  1. This is offensive to anyone in baseball who fought for a clean game and derided Bonds, McGwire and company, and that is a whole lot of people. Yeah, I'm sure Erick Aybar feels terrible that he has a job this year at the expense of a guy who cheated in an effort to keep one away from him. MLB tried and couldn't get the union to agree to tougher testing, stop laying this at the feet of MLB. They do some greedy stuff, but this isn't one of them, painting them as a villain here takes away from any argument where they actually are at fault. To get the union to agree to any testing conditions took a literal act of congress. This is on the players and the argument I'm hearing basically boils down to people are cheating but it's not fair for the DR players because they aren't as good at cheating. If you want to even it out, take it up with the MLBPA; let the league test these guys monthly and for any and all substances; the league will do it.
  2. I would understand it more if he were a 16-year-old getting busted. As it were he's 24 and had already secured a 750K signing bonus as a teenager. He may have been impoverished back in the day, he wasn't when he took the PEDs.
  3. At my job there are plenty of things I could do, illegal or immoral, which would help inflate my productivity and secure a bigger piece of my company's bonus and a raise. If I were to get caught doing something prohibited, I'd surely be fired, not simply suspended.
  4. How is the system for cheating players in baseball any diffrrent than the reward process for just about every other industry that incentivizes the best work? Should no company be allowed to award bonuses or commission because it might encourage the more unethical employees to break the rules and/or the law?
  5. Were all of those hamburgers medium rare or well done? I prefer them juicy myself. And lots of them.
  6. That seems incredibly offensive to all the DR players who don't test positive.
  7. Escobar struggled defensively at SS in 2016 but when he played there last year he was fine. I don't think there's really much debate that Escobar gets the job until he proves he can't do it. It's not like he's replacing Andrelton Simmons, Polanco had the 2nd worst UZR among the 20 qualified SS last year and there wasn't any immediate talk about replacing him.
  8. Where did you see that? That's definitely a plus.
  9. Based on last year he looks to have quite a bit more pop in his bat than Granite or Wade. Not that it makes him better, just different. I'd sure like to find a right hander, but having three near-MLB ready defensively versatile outfielders certainly improves the odds that someone will turn out to be a useful MLB player.
  10. We're you going to pick him for your Adopt A Prospect or something?
  11. No kidding, with the defensive versatility of those three and Granite's and Wade's excellent on base skills, that is one high floor for the entire Rochester OF. Just so many lefties though. I'd have to think the Twins are fairly open to moving someone.
  12. Don't see any link on MLBTR so not sure if they're breaking this. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/03/twins-acquire-jake-cave-designate-kennys-vargas.html The Twins are trading Luis Gil who's still in the Dominican League. Cave is another lefty outfielder, but I guess he can play all three positions. The Twins have DFA'd Vargas to make room. I'd guess/hope Cave has options in which case it's basically a swap of Cave for the out of options Vargas as far as the roster goes. His left handedness does not appear to be an immediate fit so this must be viewed as a transaction of opportunity rather than need. If he has options it probably is not going to impact Robbie Grossman for the time being. Edit: MLBTR has now added a Twitter link citing Berardino which I am not able to upload from my work computer.
  13. I guess I assumed the general feeling of disappointment thus far in the discussion was not that the players aren't rated higher but the fact that the Twins had not put themselves in the position to be in the top ten this year. My opinion was that it's unfair for us to expect them to be in that position every year. But perhaps I mis-read the vibe of the conversation.
  14. Harper's a West Coast guy. I'll go with the Dodgers with Arizona being the dark horse if they can shed some of Zack Greinke's salary.
  15. As long as he keeps using his four seamer to try to miss bats and limits his sinker usage like he did at the end of last year, I'll be satisfied that we've seen the best possible pitcher he can be. If it still doesn't work out with that changed approach they can cut ties with him and not have to wonder "what if?"
  16. I don't know that my expectations are overly high, I just think it's unrealistic for people to expect the Twins to have a top ten system year after year after year. The timing is never going to work unless a team nails each and every early draft pick and they all are on the same development schedule. Your elite guys are going to jump levels and get to the majors quickly while your developmental guys are going to take their time. It's a rollercoaster and the Twins just had an out-of-nowhere winning season last year because the last group of prospects just clicked at the majors. They have 3-4 guys left in the high minors, after that, it's the high ceiling low minors guys. The timing is almost surely never going to allow for a team to always have their high ceiling talent in the upper minors and if the team's best talent isn't at the upper minors you're not going to be high on these lists.
  17. https://www.twincities.com/2018/03/15/st-paul-saints-seek-minimum-wage-exemption-salary-cap-threatens-operations/ We've had a lot of discussion about how the minor leaguers often do not earn a livable wage. Wouldn't it be great if a minimum wage law by Minnesota forces the issue? I wouldn't want and wouldn't expect the Saints to fold, but they're the marquee team in the AA, make the league pay these players more. Get the ball rolling and hopefully the bad press baseball gets for dragging it's feet carries over to the affiliated leagues which are bankrolled by actual billionaires.
  18. The Twins high ceiling prospects are mostly all young and/or in the lower levels. It's rare to find guys in A ball at the top of lists. If Lewis, Rooker, Javier, Badoo, Kiriloff, Graterol or Enlow do in AA what they did in prior levels, they're going to fly up the rankings. The Twins high ceiling guys have already graduated, aside from Romero, the top guys in AA/AAA are just solid but unexciting prospects. If they were better they would have been called up last year. Does any club have a Buxton, Sano, Berrios and Kepler lurking in AAA year after year after year?
  19. I don't think anyone would disagree that it may be, just that this stuff is pretty silly and next to impossible to police. I can see where front offices and managers shouldn't be recruiting, but the players probably aren't taking a ton of HR classes to know what they can and can't say. I can't imagine the numerous legal and league violations that have been committed between a 1st baseman and the base-runner standing on first throughout the years.
  20. Could be. Peter Angelos has been pretty dead set on keeping Machado away from the Yankees. He doesn't always seem to be a very reasonable man, he probably threw a stink and the commissioner is trying to appease him.
  21. http://www.milb.com/images/664054/generic/180x270/664054.jpg Position: Pitcher Arm: Right and Left but he throws with his right one Bat: Pass DOB: 6/4/1994 6'2", 169lbs: Please send this man gift cards to Five Guys ASAP. Cody William Stashak is from Mays Landing NJ and attended St. John's University where he was drafted by the Twins in the 13th round of the 2015 draft. Upon being drafted Cody found himself pitching at E-town where he completed his first professional year. In ten starts Cody managed a 3.83 ERA over 44.2 innings while striking out 10.7/0 and only walking 2.2/9. His mature approach helped deliver him to full season ball in 2016. He found himself starting the year in Cedar Rapids where he pitched well over 105 innings earning a late season promotion to Ft. Myers. 2017 saw him continue at Ft. Myers where he managed 16 starts despite having three separate stints on the DL. His final DL stint was followed by a short rehab in the GCL, however upon his return to health the Twins sent him to Chattanooga where he finished the year in the bullpen. Cody was married October 8th of this past year to his HS sweetheart Taylor. I know this as their wedding announcement is the fifth returned search result when searching for Cody on Google, ahead of even his Fangraphs page! That must have been one popular wedding, well done young man. Here's Cody in extended spring training last summer:
  22. Well that last one is at least for sure true despite the fact that we're the ones ulitmately funding the entire industry.
  23. I agree, but I don't know that anyone intentionally sides with the owners, it's just that the owners just so happen to have interests that more align with the interests of the fans, particularly fans of mid-market teams. Fans: I want the Twins to be competitive ---> Affordable quality players Owners: Let's maximize profits ---> Affordable quality players
  24. You can give me Cody Stashak if no one is promoting him.
  25. Also Molitor showed a lot of faith in Hildenberger giving him quite a few late inning looks last year. They might not want to give Molitor two guys who he is going to be inclined to hide. Speaking of, I'm cheering for Kinley-Busenitz-Moya in that order, this bullpen is largely devoid of top end velocity. Also I'm cheering against Duffey (sorry Tyler, nothing personal) but I want it to fall upon Hughes to be the long man so as not to clog up the 5th rotation spot when it becomes a regular need and one of the young guys can have it.
