  1. Well I mean, it's only a regular season phenomenon.
  2. Also, Hrbek's peak was the 1980's which was a very depressed offensive era, his numbers don't hold up as well in today's game, but I mean he's top 20 in OPS in the 1980's which puts him ahead of HOF'ers in their prime like Robin Yount, Dave Winfield, Ricky Henderson, Tim Raines, Andre Dawson, Jim Rice and Paul Molitor. Obviously there are other factors, his position included, but Hrbek more than held his own with the bat during his era.
  3. That sounds like a sequel to Midnight Run. I'm guessing there will be an exciting car chase through Pennsylvania involving Andy McPhail and the Philly Phanatic and then some kind of double cross in Chicago where Theo Epstien kidnaps what appears to be Corbin tied up, gagged and with a bag over his head in the trunk of Falvey's car but when he gets to Wrigley field and removes the bag he finds out it's actually Logan Morrison. The final shot of the movie would have Bryce Harper greeting newly best friends Falvey and Corbin as they get off of a Greyhound outside of Target Field saying "Welcome home!"
  4. There were quite a few choices that went away from conventional rankings. While I might not agree with some of them, I like that it isn't conforming to the other rankings. I think these rankings tend to have a lot of group think input: 'I'm not really a fan of Thorpe, but everyone else has him in the top 10 so I'll be bold and only put him at 14.' Not this one, and I like it. Not Thorpe's ranking, just the process of the ranking.
  5. I too am still on the Thorpe bandwagon. Seems to me his velocity was higher prior to his TJ surgery, perhaps that starts creeping back up. I'd be interested in Carlos Santana; the Twins always like these "veteran leadership" types, it would be nice to have one that is actually an offensive asset. I could be talked into Robinson Cano probably too, but Seattle would need to eat considerable money there. With Mauer, Escobar and quite possibly Grossman gone, the Twins really need to work on getting multiple high OBP guys. Getting base runners was an issue last year even with those players.
  6. That's not good, though the Vikings weren't good most of those years either. It looks like they won at Soldier Field in 2015 and 2017, the two times the Vikings actually had good teams. In that span, the only time they lost at Chicago when the Vikings had a decent team was 2012 when they were still starting Ponder at QB. I'm going to be optimistic about the game if the defense is relatively healthy.
  7. Moderator note: This needs to stay civil, on topic and refrain from blatant accusations against the parties involved AND other posters.
  8. I get it, I'd still continue to look for market inefficiencies even if the current trends are still plausible. Even if the inefficiency isn't the most viable option now, it'd be nice to have in your back pocket for later.
  9. If the GMs make all their moves early the owners might see little reason to fund their week of living decadent at the Winter Meetings, which this year I believe is being held in Vegas. My kids do this too. They hold off on doing homework or cleaning their rooms knowing if they get me anxious enough I'll start offering bribes.
  10. Looks like KC is just in the early stages of their traditional 20 year rebuild.
  11. I think that's fairly easy in this case. If everyone else wants flexible players and you can't get them to come here, turn your own guys into flexible players or trade for guys who can do so but no one has tried yet.
  12. Start using the farm to acquire strong bats and a frontline starter. Use the oodles of availabke free agent money on three relievers who can miss bats in the AL and use the rest of the money on the he best bats possible. These guys should be well rounded, extra base power AND good on base skills, not the either or lineup we’ve seen the past several years. Versatility all around is a big plus. Don’t worry about the defense at this point. Get the bats and sort out positions/platoons later.
  13. That was nice that Molitor was there to be a part of it too.
  14. Seven of the ten are new to the organization in the past two years. There are plenty of prospects still around that the prior regime acquired but it's starting to look like those guys are getting squeezed down a bit.
  15. If Joe doesn't get in on the traditional ballot, he'll get in with the veterans committee, or whatever it's called now. At some point he's going to have Paul Molitor, Dave Winfield, Jack Morris, Bert Blyleven and/or his peers stumping and voting for him. But yeah, at the moment both Mauer and Santana look to have been Oliva'd. I am surprised Santana got so few votes. Had he not had the one comeback attempt in 2012 and instead his career abruptly ended at the age of 31 due to injury, would he have gotten the same consideration that Koufax and Puckett did? Or even more drastically, what if his season and career had ended when his shoulder was effectively ruined after throwing 134 pitches to get the Mets the franchise's only no hitter? Did those ten or so starts he made after his arm was shot cost him? He had a 2.34 ERA and was striking out a batter an inning at the time.
  16. I don't know where the mix up in context is, as long as there a mix up. No one should need to wait for Sano and Buxton. This is baseball, not the NBA, don't let two players dictate your entire philosophy about building a team. If it helps, they should proceed with this off season as if they've never heard of those two players. Just put a really good team together. If those two come back too life, then you have a great team.
  17. Hmm, there seemed to be a lot of less than optimal looks in that sequence. I'd think a guy who so desperately wants to win more than any other human being on earth might have passed to someone who didn't have to take an off balanced fade away with three hands in his face.
  18. I like the Phil Miller contribution, though not the implication that Guardado and Kintzler are how the Twins should model their closer search. Can a closer get away with low velocity, low strikeouts and lots of base runners? Sure, but why seek outliers who need significant help from the defenses when you don’t need to? Don’t get cute, get a guy who’s going to miss a lot of bats. Get three of them in fact. There are so many good relievers this off season, they might not get a better chance to fix the pen, spend the millions.
  19. Ok, now let’s retire Thibs as well. He’s not going to be getting the credit for this after first hiding the problem, then ignoring the problem followed by him obstructing the solution is he?
  20. Here’s hoping Butler doesn’t think Simmons and Embid care as much about winning as he does too.
  21. Tidbits. That word makes me giggle.
  22. I'm still hopeful for both, but isn't Buxton's floor considerably lower than solid regular? Wouldn't his floor be what we've seen most of the past four seasons? I wouldn't say that's a solid regular.
  23. I laughed because I hate the Packers, but I wouldn't have had any problem with people defending Matthews had those same people also pointed out that Kendricks got the same ridiculous and costly penalty a quarter earlier. There was a lot of 'The Packers got jobbed!' whining whilst excluding the fact that the Vikings did as well. Also, I think it should be noted that either the officials are pretty much looking the other way on this rule now or defenders have already learned to adapt. I think it's some of both, but the Vikings had 10 sacks last week and I don't believe any penalties regarding tackling the QB and all the sacks looked like they complied with the new rule to me. Which still is lame, but in all actuality looks to have been easily overcome.
  24. I think Buxton can succeed, I just don't want the team to rely on his success for their success. But that's not Buxton exclusive. I don't want them to rely on Sano, or Berrios, or Rosario, or Gibson or Royce Lewis either. If a season falls apart because of a player or two not living up to expectations, then you didn't put together a good enough team.
  25. I’d take any of those guys on a short term deal, but none of them are long term answers. SS and 2B are no longer league-wide offensive black holes. If the Twins don’t have the long term answer in house (fingers crossed that they do) then they need to pry one away from another team. Outside of Machado, these free agents are either way too poor with the bat or way too poor with the glove to commit a leash or money for them to start beyond 2019.
