  1. I don't think any of these firings necessarily indicate the organizations were dissatisfied with the managers, it could simply be that they think they can get a superior one. It's not like the Yankees were dissatisfied with John Wetland, Tino Martinez or Alphonso Soriano, they just saw upgrades available in Mariano Rivera, Jason Guambi and Alex Rodriguez. I'd like to think the Twins look at the big picture and search for places to upgrade instead of narrowly focusing at their immediate situation and simply evaluate if someone deserves to keep their job.
  2. Maybe I read the tea leaves wrong, but I assumed when the Twins hired Falvey the idea was to do what Cleveland did; identify and procure a young stable of arms before they hit their peak and every other team wanted them.
  3. If you wait and he improves next year as much as he improved this year it's going to be more than double the projected cost. Seth's two free agent years are basically 2/$20M. That's what you pay #4 starters these days, the Twins are already used to eating money for far inferior pitchers.
  4. I can't imagine Kintzler or Belisle get big bucks though this year. I want velocity and I want strikeouts. I want free agents that can offer those things, otherwise I'd rather go with the young guys who can.
  5. When the metro's population and market share triples. So I guess getting Amazon 2 would be a great start. But I still think the team can win; just need smarter organizational and development plans then they've had the last decade or so. This team can get the league's best players in trades and free agency if they get them before they are the league's best players.
  6. Why do you think that though if Verlander literally took until the last possible minute to be convinced to accept a trade to a team with an enormously more covetable all around outlook?
  7. Agree. It's more important for the acquisitions to be smart and projective then "safe" and presumptuous. You're bringing a guy to a new team in a new ballpark with new coaches and a new atmosphere. Don't expect the same results.
  8. I think this team needs to do better than shooting for another Santana, and in my view Lynn, an NL lifer with middling strikeout numbers isn't as good as Santana. The problem with these second or third tier starters like Lynn, Cobb, Santana, Nolasco, Pelfrey and Hughes is that they've had just enough success to get rewarded with a multi-year big-time deal so they're going to stick with what they know and what got them there; they aren't going to get better, you just have to pray they don't get worse. You want to get a guy who has the ability to lead a staff but Darvish won't come near Minnesota? Buy or trade for the guys who at one time had promise but who have recently struggled yet still have good stuff. The guys who find success after having had their teeth kicked in yet had too much pride not to keep pushing or to try another approach are the guys who make the difference for clubs who can't get the big names.
  9. That might just end up being the hand we're dealt. The free agent crop is terrible outside of one pitcher all 30 teams want. I hope there are trades available, but we'll never really know who's actually for sale. I'm not at all being a defeatist particularly after seeing this team make the post season this year, but I don't want cosmetic fixes now just so some one can pretend and act like they tried.
  10. I'd like a front line guy but is there one in free agency aside from Darvish?
  11. I don't see this job lasting long. Not because of Gardenhire, just because that team looks like it's due to be a loser for a long stretch and the manager (and probably GM) will be out of there just prior to getting back on track.
  12. Good work on this. I don't agree with this entirely but it was well done. My desire to win has pretty much completely overshadowed my long history of sentimentality so I have no interest in keeping Mauer on the books or having a Kintzler reunion or Dozier into his late 30's. I like the idea of keeping the young guys together, but I wouldn't blink if Kepler was to be moved in exchange for young pitching.
  13. How's the baseball temperature in Portland Mike? Portland bumping Colorado for the eighth slot in the west looks to be screwing all the realignment attempts. Sorry to stereotype, but are all those young hipsters really into baseball?
  14. Except for the Twins who lose the game revenue and have way more travel. That's a recipe for having the lowest payroll in baseball.
  15. How about Vancouver instead? Then you'd get your Pacific Northwest team and your Canadian team all in one package. Then you can do whatever is the biggest market lacking a team. But I vote no on all of this business. I'm not against change, but I am against my team getting shafted and nothing in this proposal looks beneficial to the Twins. Is rather go the relocation route as sad as I'd feel for some of those fans.
  16. Duh, the tie goes to the person who better ridiculed the other guy's mom using ALLCAPS.
  17. I'm thought he was talking about Souhan and his disdain for anyone without a press badge.
  18. I have no problem applauding the ambition but shaking my head at the fact that they apparently did not do their homework.
  19. Their TV contract stinks because they hilariously overestimated how much they could charge broadcasters for their own TwinsTv network then had to come back groveling to FSN mid season to get their viewers back when their station predictably folded. FSN had all the leverage at that point, I'm guessing they did the Twins no monetary favors when the finally cut their deal.
  20. I'm guessing the author didn't take too many geography classes looking at those divisions. I'm not against change, but I am against a realignment that for some reason has the Twins in a division with clubs all in EST and the closest city is Detroit. Can't see many people happy with breaking up the Yankees and Red Sox either.
  21. Archer sounds fun. I wouldn't object to Martinez but I also wouldn't need such a big named replacement for the corner OF either.
  22. There will be plenty of top quality SP available the next couple of years who at this moment we don't recognize as top quality SP, surely plenty better than Lance Lynn as well. It's incumbent upon our highly praised young GM to identify and get them. There are Arrietas and Klubers and Strailys out there.
  23. I don't want to waste the money on free agents as aside from one or two who likely will not be available to the Twons, none look like they can anchor a staff. I'm all for trading for young arms though, preferably some that are still more speculative than proven. Proven guys usually means they've already peaked and will be more costly and will be gone sooner. My agreeability in hiring Falvey was because of the success Cleveland had in identifying and developing guys like Kluber, Carrasco and Bauer. In my view, that's what he was hired for. Time to get to work; I expect a similar remedy here.
  24. I'd have to think the fact that at that point in the season that the Astros were almost a cinch for the playoffs and a top seed and the Twins were much less likely to make the playoffs and a WC team at best would have been hard to overcome for the Twins. I love the Twins and am biased in favor of Minnesota, but if I'm Verlander and the Tigers tell me in July that I'm going to Minnesota or I'm going nowhere, I'd tell them I'm going to Houston or I'm going nowhere. If he ended up staying put, he knows there may be other suitors for him in the offseason.
  25. I think it's just the fact that almost everyone (except Mauer and Kepler?) have changed their swing plane. So many guys have made a concerted effort to lift the ball. Batting averages are down and strikeouts are up meaning the batters are willing to give up outs for the increased power. Just like making sure to get the free out on a sac bunt, the other team has to take advantage.
