  1. I was a little bummed when the Cubs did the same thing with Drew Smyly. This works too, I like it a lot. I'd like to see the Twins to get into that Danny Salazar rumor though as well.
  2. Wait, the winter meetings have already started? That can't be accurate because...... We typically would lock or merge threads but this is an article not a one-off conversation thread. ****I wouldn't normally post this in a forum and would instead send a PM as I wouldn't want to derail the discussion but I can see where this might be a situation where many people are perplexed.
  3. I think MLB was so happy to get rid of Jeffrey Loria they didn't do their due diligence on Jeter's puppet-masters. I've got a bad feeling about these guys.
  4. Hmmm, so I guess their friends. And one of them got non-tendered? Oops. Guess this team should be shopping Garver and resigning Giminez.
  5. As one of the few good lefties available in free agency and on the trade block, I'd have to think the Twins would be pretty interested in Danny Duffy. As far as lefties go, all they have are the largely unproven Mejia and the even more unproven Gonsalves as rotation options, both of whom probably make pretty solid trade bait as well.
  6. I guess I can't recall what the injuries were so perhaps they were flukish, but he did miss about 1/3 of a season both in 2016 and 2014.
  7. Archer has been through the ringer of the AL East and has still come away as one of the division's top starters. He also misses a boatload of bats. Cole's consistency, injury history and lifetime in the NL makes me nervous. Plus the four years instead of two is huge. The fact that Archer is on such a small contract could also mean he'd be amenable to ripping up that contract and increasing his current base pay in exchange for adding on a couple of years, should the team want to extend him that is.
  8. If that's serious I'd like the think the Twins have already gotten confirmation that Chris Archer won't be traded because I can't see the Twins winning that sweepstakes without Gordon.
  9. When posting something of such ridiculousness a link is required. For us all to point and laugh at of course.
  10. They are too poor if your current "ace" is 120th during that time period.* I don't think many teams will go very far in the playoffs when they have to classify thier #1 as "top 50" in anything. *Even as a Santana denier, I was pretty surprised I had to go all the way to the bottom of page four to find him in starter FIP during that range.
  11. I'm always a guy who loves the prospects and wants to hoard them (but not now, I want to cash in for the big prizes) and I've been thrilled with Gonsalves' development, but for a guy who is supposed to be polished and have good control, he throws so many pitches. In the minors he can get guys to chase off the plate, in the majors he can't count on that. Berrios did that too, it took a demotion and some re-tooling then he came back up, attacked the zone and did well. However, Berrios has great stuff and can still miss bats while throwing within the zone, Gonsalves doesn't have have the same stuff, I think it's pretty unlikely he finds himself at the top of the rotation.
  12. So we've come full circle and we're back to W/L record? I thought Wins was basically the stat that got everyone to finally wake up to how silly some stats actually were. Nolan Ryan and Bert Blyleven were also both top 12 in losses in the 1980's as well. And lumping a guy in with Frank Tanana isn't a demerit to me; he's one of the all time under-rated pitchers in my book.
  13. Personally, I don't have nearly as much faith in Gonsalves as others do, I don't think he becomes a top end pitcher. He throws way too many pitches against minor league competition.
  14. Corner outfielders are a dime a dozen on the free agent market, I like Rosario better so I'd try to keep him, but if he or Kepler's youth and control are attractive to other clubs shopping top end starters, I'm all ears. I like Garver too, but he's a backup catcher, this club has made it pretty clear how much it values Castro's defense, Garver won't be starting for at least two years barring injury.
  15. They are young and very controllable, position or ability aside, they profile as the type of MLB ready players rebuilding teams always ask for.
  16. I'd include Gonsalves in a package for any good arm, it wouldn't take much to convince me to move Romero and/or Gordon as well. I'd be actively shopping Kepler and I would be willing to move Polanco from the MLB roster without too much hesitation. I like Garver but have a hard time seeing the club letting him usurp Castro any time in the next two years so I'd be willing to include him in a package as well. I'd also be willing to move Mejia, but since he's the only MLB ready lefty starter there probably would need to be a replacement for him in the cards. Lewis, Buxton, Sano, Berrios (and obviously Brent Rooker) are probably my only untouchables when it comes to getting front line starters. And I might cave on Lewis if it's for someone truly exceptional.
  17. Adding the Negro League players and later Latin and Asian players isn't adding to the bottom. The pool of talent has greatly expanded from what we probably still consider baseball's hayday.
  18. On the main ballot, a lower percentage of all players who played MLB baseball get in now than they did 30-40-50-60 years ago. There is 33% more players playing MLB baseball today than in 1968 and 47% more than in 1960, yet it seems the exclusivity standards didn't really change. They didn't change despite the fact that the players getting in when these exclusivity standards were created weren't even playing in an integrated game, meaning they were missing out on playing some of the best competition yet setting the bar for everyone who eventually would. I agree with the bigger Hall approach.
  19. I did not see that coming for Morris. Trammel had gotten most of the post ballot love, I thought there was more of a divide on Morris. Awesome news, good for Jack.
  20. Yes, unfortunately for teams like the Twins who have historically failed to create their own front line starters it is. I want a World Series trophy, the pitchers in the organization can't match up with the elite AL teams. What choice is there but last resort?
  21. I'm ok trading too, some of those trade targets you listed interest me, but the Twins don't need a #1-3, they need a #1. If the best this team does is acquire a 2nd or 3rd tier starter then we already need to start capping our hopes with another token playoff appearance and early exit.
  22. Has Gardenhire filled out his coaching staff yet?
  23. Didn't Tampa trade for a bunch of bonus money? Maybe they'll throw in some of theirs when they trade Chris Archer to the Twins.
  24. There are still plenty of teams holding international bonus money, not just the Mariners either. Could be the Twins are about to re-acquire some, plenty of folks here already thought they were nuts leaving some of the younger guys unprotected for the Rule 5. Does Kohl Stewart bring back a couple hundred K?
  25. At this point with absolutely no one on the MLB staff or prospects in the minors that can line up with Chris Sale, Justin Verlander, Corey Kluber or Luis Severino in a one game playoff? Yeah, absolutely. I'm done with early exit playoff appearances the status quo isn't cutting it for me. I don't care about the back end of that deal if it will give the Twins a shot to win in the front end.
