  1. Harmon was a unique case, he sure did move around a lot, so did Carew. I don't know that guys changed positions too greatly back in the day, but I'd say the advent of the DH caused a lot less need for flexibility. With the DH the team didn't need to scramble to plug someone into RF when Oliva's knee was acting up for a month because he had already been penciled into the DH role from the get go. So instead the more flexible player became the "utility" player and "utility" was just a fancy term for bench player. No one wants to be a bench player, everyone wants to be starting. But I'd guess it's not a turn off to many players anymore, they'd have to see how playing multiple positions will increase their value in today's game. My guess is the only thing stopping most players from playing multiple positions (aside from physical limitations of course) is a manger who hasn't asked them to do so.
  2. I'd take Tim Beckham as the utility/injury replacement guy. But I'm also the resident "screw defense" guy and I don't think he's particularly good at any position, so I'd guess others are turned off by his glove.
  3. I just said in a different thread that I'd be interested in McCutchen or take on another Mariners salary dump to get Mitch Hanigar. With Seattle rebuilding I assume they may further shop newly acquired Carlos Santana? Those two could sure swing the OBP scale quite a bit.
  4. The team still has Rosario, Kepler, Polanco and Cave batting lefty and Rosario and Polanco probably will bat toward the top of the lineup, Kepler and Cave may do so as well, depending on how the roster is constructed. I actually prefer a righty-heavy lineup when possible at Target Field, so instead of monkeying with various 1B free agents, I'd rather the team find a good RH corner outfield bat that can allow Kepler to be the LH platoon role; outfield and 1B. I'd be interested in one of the Mariners salary dump packages to get Mitch Hanigar, and Andrew McCutchen works too.
  5. Interesting, yeah I would have thought he lead the league nearly every year. Can I do another one that I came across today? While noticing that Milwaukee traded Mitch Hanigar mid season in 2014, I was wondering if the Twins would have had anyone that may have interested the Brewers at that time. Without looking, does anyone know who lead the Twins in OPS* in 2014? And it wasn't even close, runner up was .52 points behind. *With more than 8 plate appearances
  6. If Seattle is selling, what does it take to get Jean Segura? He's not cheap, is he half salary dump?
  7. The presentation suggest gondolas to downtown Oakland and parking. Unless they plan on flooding a street or two, I assume they're talking about the elevated kind. Either way, that would be pretty cool. I wonder what kind of high capacity gondola could be created? It would have to seat more than what I picture in my mind.
  8. Yeah sorry, I was looking at the northwest end of the pier, I didn't see the typical new mixed use stuff you normally see in up-and-coming neighborhoods anywhere near that location, then I realized the pier was nearly a mile long. I see the south eastern end is right at the edge of where the turnover is happening.
  9. I actually thought Cano may be able to age better than most since he has very good on base skills, but Albert Pujols is a good example to the contrary. His lessened bat skills wouldn't be nearly as noticeable if he was still able to work a count to draw a walk. That seems pretty uncommon, but I guess not unheard of.
  10. That sure is a mish-mash of teams, some look like contenders he may waive the clause for but would like leverage, others are definitely not contenders so he really just must not want to go places like Detroit or Baltimore. I could see the Twins either way as his agent may have said they were one of the 15 most likely teams to make a deal. Notably, Milwaukee is not on the list and they are a contender, so he must be very open to going there as one poster previously speculated. No Chicago, Florida or Texas teams either.
  11. Well whatever it was before, I agree with it now. I think this year's free agent relief class is a goldmine.
  12. Well that 9 years part should be a red flag, most ball players don't make it that long. I think Cano can still be useful, but not at that price tag and prospect cost, you could get his production for much less. Jeff McNeil was their 2B down the stretch last year, he hit as well as Cano did and he's ten years younger.
  13. My problem is that it seems the receiving team is taking on bad money and selling assets almost entirely to get Diaz. He's a stud, I'd love to have him, but instead of paying Cano that money you could probably sign Zach Britton and Jeurys Familia with enough left over for a Bud Norris. In other years, this might seem like a reasonable deal to fix your bullpen, but this year is unlike any I've seen in terms for free agent relievers.
  14. They could develop them themselves, like most of the rest of the league does.
  15. Well if the Mets are interested Diaz and Cano from the Mariners, Lewis and Kirilloff probably aren't what they're looking for in exchange for Syndergaard anyway.
  16. I don't understand what the Mets are trying to accomplish here. Do they just want Diaz? Just re-sign Familia. Are they trying to rebuild or compete? If it's compete, I'd think Syndergaard + Familia or a similar free agent is better than Cano + Diaz both on the field and on the books.
  17. I didn't much care for Pomeranz when the Red Sox traded for him as I don't trust pitchers suddenly becoming good in San Diego, but I don't mind a flier on him now. Though it would have to be a real minimal deal, I don't like that 2 MPH drop in velocity last year, that doesn't look good. Matt Harvey is still throwing hard, I wonder why he's not missing more bats though. I guess that's kind of like Eovaldi. Nate Karns has had some success, strikes guys out and not long ago was in the Twins new favorite convenience store, Tampa. But I'm pretty turned off by Thoratic Outlet surgery so I don't know that I'd buy a comeback for him. Martin Perez is still pretty young and is coming from Texas, Lavine's old stomping ground. I don't like his profile as it is, but if someone could convince him to stop using that stupid sinker so often maybe he'd finally figure it out like Kyle Gibson did. To be clear, I was just playing the low-risk, unexciting Eovaldi game as described by Tom.
  18. Both solid guesses, dare I say educated guesses even, and I don't see any reason why both can't be accurate.
  19. I think the need for the extension was due to a really odd original contract which is now not allowed. He could like opt out of arbitration early last year but didn't but then could opt back in again this year. It sounded really bizarre.
  20. This thing looks pretty cool: https://www.mlb.com/athletics/oakland-ballpark The way MLBTR sees it, they may not be asking for public funding to build the stadium, only city leader assistance in acquiring the site. I'd guess they'd ask for tax incentives and infrastructure support as well. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ If so, good for them and good for the city of Oakland. I know if this pans out my first thoughts would be based on jealousy in that my team's owner was able to gouge the tax payers for his stadium, but I'd be happy if the people of Oakland get a better deal. Frankly, that particular community has had more economic struggles than ours, they could use a break.
  21. Could be. Though that leeriness might be overlooked considering DL stints for Rule V draftees can be advantageous. The word chronic is rarely good though, I mostly just remember him from the draft that year. Also, my choice for lost Twins is still my dark horse Cody Stashak. Multi inning reliever with good strikeout and walk numbers.
  22. It sounds like the prize for taking him and some of his salary off of Seattle's hands is Edwin Diaz. That change anyone's mind? I wouldn't eat the whole salary, but I'd be interested. As long as Cano is still able to get on base he won't be a complete bust, and he looks like he's still got quite a bit of that ability left. And Minnesota is always a sucker for those milestone chases, he'll most likely be cashing in his 3,000 hit sometime in the next four years. But he's got a 10-5 rights so he gets to say no if he doesn't want to come here.
  23. Yeah, I most likely don't want anyone, but Richie Martin looks like he might actually be able to push for the starting SS gig if the Twins would prefer to move Polanco to 2B. Looks like he was pretty good at getting on base last year which to me is always one of the most translatable skills. He'll probably be scooped up though right away and I'm not sure I care to use a roster spot on anyone else.
  24. I'm really not digging that drop to 7.57 K/9. I think he's going to be floating in Carl Pavano territory upon a move to the AL. His increased walk rate is also alarming. Sadly I think he's nearing the end of the road despite what his ERA says. He's only 29-years-old but he's been in the majors since he was 19. I think I'd rather see Romero.
  25. Torii's UZR/150 went from a brutal -10.3 influenced mostly by a -7.8 range component at Comerica Park in 2015 to a 4.1 UZR/150 with a positive range component at Target Field in 2016. His BBR defensive WAR went from -2.3 to -1.4 and his Fangraphs defensive WAR went from -14.5 to -3.3. His DRS went from -17 to -8 and his OOZ increased from 50 to 62. If from your view he was still awful in right field, I think that any measure you use shows that being awful at that position is not terribly penalized at Target Field.
