Santana known as a good clubhouse guy? Surely Addison Reed has some valuable veteran leadership skills? Can't we instead start getting veteran leaders that also contribute statistically?
  20. Not the less intelligent ones:
  21. Not intentionally, I was just angling for a rimshot.
  22. With the economic state of Detroit I'm surprised the city is starting a new country club!
  23. I'd trade Dozier if another team was offering a young arm with top end upside. I don't mind keeping him though if all that's offered is another De Leon deal. I wouldn't extend him though. He's going to want a big pay day and frankly his numbers probably warrant one. But if no one is offering up much in trade, he's not going to have many free agent suitors either. It's probably a unique situation, but if the Twins want him back after 2018 he'll probably be cheaper as a free agent then he would be as an extension now.
  24. If the Twins want a WS trophy, they need to get past Cleveland and Houston. I don't much care how Baltimore is farting about with their rotation these days.
  25. Drafts are broad and open to many areas of evaluation also. Through his tenure(s) I think TR drafts did fairly well finding bats. Pitching? Oh, boy. It seems next to impossible for an organization to go 40 years without drafting and developing an ace. You'd think you'd at least get lucky two or three times in that regards (sorry in advance to the Radke-was-an-ace debaters!) Seems like TR probably should have been constantly searching for outside expertise to address that issue long ago. Water under the bridge though.
