  1. I want them to change their thinking on all the positions, DH included. I want them to put the best possible offense together and let the positional aspect be malleable. I'd find it preferable to keep DH and possibly 1B fluid so as to help cover up any defensive deficiencies, but if they actually find one of those best possible bats and he happens to only fill the DH spot, so be it. But it better be a dang good bat. I don't want some league average guy there which forces the team to go with a below league average guy at another position.
  2. So far nearly every one of the White Sox young prized prospects they received for tanking look like busts. They may get some big money free agents, but I've rarely been more confident that another team has absolutely dropped the ball on their assessment of young players.
  3. I'll believe a move off of SS when I see it. If you're not elite defensively at SS, the prospect writers always think you have to move positions. I'm not singling Law out on this one.
  4. I mean, choosing an affordable housing project over a publicly funded baseball stadium? Yeah, Portland isn't ready for the soulless endeavor of being a MLB/NFL market. Aren't they aware that affordable housing is supposed to be razed to build a fancy new ballpark? Kudos Portland.
  5. I hope everyone who stopped reading at Matt Wieters and came down to the comments to criticize can take a moment to re-evaluate the excellent exercise that was performed here.
  6. Boras had been saving that joke for awhile, and it was a poor one. Not in bad taste, just really, really dumb. While the Twins may not have made smart moves last winter, they did make a lot of moves. I'd bet there were few teams that gave out more MLB contracts to free agents than the Twins last year. If anything, Boras is just stung that the Twins waited until after many of those guys were willing to take a discount. If that's the case, blame the other teams, at least the Twins did sign these vets instead of rolling with youngsters on league minimum contracts like 70% of the other clubs did. Also, we can't overcome the fact that Minnesota is geographically unattractive to a majority of players. Boras needs to stop pretending that he wants the Twins to spend more on free agents. What he really wants is the Twins to BID more on free agents to drive up their prices for the more attractive markets. That said, if Lewis and Kirilloff are studs and leave us for the big lights of NY and the beaches of LA, that's on them, not Boras. They choose their agent because they want what the agent can provide; the agent doesn't pick the players.
  7. Hmm, yeah that sounds familiar. Seems like that should fall in line with the other awards. Promoting that one to match the Cy Young award could help ease the MVP debates. So in light of that, I'm just fine with the MVP typically going to who most voters see as the most valuable, that being the player who's teams successful season rode most heavily on his shoulders.
  8. The 1950 A's? That was the year both their owner AND manager promptly died. Surely it was due to the shock of the attendance collapse. Send a prayer to Derek Jeter and Don Mattingly folks.
  9. I don't mind if a pitcher wins the MVP, but I still think that it clearly goes to Yelich this year. If baseball wants to end this contentious debate they'd add a third award for best hitter. The MVP award in neither it's name nor it's description says that it is for the best player: “The rules of the voting remain the same as they were written on the first ballot in 1931: (1) actual value of a player to his team, that is, strength of offense and defense; (2) number of games played; (3) general character, disposition, loyalty and effort; (4) former winners are eligible; and (5) members of the committee may vote for more than one member of a team.” You'll never be able to get enough people to agree that a player on an noncompetitive team could possibly have enough value to earn the honor. Just make another award without all the subjectivity that's equal to the Cy Young award, but for hitters.
  10. I thought it was the opposite. I thought he wanted out of KC and wasn't thrilled when it turned out he was going to Milwaukee and even made a fuss about them not giving him his old uniform number. But I could be wrong about all of that, my mental archives aren't maintained like they used to be when I could recall every baseball anecdote and list in order every member of the 3000 hit club.
  11. It seems to me that the Rockies are one of those teams where you constantly have to ask "What the hell were they thinking?" I don't understand half of their moves, but their affinity for left handed outfielders as unrivaled.
  12. Only if you look at it wrong. No one says no to having both Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter in the system.
  13. It would be nice if we had a beat writer who could find out if Greinke would waive is no-trade clause to come to Minnesota. I'd like him, but I have my doubts he likes Minnesota. But this team doesn't have any beat writers any more so I guess we'll have to rely on other markets to get our intel second hand.
  14. If Kirilloff goes from #5 to #2 this year then the only logical correlation is that next year Javier will go from #4 to #1.
  15. I'd be interested in Gray. He throws hard and doesn't issue too many free passes, I think those are two strong indicators that a pitcher who hasn't lived up to his potential can eventually reach it. I've always been interested in Nathan Eovaldi for that reason as well. Congrats to their recent success, but the Rockies also seem to be one of those late-to-the-analytics-party teams, which makes me much more interested in their players. They might not be doing the things that best maximize some of their players' talents that other teams might be willing to try.
  16. Whether we want Dozier or not, I kind of feel he'd like to move on. I'm probably on an island on this one, but I'm not a big Gallo fan. I think he goes from Khris Davis to Chris Davis before too long.
  17. I'd prefer to improve the offense by other means than Cruz, but if they did sign him, they'd be hard pressed to also find a 1B only player as well. If they also want to improve offensive production, I don't think the Twins have the roster room for two defensively stuck players. Which is OK by me, I don't want some league average hitter plugging up the 1B spot and from the looks of it, whether they go internal or external to get at bats for the 1B spot this year, league average is probably about the most optimistic outcome they can hope for..
  18. I'd be game for this. I'm going to hedge my optimism until we see these big named international free agents willingly come to the mid-market Midwest teams though. It's not terribly fair but so far it seems like destination trumps all else for these players. Though the Twins did snag Park and Nishioka, so maybe it's not a lost cause. And no, I do not list those two sarcastically. Neither should be representative of other foreign players and neither should cause hesitation to dip back into the market again assuming due diligence is done.
  19. I don't think it's just this country. Seems to me professional soccer players get into all kinds of trouble as well and their behavior is overlooked if not sometimes celebrated.
  20. I like it, but I wouldn't trade for another reliever. There are two dozen quality arms available on the free agent market. If we're spending money might as well save the prospects. I'd shoot for higher than Blevins as well. Also, I asked this in a prior thread but I don't know if anyone has had an answer. Are we as a baseball society over the fear of slider over-use? Conventional wisdom used to be that pitchers who throw it too often are bound for surgery. Corbin threw it over 40% of the time last year, which sounds obscene for a starter. Don't get me wrong, the slider is my favorite pitch so if sports science has debunked the reasons to fear the slider I'm all aboard the Corbin train.
  21. I’m sure it will be a coincidence that the speech about morality given from the high horse will happen after they find a trade partner. Those things take awhile to proofread after all.
  22. It looked broke to me. How does anything ever improve without experimentation and those brave enough to try new things?
  23. Great, so all the Twins have to do is get five really good starters who can pitch 6-9 innings every start? Hasn’t that basically been the goal forever with the team always failing to meet that standard? If you read the proposal you’ll notice that Berros’ and Gibson’s innings weren’t impacted.
  24. I’m for being the first to try anything to give the Twins a competitive advantage. Of course the downside to this plan is that it would significantly hamper Odorizzi’s shot at joining the 300 win club.
  25. I’d guess he still gets paid, but sadly teams tend to make excuses for immoral behavior if the player can help them win on the field. In Machado’s case all of his issues seem to directly cause concern for productivity on the field. Though I’d still bet against it, I could see it still fairly possible that all the teams shy away from a long term deal for him.
