  1. I've never been a big Fister fan. He was cheap though so it's not a big issue I guess. But the Twins need two free agents better than Fister, heck better than Santana so I'd have no interest in his type at this point in the offseason. If the Twins accomplish the task of adding two big-time pieces to the rotation and there's a Fister-ish vet they can sign in February to compete with Gibson, Mejia, Gonsalves, Slegers, Jorge and May for the 5th spot, sure go ahead. Just don't make the vet any promises about a rotation spot just because he's making more money than the controllable younger arms.
  2. I'd be a bigger fan of Cole (and Stromen) if they'd stop with the sinker and pump up their strikeouts, but I wonder how much value Pittsburgh would put in the Twins taking back a less desirable contract. Are they regretting the Starling Marte deal? What if the Twins gave up Kepler and took on Marte, would the prospect haul need to be less? If not Marte, Gregory Polanco then? Marte's deal wouldn't be an issue for most clubs, maybe it's not for Pittsburgh, or maybe Marte is still seen as a valuable player. I just remember Pittsburgh making some really sketchy decisions lately because they're always so desperate to shed payroll.
  3. I'd be interested in Tommy Hunter. I also was asking for Carlos Santana a couple of months back but he seem to be getting more steam. I liked him as a DH/1B (maybe occasional corner OF?) with an eye on him being the full time 1B once Mauer is gone in 2019. The more steam he gets the less likely he'll end up being mostly a DH in 2018.
  4. So the Braves were just doing what every other team was doing but Coppolella's actions were unparalleled? Sorry, I know they're your favorite team but Coppolella's sins are the Braves' sins, no one's going to divorce the repercussions just because the team fired him. Also, in regards to bundling, no, every team was not doing it and seeing as the Red Sox got slammed for this offense last year and the Braves still went ahead and flaunted the rules, yes, they should have gotten a harsher penalty. The Red Sox got penalized 7/1/16 the Braves signed Maiten 7/2/16, others probably later.
  5. James' and Fangraph's pieces were a lot of fun. In my book, no one has to be right or wrong as long as everyone realizes that more information and new ways to understand it are a benefit to all. That's not solely related to baseball analytics either I guess.
  6. Right but last year everyone knew their record had over-performed their true talent based almost solely on an incredibly easy schedule. Add to that that they were having a QB competition between two guys who couldn't beat out one of the most maligned QBs in program history the last several years and I don't see how anyone could have had reasonably optimistic expectations this year.
  7. I agree, his reputation has increased, I remember him less fondly from decades past. I think it's kind of a last sentinel standing and refusing to leave his post at the gates of a razed kingdom kind of thing.
  8. There's no less evidence showing they will spend then there is that they won't spend. Regardless Ohtani isn't about spending money, all 30 clubs could afford him. Additionally, even if the Twins did the unthinkable and inked Darvish the team still would only be approaching their record budget in 2010 (2011?). With league wide inflation they'd still be below expectations. It's not about having money, it's about having guts. And there's no less evidence showing they do have guts than there is that they don't have guts.
  9. We don't know that. I don't think MLB would be doing this to Atlanta if there was a chance they would later have to slap all 30 teams with the same penalties. The Braves transgressions had to have been perticularly egregious in comparison to other actions taking place.
  10. I don't think being the "best" and actually winning a championship are co-dependent. There are always plenty of really good NBA teams but it's next to impossible for new teams to break through and get a championship. I think the Wolves are a least likely only because of the nature of their league.
  11. My brother-in-law is a Big 10 official and was assigned to do some late summer Gopher practices. He said at the time that this team looked to have as little talent as it's ever had and it wouldn't surprise him if the team went winless in the conference. I don't know, I don't follow the Gophers like I used to, was this collapse that unexpected considering how bad the offense was expected to be from the onset?
  12. If under this circumstance the Twins had Darvish, Ohtani, Cole, Berrios and Sanatana, I wouldn't see as big of a need for a guy like Gonsalves. In fact if the Twins were to somehow get two rotation pieces (Darvish and Ohtani work for me!) I would be pretty gung-ho about using the top end farm pieces to get one more stud arm to put the Twins on par with the league's top rotations. (Also, to be frank, I might be the low man on Gonsalves. Based on his high pitch counts despite good strikeout numbers I don't think he attacks the zone but instead gets minor leaguers to chase out of the zone; I think he might run into some serious problems at the MLB level. I'd look to sell high on him now, but let's keep that on the QT)
  13. That was a different front office. This new one has shown less attachment to personnel, money and most importantly prior operating procedures. I know he's still a long shot, but I gave the new guys a pass last year with the understanding that once they got a feel for their surroundings I'd be expecting big changes in year two at which point accountability for putting a championship caliber team together was solely on them.
  14. I guess my hope is that any overhaul, which may or may not include a draft, would help eliminate the unethical and sometimes dangerous situations that the young Latin players are too often being coerced into. Getting them to the MLB under better and safer circumstances would be my top goal, getting them paid top dollar would be a more distant priority.
  15. I'd have to think this Atalanta situation is going to cause a big push for the draft. If Pittsburgh and/or other teams also are found guilty I'd think there'd be enough outcry to get the ball rolling. Nothing like a good scandal to make people who otherwise wouldn't care demand change.
  16. For the players - I hope so. Selfishly - If my favorite team can stumble into star player cheaply once, before this ridiculous process is overhauled, Yay!!!!!
  17. Kyle Gibson wasn't getting results because he was pitching like a sinkerball pitcher, however upon his recall in the second half this year he was a pitcher who just so happened to be able to throw a sinker but was missing bats and getting outs with his superior breaking pitches. I would think that if the Twins thought that success was repeatable with Stewart that they would have protected him. So I wonder if at this time they feel he is either incapable or unwilling. To me Stewart looks like one of those top prospects who's going to need to experience a strong dose of failure and a willingness to make changes if he has a shot at reaching his potential; that might not be in the cards as long as he stays with the same team.
  18. The Twins reported strong interest in signing fellow countryman Yu Darvish, the reports that Ohtani wants to get in on the ground floor of a team on the verge of contention and not an established powerhouse, the Twins voiding the contract of their top international signing making them one of only a few teams that can offer Ohtani a real paycheck and the Twins surprisingly only filling 36 of their 40 roster spots. Plus, if he wants any chance to hit regularly, he's going to the AL; sorry Cubs and Dodgers. If it happens I'll be pleasantly surprised, but I'm not going to be one of many people around here flipping out if the Yankees sign Maiten next week. I'll wait until we see where all the chips fall before I get upset.
  19. You're more confident than I then. Not in the front office doing their due diligence but in the impossibility of signing Ohtani. I thought it was a pipe dream a month ago, there's been enough signs since to intrigue me however.
  20. I'd suspect there have been enough conversations that most teams already have a good idea about which team(s) are realistic for Ohtani. If our front office was as in the dark as us and proceeding based on unsubstantiated optimism, they're doing it wrong.
  21. Well it should be clear really soon which teams with bonus money plan on going after Ohtani. It would stink to save the money and pass on these guys for Ohtani and not get him, so you have to think only the clubs most confident in their ability to sign him will sit on their hands now.
  22. In Boshers' case it's probably nothing other than a dearth of LH relievers ready to contribute at the MLB level. Also, with four spots available, it's probably not fair to blame anybody who kept their jobs for costing the team any of the younger guys the team exposed. The team had room to do both but for reasons they'll probably never detail, they didn't.
  23. It seems Twins did most of their DFA'ing a week or so ago, looks like most teams waited until today. Perhaps the Twins have kept their multiple 40-man spots to target some of these guys they knew or hoped would become available. Anyone see any interesting arms let go today?
  24. I'd hate to lose those guys but I figured with Burdi's injury and Reed's decreased strikeouts and increased walks last year, both looked iffy to stick. Worth a selection in the draft though.
  25. But unless they are signed really early in the off season, usually when teams sign free agents prior to the draft the simply hold off on finalizing the deals until after.
